PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2016-2017

Dear Members WoW! What a busy year, dominated in the end by the Cyclone Debbie major flood and the ensuing recovery effort. I suppose it had to happen some time.....the over-topping of the Lismore CBD 1:10 Flood Levee. What a disaster, what a mess. Our city was like a war zone with piles of rubbish metres high all through the city flood plain. Just as remarkable was the way our Rotary District (and distant Rotary clubs) came to the rescue. Our District Governor called for donations for our Emergency Relief Fund and received very strong support. Our club was asked to take a leading role in Lismore and we put considerable effort into helping the GROW Centre, the Winsome Soup Kitchen, the PCYC, the Girl Guides and Breast Cancer Support Group. It was very pleasing to be able to assist those groups get back on their feet. A big thank you to all members who worked long hours on these recovery efforts and to District for the funds. The Rotary year was not all about the flood. I was very happy to preside over a balanced program involving all levels of Rotary service. We continued our proud record of involvement in Club, Community, International, Vocational and Youth projects. Our Board Directors have put forward and implemented comprehensive programs in all these areas of service and I thank you all. We were also involved with District initiatives including Organ Donations, Fred Hollows Foundation, Outback Drought Relief/Raising the Spirits around Charleville, and the Purple Pinkie Polio programs. The club would grind to a halt without the tremendous effort put in week by week by our Secretary, Graeme and Treasurer Ron. These two office bearers have kept us all in line and on track. This year was not their first. Indeed they have both been at it for many years, with 2016-17 being something of a show-piece. Thank you both for an outstanding effort in a busy year. From the club satisfaction surveys completed by members, it seems that we must be doing something right. However, we have not been able to attract any new members and that is a worry. We tried a few initiatives throughout the year such as varying our meeting format and schedule but, in the end, members preferred our reasonably traditional approach, varied with social outings in months with a 5th Thursday. The venues for these social nights have morphed to the various social enterprises that we support such as the GROW Cafe, TAFE restaurant, Winsome Soup Kitchen and the Wilson Park Special School. In this way we have been able to enjoy ourselves while doing some good in our community. Thank you also to our wives/partners/families for the support that you give, adding much to the enjoyment and achievements of our club. In closing I would like wish our incoming President Barry Mason and his Board the very best for the coming year.

CLUB SERVICE REPORT 2016-2017

It has been a pleasure to work with the very experienced board this year under the command of President Rod Fayle. This year has had its challenges and some major decisions about club direction have and are yet to be taken. Membership. Again our numbers have dwindled, with the sad loss of 2 of our long term and much loved members, Ray Chilton and Ken Larsson. Some other members have chosen to retire from Rotary and our Club, for various reasons. We wish them well, and we will miss them also. Membership is down to 26 active, 10 honorary Bulletin Barry has been the main man here, with others, including Gary, Norm and Graeme standing in at times. The Bulletin is still the most favoured form of communication in the club, and under Barry's tutelage has thrived. Sergeants Bob Barnes, John Remynse, John Egglestone and myself have kept the coffers full and the stories flowing. All in a good cause. Welfare Eric Hocking has done a sterling job under this portfolio, reporting with feeling about members and partners various ups and downs. It is good to know that fellow club members are aware of each other's circumstances and can respond accordingly. Historian, Public Relations and Quartermaster Stalwart of the club Norm has continued his role of Club Historian with his usual enthusiasm and we thank him for keeping the records in such neat trim (as Commander Rod would say). Programme and Activities This year the Club experienced the usual mix of guest speakers, vocational visits and our new initiative of occasional dinners at venues that we support, such as the well established dinner at Wilson Park School, GROW and once the venues have recovered, The Winsome and PCYC. These visits have a double bonus of us having a change of venue and meal and being able to donate our dinner fees to that particular charity. A visit to Richmond River Historical Society followed by dinner at the Civic Hotel was a winner, and dinner at Tattersalls Hotel was well received. ANZAC Day was commemorated with dignity and is a highlight of the Club Calendar. Thanks to those organisers and speakers. Thanks also to all the various setter-uppers (especially you Elio), welcomers, introducers and thankers, International Whats-it organisers and the other myriad of helpers that this portfolio covers. Special thanks go to Paul and his Staff for the excellent meals and service we receive at the East Lismore Bowling Club. Doc Dorahy Club Service Director 2016-2017

COMMUNITY SERVICE REPORT 2016-2017

No Opera at the Channon for 2016, and no more ever. We will be supporting a new concept at the University this year featuring the Lismore Symphony Orchestra and some Opera singers. We undertook the 4WD Show in early July with help from our wives and Lismore Rotary. Profits were down as we only worked out of the old Rotary BBQ. A lot of work for some, Merv and Andrea doing a great job as always. Also there seemed a lot of food outlets competing for the same dollar. Bunning’s BBQs have been held throughout the year adding to the Club’s funds. The Classic Car club, Daryl Chapman Fun Run, and days at the University were held, together with the Pie Cart feeding people for the Macadamia Society, and the Air Show. Mostly organised by Elio. Thanks to Elio and John, and all those that did their bit on these days. “Driving Miss Daisy” at St. Vinnies has continued for some members each week again this year. Those members that drive the buggy continue to receive thanks from their passengers. The seat at the Hospital was commissioned by a visit to the new Hospital where we were thanked by the administrator Lyn Weir. We were then shown through the new section. GROW at South Lismore received some matching funds to provide a coffee machine, a coffee grinder, coffee, installation of the machines and then we gathered together at their premises for a pasta night, where the funds were given to the organisation. The Flood!!! GROW, The Soup Kitchen, PCYC, Girl Guides, have received funding from the District appeal that has been administered by our club. Hughie Baker and his helpers ripped up the floor at GROW and replaced it with a new one. A good job, well done by the happy band of Rotarians. Thank you to all the members that have attended our schemes throughout the year and special thanks to those wives and friends that have pitched in at the schemes. THANK YOU!! Recycled Rod has had a good year winning the District Award for Community Service, which was presented at the conference. About time as over the years, we have always spent a lot of time working in the community. Been good Rod and I look forward to Barry. Ian Mulligan Community Services Director 2016-2017

YOUTH SERVICE REPORT 2016 – 2017

The participation of students from our local high schools has been disappointing this year.

It is hoped that 2017-18 will see more students, or young people, taking advantage of the

many excellent Youth Programs to which Lismore West has supported student’s participation

in previous years.

The 2016 Rotary Club of Lismore West’s Junior Citizenship Prize for a Year 10 Student

at Lismore High Campus of the Rivers Secondary College was awarded to Angus

Gallagher and Abbey Bailey at the 2016 Lismore High Campus Year 12 Presentation Awards

Assembly on Monday, 12 December. Each student received a Commendation and a cheque

for $100.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). Our Club sponsored Lachlan Baynham, a

trainee Engineer with the Lismore City Council, to the RYLA camp which was held at

Tyalgum Ridge Retreat over the last week of January, 2017. Our Club covered the full cost of

the camp which was $600.

National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). This annual, nationwide, science program is held

at the Australian National University in Canberra for two weeks in January. Nominees face

extreme competition for a place in this excellent program as there are only 400 students

selected Australia wide. Our candidate from Kadina High Campus for the 2017 Forum

withdrew but we have an impressive candidate for the 2018 Forum, Maddison Virtue, from

Lismore High Campus. She will face a selection panel at Bond University on 8 August for one

of 24 student places allocated to District 9640 for next year’s Forum. If Maddison is selected

our Club will contribute $2,000 towards her cost of attending.

Interest has been expressed by students from two Lismore schools in two of the Rotary

programs for younger students such as the Conocophillips Science Experience, held at a

number of our closer universities in September, November or December 2017, for Year 9 or

Year 10 students. Another is the Rotary Youth Program for Enrichment held in the Gold

Coast hinterland for Year 10 students in May 2018. We anticipate having candidates for

these and hope for candidates for other well known Youth Programs such as YEP, RYPEN,

RYTS in the next year.

Two of our Club members have continued, somewhat irregularly, an initiative commenced

last year. This consists of listening to, and correcting, student’s reading at Lismore Heights

Primary School for a period on Thursday mornings. The classroom teacher, Sharon Ryan,

Lismore Height’s Assistant Principal, tells us that this is greatly appreciated and makes a

real difference to the students.

VOCATIONAL SERVICE REPORT 2016-2017 We had the pleasure of five vocational visits this year for our Club’s Thursday night ‘away’, and one on a Sunday to New Italy. All were attended by members and their partners. The first was a conducted tour through the newly opened emergency department of Lismore Base Hospital. Ian Hill’s daughter Kim did a wonderful job of guiding us through the impressive facility and informing one and all of the complexities of modern emergency services. GROW the Mental Health facility in South Lismore was an eye opener. We were well informed on the services provided by this most important public necessity. We were treated to a tasty evening meal of spaghetti and trimmings to cap off a good night. Our Sunday visit was to New Italy where the first boat people settled in Australia. John Barnes the New Italy President spoke on the history of the settlement and of plans for the future. The museum is at present undergoing renovations and is a credit to the Italian community for the progress that has been made. Food and drinks were laid on when we visited Richmond Waste. Members and partners were guided through the cardboard recycling section, as well as the oil separation and maintenance section and offices. We were most fortunate as our host donated our dinner fees back to us, so we had a night out, got fed, and ended with $750 in the whippy. Drinks were on the house also. Our ‘old ever green’ Wilson Park Special School was once again an enjoyable and most satisfying night. The wonderful and important work the management and staff achieve at this complex has to be seen to be believed. A beautiful meal was enjoyed by all. Bob Barnes Vocational Service Director 2016-2017

INTERNATIONAL REPORT 2016-2017 Early on in this financial period, members of the board considered that due to the continuing increase in the average age of members and the demands on the time and resources of the Club, that a greater portion of these resources should be directed to matters closer to home. Although therefore the activities of Lismore West for this year were more focussed on local matters, the Club continued to make significant contributions to International Service with financial support for overseas projects, meeting our club targeted giving to the Rotary Foundation, and hosting a GSE visit from district 1461 in Denmark. The Rotary Foundation The Foundation’s mission is to support the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational and cultural exchanges programs. The Foundation sets a target of US$100 per member for Rotary Clubs. This year our club and members nearly doubled this target by donating over $5000 (AUD) to Rotary’s Centurion and other programs. Sustainable Cambodia. Lismore West continued its sponsorship of two students in a primary school, members of the “Kangaroo Club”. This sponsorship covers both their school fees and their living expenses at home. Two other children are sponsored by individual club members. There continues to be some correspondence between Club member’s families and children at the school. This year President Rod travelled to Cambodia under a program organised by the Sustainable Cambodia Foundation. He informed us that Cambodia still ranks as one of the highest in international poverty with 40 percent of people in the rural areas earning less than 35 cents per day. The way forward seems slow; however, advances are being made. Sustainable Cambodia empowers families to create self-sustaining communities with clean water, an increasing supply of food, and other opportunities for self-reliance. Vegetables are now being added to their main irrigation crops of rice and dried fish. The aim is to spread this model throughout the whole of Cambodia. The Club still continues to receive honourable mention for the ongoing benefits relating to the ‘Concrete Tank Manufacturing Facility’ provided by our club under a matching grant to the Sustainable Cambodia enterprise in Pursat in Cambodia Sister Club – Yamato Takada In the early part of this financial year our club received a very generous donation of 160,000 Yen (just under $2,000AUD) from our sister club Yamato Takada to assist flood victims from the earlier curtain raiser to this years’ disaster. The board agreed to split this donation between St Vinnies, Lifeline and Salvos to compensate for their costs of clearing up. Sister Club – Cashmere NZ We continue to communicate with our sister club in Cashmere NZ. They are right in the heart of earthquake territory and they are very much in our thoughts. We continue to receive their weekly bulletin “Spoke” which our indefatigable secretary forwards with religious fervour. (Well done Graeme) The maternity hospital in Fiji With the able assistance of Trevor Hopf, the club has been able to assist the maternity hospital in Fiji with some cash to carry out repairs to their buildings which were damaged in the cyclones they were caught up in last year. We recently received a letter and photos showing how our money was put to good use. Suitably encouraged and motivated by this correspondence, your board have approved a further donation of $500 which will be passed on by Trevor. Used Stamps for Rotary. Lismore West remains one of the Clubs still collecting these stamps and sending them to be sorted and sold by a dedicated member of the Rotary Club of Burleigh Heads and his wife. Over the years they have raised over $50,000 which is given to Donations in Kind. Overall I consider it has been a satisfactory year though the need is always so much greater than the resources that are available. I thank the members of Lismore West for their efforts that raised the money we were able to donate to the above areas of need. I trust that we will continue to work, and give, generously in the year ahead.

John Egglestone Service Director 2016-2017
