Forgiveness And Other VirtuesIt was Monday, December 12, 2011, and President Bill Bloomfieldbanged the gavel on the bell lest we be too preoccupied to hear RickFarrell’s holiday gift suggestions (he recommends the gifts that mat-ter, like forgiveness)…..John Hugunin’s guest was his bride of 45years, Carole….When Sandpiper Holiday Basket volunteers wereasked to stand and be recognized, it seemed like half the room roseup…..Santa Bill thanked his elves….Tom Jeffry urged us to do asMike Matthews just did, namely go online to sign up for the January10 District Breakfast, featuring the General Manager of the RIFoundation….Kent Caldwell was honored for his 30 years in theclub—President Bill called him an Unsung Hero, but PatrickDonahue, noting Kent’s musical talent, suggested he’s a SungHero…..Still more members stood up to be recognized for assistingat the Joslyn Center’s Senior Citizen Holiday Luncheon (whichWendell Harter was finally old enough to attend).

Happy DollarsEd Kushins is simply grateful to be a Rotarian….Russ Rothner isgrateful for the experience of delivering Sandpiper HolidayBaskets….Alex Yoffe is grateful for Rotary’s help with the SandpiperHoliday Baskets, given that his wife Kristen was in charge of theproject….John Osten’s son has not only passed the Bar but, betteryet, now has a job with a law firm….James Caprell is grateful to theclub for its member support of the Casa Hogar CBV gift drive for thechildren, spearheaded by James, Steve Murillo, Vinny Fazzino, andRandy Meadors (all of whom were brilliantly caricatured by Jameson a poster which you can view on our club’s Facebook page, thanksto Facebook impresario Donn Ennis)….Patrick Donahue defied 17to 1 odds and walked off with $333 for finding the white marble.

Rick DavisWhat a coup President Bill pulled off for us this date, bringing usRick Davis, campaign manager in both 2000 and 2008 for JohnMcCain. President Bill was McCain’s national volunteer coordina-tor in 2008, so, as Davis said, he “owed” Bill, and Bill collected thatdebt on our behalf, bringing this high profile political genius (think

Lee Atwater, Karl Rove, James Carville, David Axelrod) to our club.Remarkably self-effacing for a man who lives in such an aggressiveworld, Davis shared multiple, candid campaign stories with us. Amongthese: at its low point the 2008 McCain campaign was broke andlaying off staff. Bill Bloomfield showed up and said he’d manage thevolunteer effort at a time when volunteers were few in number. Butsoon there were a multitude of volunteers, whom Davis says were farmore effective thanks to Bill’s management.

Davis is first a businessman and second a politician, currently devot-ing his energies to his investment company, Pegasus. He chaired theYoung Republicans while a student at Alabama, became Bob Dole’s1996 deputy campaign manager, and then famously joined McCain. He lives in Alexandria, Virginia, with his wife, who is a veterinarian.

Davis handicapped today’s Republican presidential primary race, sug-gesting it’s Newt Gingrich’s to lose, but also suggesting that at leastthe Old Newt is quite capable of turning this into a loss. He’d like tosee more energy in the Romney campaign, but believes Romney re-mains quite viable. His hope for a GOP win is the widespread Repub-lican unified opposition to President Obama. He is alarmed by theprospect of a Gingrich-Obama campaign in which both candidatesstart out with negative approval ratings, a perhaps unprecedented situ-ation. Such a campaign would be highly entertaining, he believes, buthe’d like to see leadership that transcends politics and believes a thirdparty centrist candidate, despite the historical odds, could get in themix.

Davis also shared some McCain campaign stories. He believes thatMcCain, though he lost the nomination race in 2000, built up so muchgoodwill through his positive campaign style that it carried right into2008. He also took some credit (blame?) for the Sarah Palin selec-tion, putting us back in context, surmising that we’ll never know ifthe Palin candidacy could have succeeded because the September 16,2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers turned the entire election upsidedown in unpredictable ways.

Third Party Candidate: Rick Davis commented that this may be theyear for a viable third party candidate. Right on cue, President-ElectTom Jeffry posted another one of his campaign slides for PresidentBill, promoting him this time as the standard-bearer of the Tea &Crumpet Party. While President Bill blocked the screen and turnedoff the projector, all agreed that America could do worse.
