The project cost is Rs 1 crore of which Rs 55 lakhs has been funded and disbursed in full by the Club and the balance Rs 45 lakhs is funded by Somiaya Trust for setting up state-of- the-art Blood Bank. Thus with 50% cost of capex being taken care of, the hospital will subsidize blood and its derivatives to the needy at a subsidy of approx. 75%. Effectively, blood will be sold at Rs.250/- as against the normal cost of Rs.1,000/- and platelets will be sold at Rs.450/- against normal cost of Rs.2,000/-. To sustain the running cost, blood bank will sell at full price all blood to the high end cancer hospital ie Asian Institute of Oncology, which has also been started in the same complex, which is a paid for service hospital. The general hospital which the blood bank caters to

has 500 beds as well as medical college attached, which ensures supply of blood as well as deployment at the same time. The FDA clearance is expected by February 2014 after which the project will be inaugurated.

Many thanks to Mr Guru Kher for their magnanimous donations of Rs 25 lakhs and Rs 10 lakhs, respectively, and also from Club members towards purchasing equipments for the blood bank at Somaiya Hospital.
