Blood Donation & Blood Challenge 2015-2016
Be a Gift to the World: Give Blood Rotary Global Blood Donation Initiative
Worldwide, there are about 100 million blood donations a year. Although high income countries account for only about 20% of the global population, they use half the donations, most of which go to patients over 65 years of age. The availability of safe blood has ensured, especially for older individuals, dramatic advances in surgery, cancer chemotherapy, and organ transplantation, all of which depend on transfusion. The picture is profoundly different in lower income countries where up to 65% of transfusions go to children under 5 years old. These youngsters are desperately dependent on blood when profound and life threatening anemia complicates malaria infection. Each year, nearly 800,000 youngsters die of the infection. It has been estimated that 100,000 could be rescued if blood was available. Management of the complications of pregnancy is another compelling indication for transfusion in developing countries where the lifetime risk for a woman dying of maternal causes can be 1 in 20. There are more than 500,000 maternal deaths worldwide and a third are due to hemorrhage. In 70% of these fatalities, lack of blood is responsible.
Quietly …We’ve helped save millions of lives!
Rotary is one of the greatest sources of voluntary blood donation in the world through the efforts of Rotary Clubs and the blood centers in their community. We have been doing this since blood was discovered in Rotarian veins.Thousands of local blood drives, throngs of Rotarian donors, dozens of major projects, Rotary blood centers, donor coaches, aepheresis technology…millions of lives saved and supported - a major Rotary story, largely untold.
As our actions are diffuse, working with blood centers and hospitals in thousands of communities, and do not involve money, they are largely uncounted and unrecognized, even within Rotary.
Let us now join, expand our life-saving gifts, our visibility, and tell Rotary’s story…
Supporting The Rotary Foundation focus upon
Disease Prevention and Treatment,
Maternal and Child Health.
