President Esther Roadnight OAM

As my two years as your President comes to an end it has given me time to reflect on the achievements of this great club during that time. I will concentrate on this past 12 months as the previous 12 months was covered at Changeover last year.

I will elaborate in more detail when I speak at the Changeover event.

I would like to thank all members and their families for their support and encouragement throughout this year. I have been a Rotarian for 21 years now, three of them with the Kalgoorlie club since I transferred. Rotary has been an integral part of mine and my family’s lives for all those years.

I have spent all but the first year of my Rotary membership in positions on the Boards and have served in all the Avenues of Service. Four years as President across the two clubs. Three years as Assistant Governor and more years than I can remember as part of the GSE

now Vocational Exchange committee. Vocational Exchange in 2016 will be to Malaysia. I am also part of the ROMAC District Committee. I have also been asked to become more involved in the Club to Club Youth Exchange Program.

When I prepared a review of our year to the end of December I was surprised, as were members of the Club, to realise what we had achieved up until then.

Researching what we had done from then until the end of June has seen the list of achievements grow significantly. So sit back, read and enjoy and bask in the knowledge that we certainly have managed to Light up Rotary!

There have been many highlights throughout the year, but I have to say the absolute highlight would have been our last meeting when I had the honour of presenting a PHF to Ross Collins. Ross became a Rotarian in October 2006. Since that time he has been an active Rotarian.

From President Esther ...

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie meets at the Tower Hotel on Mondays at 6.00pm for 6.30pm. Visitors welcome!

Last year the Club developed a Club Plan to assist us with activities throughout the year. This year Directors and Club members used that as the basis for this year’s plan. Some tried and true activities with some new additions.

During the year we started a Joker Jackpot. Thank you Angelo for looking after this each week for us. We managed to get well over the Jackpot before someone drew the Joker. Gloria was our inaugural winner of the $500.

In January 2014 the club purchased a Money Spinner. The spinner has been located in McDonalds’ Brookman Street store. The total raised for this year is $6805.40. A percentage of what we raise is given to McDonalds for their charities. We presented their owner, Scott Gunson, with a cheque for $500 in December. When the amount reaches $500 again another presentation will be made to Scott. A huge thank you to George Roadnight for being our money collector and counter.

After receiving documents from District, the Club has gone through the process of updating our Constitution. We have had a slight hiccup, but this will be attended to over the next month.

Our last meeting for 2014 was a Family meeting. This gave us the opportunity to thank family members for their support throughout the year. We decided not to exchange gifts this year, rather members would make a donation to St Jude's School in Tanzania. The Board added to the amount donated to make a final donation of $1000 to assist to fund teachers at the school.

District Assembly this year was held in Esperance.

Kelsey and I attended for the Club.

The Club has a shed facility at Cruickshank Sports Arena. It was decided to have a clean-up and see if we couldn't store all of our assets in the one place. Some new shelving, some trestles and chairs and some very sturdy padlocks and the shed is looking great. Some small items still to be purchased and the shed will be as we want it. Thank you to Club members who assisted. Again, thank you to George Roadnight who was called away from his gardening so we could use his ute to take rubbish to the tip and collect items from the sea container.

In 2012 the Club decided on a new Club Shirt. It has been a bit of a process, but now all members who ordered a Club Shirt will have them within the next week.

I asked Lin a few months ago if she would consider revamping our website. It was badly in need of an overhaul. Lin agreed and has been working diligently and hopefully we will be able to launch the site at Changeover.

The Club undertakes a number of Community events each year. These events are generally outdoor events. I did some research and put to the Board that we consider purchasing a Marquee for our use. All agreed this was what we needed to do. The Marquee was used for the first time at the Multi Cultural Festival. It is very striking.

Being a member of Rotary is not all fundraising and work. It is also about building up the friendships between members. To this end a number of social functions were held throughout the year.

Members always enjoy attending the Repertory Club Christmas Show. The meal is always good and the entertainment is enjoyable and fun.

Club members attend the production of Stage Left Theatre Troop's Dimboola a few weeks ago. It was a great fun night filled with lots of laughs. Right Narelle!

For our first meeting back for the 2015 Ken and Charmaine invited us to their home for a social afternoon to start off the year. It was a very relaxing afternoon. Thank you for opening your home to us Ken and Charmaine.

The Rotary Club of Hannans invited us to join with them for a social evening at the Beaten Track Brewery. This was a great night enjoyed by us all.

The night after our very successful Quiz Night club members attended the Giants basketball game to wind down. A great night made all the better by a win by the Giants.

For some time I had been thinking we needed a flyer to promote our club to potential new members and the Community at large. The Community Expo in February was the catalyst for me to put a draft together. This was done with some expert finishing touches by member Cherie Wallace. The final document was approved by the Board and saw its first outing at the Expo.

Whenever the club is out in the Community we are there with our Club shirts. To further make our presence felt I put to the Board that we should consider getting some Tear drop banners. We are now the proud possessor of 2 tear drop banners that are proudly on display whenever we are out in the Community.

Margaret and the staff at the Tower Hotel look after us each and every week. Whenever I have asked Margaret for anything she has always been most helpful. A huge thank you to Margaret and the staff for all they do for us.

Guest speakers are always an opportunity for our guests to share their story either about their occupation, organisation or just personal life. We have had 12 speakers throughout the year

Mike Lee from the Goldfields Brass Band to tell us all about the band, some if its history and vision for the future.

Katrina Carlisle, Department of Justice, spoke to us about the Court system.

Diane Blade from Department of Housing spoke to us about how the Department of Housing works and the area her staff manage.

Mike Lee, Police Forensics, spoke to us about his time in

America at a facility similar to the one in Patricia Cornwell's "The Body Farm". Very interesting.

Sarah Hinton, Rydges Kalgoorlie, was our first Guest Speaker for 2015. Sarah spoke to the club about a fundraising idea that the club could participate in. The Board and members decided that this would not be an activity that would suit our club.

Robert Hicks, CEO at GIFSA, spoke to us about the role of GIFSA in our region and the scope of works they undertake.

Richard Moore, OIC Esperance Police, talked to us about policing in the Esperance Police District.

There were numerous snake sightings in the built up areas of the City and considerable discussion was taking place about sighting and what people needed to do. We asked Wayne Moroney from the Department of Parks and Wildlife to come and talk to us about snakes and what to do if we came across one in our backyards. This made for some lively discussion.

Ashleigh Tapper from Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Voyages spoke to the Club about opportunities for community members to be able to participate in Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Voyages.

A very interesting speaker was Jamie Crombie who was a Past District Youth Exchange student 22 years ago, during the year of Angelo Sbizzirri's Presidency. Jamie spoke about the impact being on Exchange had on his life.

John Bowler spoke to us about his life after politics. John has managed to keep himself very busy.

Our very own Danny Vincent spoke to us about why and how he joined the Police Service, the different postings he has had and the impact that has had on his life.

The Club provided a new computer and printer for the Goldfields Brass Band as their equipment has decided it was not going to work any more.

Parkrun celebrated their 1st anniversary in October 2014. The Club cooked a sausage sizzle for the participants after they had completed the course.

The new team at Retravision asked the club to provide

From President Esther ...

Page 5: Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie - Club Bulletin - 4 July 2015 - Changeover Edition

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie

sausage sizzles outside their store every 6 weeks or so. Unfortunately, these were not as successful as we all would have liked so in the end we let Retravision know that we would no longer be able to participate. We have kept the door open to try again at some time in the future.

Long Arm of Rotary - sometimes it's not about money or us physically doing anything it's about connecting the right people to get something done. We did that last year when a friend in Kalgoorlie asked if there was a possibility of assistance for a family member who was in the metropolitan area who had a terminal disease. We were able to make some connections and the works at the person’s house were able to be nearly completed prior to him dying. He died knowing that the works were going to be completed.

Wattle Day is celebrated on 1 August each year. This year 1 August fell on a Monday and happened to be the night we were going to welcome Kim Eckert as the first Friend of the Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie. Very appropriate as Kim is the CEO of Kalgoorlie Urban Landcare Group (KBULG). We celebrated both events with a wattle seed cake.

In August we continued the partnership we have developed with KBULG and participated in KBULG's Tree Planting Day. Member Sue Morley won one of the vouchers for participants on the day.

A couple of weeks out from the event we were asked to do the breakfast for Relay for Life. Thanks to Ross for

the work he did finding out if the other clubs had members who could assist and source the food required. At the end of the day it was too short a notice for the Clubs to be able to assist.

In November the club participated in the second KBULG Propagation Day. There were not very many of us as it was during Race Round, but a good effort by those who were able to go along.

Members had a very enjoyable evening at the Lighting of the Christmas Tree. We again ran a very successful Chocolate Wheel. Hams and chocolates being very popular. The chickens did not do so well so will not be used in 2015. We are currently having Men's Shed repair the Wheel for us so it is in good order ready for this year’s lighting of the tree.

The three Clubs participated in the Chamber of Commerce organised Community Expo in February. A great opportunity to showcase Rotary to new and older members of our community. Thank you Cherie for organising for this year.

On 7 December members were at Hammond Park to cook and prepare for the Norton Gold Christmas Party. This was the second year that we assisted Norton Gold. A nice little fundraiser for the Club.

The Club joined together with the Rotary Clubs of Boulder and Hannans on Australia Day to again put

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie

together the Australia Day Great Aussie Breakfast. This year we served 1500 to 2000 breakfasts. A great effort by the clubs. Each of the clubs had a number of members away which would have meant a real stretch to keep up with the preparing and serving of the breakfasts. Headspace personnel came to our assistance and helped us out on the morning.

In recognition of their assistance the three clubs will be funding a marquee for Headspace at a total cost of $1786.40.

The club was invited by Danny Sheehan to apply for a permit to be at the Bush Two Up for four Sundays over January and February. Two of those Sundays were extremely hot!! The club raised over $2000 from the four Sundays.

CREATE Foundation approached the Club to cook a sausage sizzle for an event they hold each year for Foster children and parents. Our club was not able to assist with the cooking for the event, but we did provide

the sausages, onion, rolls, etc.

The club asked the Boulder and Hannans clubs to join us at the Multi Cultural Festival to raise funds for Shelterbox. See International.

Premier screening of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Free Dress days at Council raised $1557.75 for End Polio Now. See International.

Battle of the Brains Quiz Night raised over $6000 well up on the around $4000 raised the previous year

Beneficiaries for this year are Kalgoorlie Radio Lollipop, Goldfields Women's Refuge and Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Voyage. We will be seeking expressions of interest from young people to participate in a voyage in December.

Late last year we were asked if we could assist an elderly gentleman in Victoria Street with a yard clean-up. A team of around six members spent a couple of hours and made a huge difference in the yard.

As President I received an invitation to Morning Tea with the Prime Minister. After making enquiries I managed to have the invitation extended to include any members of the Club who wished to attend. A number of us enjoyed the event at the Kalgoorlie Town Hall.

Members cooked up the sausage sizzle for the Headspace Launch. A continuation of the partnership that is developing between the organisations.

For the first time the Club laid wreaths at the Anzac Day Dawn Services in Boulder and Kalgoorlie. It has always puzzled me why Rotary don't lay wreaths. It is pleasing that the Board agreed we should.

We were invited to provide a sausage sizzle at Blackwoods Trade Day. This was a very pleasant morning for Club members who assisted.

The Club once again supported Bowelscan. 117 kits were sold this year compared to 80 last year. Thank you Ross for looking after the logistics of the Club supporting this program.

After a number of approaches from different people both within and outside our community the Kalgoorlie Club invited Felix from St Jude's School Tanzania to visit Kalgoorlie-Boulder. I had to return to Perth after having surgery and once again George stepped in. He just said whatever you had planned I will do. Don't worry about it. Felix stayed in our home where George looked after Felix as only George can! George took him to Kambalda to visit the school there and O'Connor

Primary School. He then made sure he arrived for the joint Rotary meeting on time.

The Club supported the School with a $1000 donation in December. Anne Skinner, who is an Africa at present, will be visiting the school and delivering some much needed school supplies that she purchased with $500 provided by the Club. We are looking forward to Anne telling us about her experience when she returns.

The Club has again supported Shelterbox. We purchased a box after the devastating hurricane in Vanuatu and after the Nepal earthquake, purchased another.

Premier screening of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Free Dress days at Council raised $1557.75 for End Polio Now.

The Club has continued to support and sponsor one of the Career breakfasts for high school students that are held in August each year. The Club has committed to supporting this again in 2015.

For the 3rd year the Club is involved in the Club to Club Youth Exchange with Texas. In year one we hosted the students and organised their itinerary whilst they were here in the City. Last year we were unable to provide that support and Boulder Club very ably provided the support. This year, in fact this week we have hosted five students. We have participated in a joint Clubs meeting hosted by Boulder. Thank you Mario and your club members. The students have spent a half day at John Paul College and another half day at Eastern Goldfields College. They have also spent some time exploring the City and surrounds.

The Club called for expressions of interest from students

From President Esther ...

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie

who would like to be considered for Exchange to go to Texas in December/January. Kelsey and I have interviewed three very suitable students. We will be interviewing their parents after the school holidays. Then the work begins with District for the planning for their exchange.

The Club is also going to be supporting some young people to participate in the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Voyage in December this year. Expressions of interest have been called for within the schools. Kelsey and I will be interviewing the students who apply.

The Club enjoys participating in Vocational visits to businesses and facilities throughout the year. This year has seen us visit the Kalgoorlie Courthouse. This visit gave members an opportunity to see the works that have been done there for this magnificent new facility. We invited Boulder and Hannans members to join us.

Our next Vocational visit was to Kalgoorlie Cemetery. Staff gave us a bit of the history of the Kalgoorlie, Boulder and Pioneer Cemeteries. Then answered member questions. We then had a look at the Cremator and a specially dug grave. Boulder and Hannans Rotarians were invited to join us for this visit. The Manager and Leading Hand joined us for dinner at the Tower afterwards. Thank you to Gerald Roadnight.

Out third Vocational visit was to the new Headspace Facility in Brookman Street.

Friends

This year I put a proposal to the Board to have a Friends of the Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie. This was based loosely on similar programs run by other Clubs.

Friends of the Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie is designed to provide an opportunity to people who are not in a position to be able to join Rotary at the present time, but who have expressed a desire to assist the Club, and the Community, by becoming involved in the club's projects and activities and to attend meetings from time to time. A Friend of the

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie may be likely to become a member at a future date.

To date the Club has welcomed two Friends of the Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie:

Kim Eckart in August

Sarah Lim in May

Note:

Lloyd Morley has recently been inducted into the Rotary Club of Kunnunurra.

Lea Van Rensburg is shortly to be inducted into the Rotary Club of Kalamunda.

Edward Brennan was inducted into the Rotary Club of Gladstone. He has since left Gladstone for Cairns and I am sure will continue his membership of Rotary there.

James Mercer-King has joined a Rotary Club.

Georgia Underwood has approached the Rotary Club of Camberwell with a view to joining.

It is so good to see previous members continuing their support and membership of Rotary Clubs in their new place of residence and work.

Nine members of the Club became Centurions at the beginning of the Rotary year and seven members have recently become or renewed their Centurion membership.

In October/November all members took Foundation money boxes to place in their place of work or for loose change at home.

Five Members of the Club participated in the Foundation Grants Seminar. This means that the Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie is now qualified to seek Foundation Grants.

I am sure there are other activities that we have undertaken that I have forgotten. None of these could have happened without the support and enthusiasm of Club members. My heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you.

Member Ross Collins was honoured with a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie on Monday 22 June 2015. The following was read by President Esther Roadnight.

The Paul Harris Fellow is named for Paul Harris, who founded Rotary International with three business associates in Chicago in 1905. The Paul Harris Fellow was established in his honour in 1957 to express appreciation for a contribution of US$1000 to the humanitarian and educational programs of the Rotary Foundation.

Those programs include an array of projects that save and invigorate the lives of people around the world and enhance international friendship and understanding.

Foundation programs provide educational opportunities, food, potable water, health care, immunisations, and shelter for millions of persons.

These activities are funded, implemented and managed by Rotarians and Rotary Clubs around the globe.

Rotarians also designate a Paul Harris Fellow to recognise another person whose life demonstrates a shared purpose with the objectives and mission of The Rotary Foundation to building world understanding and peace.

Ross Collins can you come forward please?

Ross Collins you were selected to receive this recognition because the Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie believes your life exemplifies the humanitarian and educational objectives of The Rotary Foundation.

We thank you for demonstrating in his life and vocation, a

commitment to helping persons in need, here and around the world.

I have personally known Ross since our children went to school together here in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. We had many an adventure raising funds for the school.

Ross became a Rotarian in October 2006. Since that time he has been an active Rotarian. Apart from assistance at various and many Rotarian events, Ross has been an active member within the club:

2007-08 Attendance Officer

2008-09 Attendance Officer

2009-10 International Director

2010-11 International Director

2011-12 President-Elect & Administration Officer (Club Service)

2012-13 President

2013-14 Past President & Attendance Officer

2014-15 Attendance Officer

Ross, therefore, it gives me great pleasure to present to you, on behalf of the trustees of The Rotary Foundation, a Certificate and Lapel Pin.

The certificate states that you have been named a Paul Harris Fellow “in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations between peoples of the world”.

We urge you to wear the Paul Harris Fellow pin to all Rotary events, as a symbol of your appreciation for, and support of, programs of The Rotary Foundation.

Please accept our sincere congratulations and sincere appreciation for your commitment to our common goals of world understanding and peace.

Just before I ask members and guests to stand and recognise Ross, can Yvonne come forward please and join Ross?

We all know without the support, and at times, understanding of our partners and family we would not be able to do the good works we do in the community and globally.

In recognition of this support Yvonne, we would like you to accept this small token (flowers) of our acknowledgment of that support.

Members and Guests, can I please ask you to stand and congratulate and recognise the newest Paul Harris Fellow, Ross Collins.

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie

Thank you Esther for your words of encouragement and for your confidence in me, for your promise of support given to me and my team, and to my club- Thank you for placing your confidence and trust in me to serve as your President.

Without the support of my daughter Rebekah, who tags along without questioning or complaining to our events, thank you for inspiring me to be the best I can be!

To my partner Dean who accompanied me to PETS and supporting me in my Rotary journey – Thank you. My family that is here tonight for always getting behind my crazy ideas, your unwavering support of me means so much. Thank You!

It may seem strange to acknowledge my family and close friends, but in Rotary we all acknowledge that FAMILY COMES FIRST, then work, then ROTARY but for many of us Rotary is part of us and our family and friends get to share our great experiences as well.

Well I am going to say that I am wanting to have a year where we use the “F” word a lot.

I want to have an “F” year and I challenge you all to help our club do this and I can guarantee that we will achieve our goals for the year.

So what does this “F” year consist of?

• “F” for Fun

• “F” for Family

• “F” for Friendship

• “F” for Food

• “F” for Fundraising

• “F” for Fitness

• “F” for Foundation

and you will think of more ‘“F’s

FUN, FELLOWSHIP, FAMILY & FRIENDS are ALL important ‘F’ words for us.

How many ‘F’s’ can we enjoy in one year? The choice is ours!

My main aim for the club in the coming year is to have fun and to seek out opportunities for service in our great community, to increase recognition of our club both in the Rotary community and in the community at large - the world needs more Rotarians!

If you will permit me I would like to share with you my initial doubts that I would not be qualified, however after being reassured by Esther, Sue and my number 1 supporter Rebekah I realised;- - I love to eat, to socialize, and to be involved in worthwhile endeavours! I will give anything a go and encourage all of you to do the same. The Perfect

Rotarian.

I do have some proven leadership skills as I have presided over several other and clubs - but I am not interested in a power trip - I am confident about this role because of the overwhelming support of my club, my Rotary family who will always have my back!. I know how to follow when it is sensible to do so and what an amazing group of people to walk with through the next 12months.

I have learned to embrace change as it is a vital element of growth in life and some of the worst changes in my life have had the best results;--every ending is a new beginning.

I am honoured to be taking over from Esther being myself the 3rd female president in the Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie’s history is humbling. I also have the first female president Sue as one of my mentors, I’m sure I cannot wrong!

With the guidance of my peers and the enthusiasm of the Board I hope to increase our local projects such as the KBULG propagation days and continue our established links with Radio Lolly Pop, Goldfields Women’s Refuge and send more of our young people to Leeuwin Experience and to attend Rotary Youth Leadership programs such as Rebekah was able to attend some years ago RYLA, RYPEN and volunteer at Handicamp.

Our club has a great connection with St Jude’s School in Tanzania where Rotarian Anne Skinner is currently visiting, the members personally supported a teacher and student year at Christmas instead of exchanging gifts.

Through my involvement over the past 2 years I have experienced wonderful fellowship and developed friendships and cannot wait for the year ahead.

You all have a burning desire to be the change you want to see in the world,

You want to make a difference but you're struggling to figure out what you can do to have a meaningful impact

You're willing to be everything that you can be.

And ready to do everything that you can do so that you can truly express your gift.

A genuine difference in the lives of others and in our world.

My fellow Rotarians -You are a gift to the world. And you always have been!
