Rotary Four Way Test

"Of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the Truth? 2. Is it Fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?"

over 1.2 million neighbours, friends and community leaders who come together to create positive, lasting change in our communities and around the world. Over 33,000 clubs in more than 200 countries conduct projects to address today’s challenges, including illiteracy, lack of clean water, disease, hunger, poverty and environmental concerns. Recognising the growing importance organisations place on partnering and corporate social responsibility, our Rotary Club has created an organisational membership initiative. Membership in Rotary offers an excellent vehicle for leadership development as well as networking and volunteering opportunities with a diverse group of select individuals representing a cross-section of our business and community organisations. The Rotary Club provides a medium to learn about community needs in a variety of areas and participate in volunteer projects that truly impact our community. Malcolm then explained that at the 2013 Council on Legislation, the concept of Satellite Clubs (Satellites) was approved. This means that Rotary Clubs are able to sponsor Satellites. There is no maximum number of Satellites per district. Ultimately, the aim is for each Satellite to move on to become a Rotary Club in its own right. This concept is different and separate to the Satellites Pilot Project which was finalised in 2014. Satellite Clubs are an extension of their Sponsor Club and offer an alternative meeting day / time and / or place to the Sponsor Club. The purpose behind forming a Satellite can be any of the following:

• A means of building a club in a new community with the aim of chartering that club in the future;

• Provide the opportunity for Rotary to be available in smaller rural and remote communities;

• Opportunity for alternative meeting times or locations for one club within the one week;

• Introduce alternative community demographics to Rotary through a different club structure – such as younger members, youth program alumni, language-based group; work constrained group (e.g. night shift employees).

• Introduce alternative meeting model availability – i.e. Weekends, Supper, No charge meetings, for example.

• To develop and refine an e-based club, but with a smaller base of members initially.

• An e-Club can have a Satellite as well as a standard club can have an e-club Satellite.

For more information on Satellite Clubs you can visit here

The Rotary Foundation is funded in two different ways: The Annual Fund and the Endowment Fund. The primary source of unrestricted support for the programs of The Rotary Foundation, the Annual Fund supports programs in more than 200 geographical regions. From digging clean water wells for villages in Africa to reaching basic literacy skills to children in Latin America, during any given moment in a day, thousands of Rotarians volunteer their time and expertise to ensure that all contributions given to the Annual Fund are spent wisely on quality Rotary projects. In the 2012-13 Rotary year, US$115 million was donated to The Rotary Foundation’s Annual Fund (Making History in Rotarian generosity). The Annual Fund is comprised of donations from Rotarians, friends of Rotary, corporations, workplace giving vehicles and can be matched by corporate matching gifts to leverage your donation. Joke of the Week One day God calls down to Noah and says, “Noah, I want you to make me a new ark”. Noah replies, “No problem, God, you’re the boss”. God says, “Ah, but there’s a catch this time, Noah. I want not just a couple of decks – I want 20 decks, one on top of the other.” “Twenty decks!” screams Noah. “Well, okay, whatever you say. Should I fill it with animals just like the last time?” “Sort of,” says God. “But this time I want you to fill it up with fish.” “Fish?” queries Noah. “Yep, fish . . . well, to make it more specific, I want carp. Wall to wall, floor to ceiling carp.” Noah looks to the skies and says, “Okay God, let me get this right. You want a new ark.” “Check.” “With 20 decks, one on top of the other and you want it full of carp?” “Check.” “Why?” asks the perplexed Noah, who was slowly but surely getting to the end of his tether. “Dunno,” says God, “I just fancied a multistory carp ark.”

Rotary International News

WA Rotary veteran receives PolioPlus Pioneer Award By Sam Ausburn

At the recent Rotary International District 9455 Conference, past RI director and past trustee of The Rotary Foundation, Dr Ken Collins, was presented with the PolioPlus Pioneer Award. Dr Collins is one of just 16 Rotarians recognised worldwide in 2018-19. The award honours Rotarians who gave extraordinary service to the Polio Eradication Program between July 1985 and November 1992. Ken’s dedication to polio eradication is largely due to his first-hand experiences with the disease, and the desire to save others from living through the horror. He started school in February 1942, just after the second major polio epidemic in Australia in 1941, which had killed some 200 Australian children and paralysed more than 2000. Everyone lived in fear of this frightening disease, which struck without warning. In mid-August 1945, during the next epidemic, he watched his older brother being placed in an ambulance, having been diagnosed with polio. He was placed in isolation and Ken did not see him for two months, during which time he feared never seeing his brother again. In 1949, while playing cricket, Ken discovered he had lost the use of the muscles in his right shoulder. He too had become a victim of polio. In 1985, Ken attended the International Assembly as an incoming district governor. Dr Albert Sabin came onto the stage and stated that, although vaccines had been available for 30 years, there were still 500,000 cases of polio occurring each year in 150 countries. Albert begged the incoming district governors to help him achieve his dream of a polio-free world. Ken’s mind immediately flashed back to the fear experienced in the 40s, and he vowed to do all he could to help eradicate polio. Ken spearheaded the fundraising campaign in his district between 1985 and 1988. Following this, he participated in PolioPlus surveys to the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia, represented Rotary International at a World Health Organisation (WHO) meeting in Indonesia, and initiated a matching grant project to provide equipment for a viral laboratory in Thailand. However, his service did not end there. For 34 consecutive years, Ken has worked at club, district, national and international levels, including representing The Rotary Foundation at WHO meetings in five countries and attending National Immunisation Days in Myanmar and India. In 2005, Ken obtained a contribution of $2.5 million from the Australian Government. But his greatest contribution occurred in July 2011, when he and Chris Maher from WHO met with two advisors of then Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd, seeking a donation of $50 million. At the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Perth three months later, then Prime Minister Julia Gillard confirmed that the government would contribute $50 million to the End Polio Now program. Ken truly has been a dedicated pioneer worthy of this honour, and we congratulate him on both his ongoing service and his award.
