Our guest last week, Mr P Heath, gave a very interesting talk. Many people wanted to ask him questions about his journey in theeducation field.

Home host either the first or second prize winner of an English speaking competition being run

by the Rotary

Club of Taipei

From Tony Trumble

I would appreciate consideration by the Rotary Club of Ginninderra whether one of its members would be willing to home host eitherthe first or second prize winner of an English speaking competition being run by the Rotary Club of Taipei. The essence is that the firstprize winner will be studying at ANU from 18 July to 6 September and second prize winner from 22 July to 23 August. Details about thecompetition can be found in the link provided by Bruce Yang of the Taipei club.

This will be the second time that Belconnen has been involved. The first time was very successful but I am not overly confident that Ican get two host families this time.

The prize winners will be young adults, probably 21-22. They will speak fluent English, albeit with an American accent, they have donewell in a very tough competition. They need to be accommodated and fed. They will be financially self sufficient and fully understandthat there is no money from Rotary in Australia. On the weekends they will want to see Australian culture whether that be kangaroos,BBQs, skiing, trips to Canberra attractions. The best things they will both want to see so there is opportunity for one Rotarian to takeboth students to the same attraction.

The Gungahlin Uniting Church is in the initial stages of starting a food pantry. The building is underway at the rear of the UnitingChurch on Valley Way Gungahlin.

The fit out of this food pantry is the next step. One of our Club Members who is also a member of the Uniting Church congregationmentioned this great project and how they were looking for some help with the fit out. The Aurora Gungahlin club has agreed todonate the funds required to purchase a Large display fridge and a chest freezer has been sourced from a generous Rotarian.

There is a need for shelving for the storage and displaying of food stuffs, if your club is able to assist can you please contact eithermyself or Shirley Williams.

Many Thanks

News and Views from our travelling MembersPosted by Steve Fielding on May 12, 2013

Allan in ThailandWell it is now over 5 months since I arrived in Bangkok and the time has gone very quickly. I have been back home a couple of timesfor quick visits, including a few days over Christmas. Jenny returned with me to Bangkok (with a week in Singapore on the way) in lateDecember and stayed here for three weeks before returning home to resume work at the UC.

On the work front they are keeping me pretty busy and have just extended my contract until the end of July. After that, who knows? Have made a few friends at work and have a good group of people working for me. Plus the work is very interesting and satisfying, sothat has worked out quite well.

Since I have been here I have managed to see quite a few of the tourist attractions, thanks to some Thai friends who have shownJenny (when she was here) and I around quite a bit. Have done a bit of shopping and while generally things are cheaper here than athome some things, notably electronics and wine, are quite a bit more expensive. However, the food here is very cheap and quitedelicious. I'm not keen on spicy food, but still have a good range of dishes to choose from.

Haven't ventured out of Bangkok yet, but still have three months here so may get to the River Kwai one weekend. Have also beenaround for some of the festivals they have (mostly Buddhist festivals) and have enjoyed the traditions associated with them. Observing (and partaking in) local festivities is one of the more interesting aspects of travel.

Haven't been to Rotary here as the only English speaking club I could find meets at Lunchtime and about 90 minutes from where Iwork, so too impractical I'm afraid. However, I do try and keep up with what's happening at Ginninderra via the emails.

Missing the family but hoping that Jenny will come across again before I go back.

Regards to all at Rotary

Allan

Rod Jory in Austria

I've been in Vienna about a month now and am enjoying myself as I always do.

I arrived in snow at minus 3 degrees, dressed for a Canberra summer day. My warm clothes were on the other side of town. Isurvived.

I have very little Rotary activity. The city Clubs here are of millionaires and meet in a posh hotel, all of them. They are the cheque bookClubs. While they are ultra-polite to visitors and speak to and of them in English this is an imposition on them. The suburban Clubsare like ordinary working Clubs, you find them selling sausages and beer, but they are busy people and while they can all speakEnglish they would never get through the day if they had to do everything twice. In short, I don't fit either.

Last week I hosted a group from my old Club, Seaford Martello in Sussex. The Club runs an annual "overseas" trip which this yearhappened to be Vienna. I'm still an honorary member of that Club.

We had a great time, visiting all of the sights of the city and eating at a good cross section of restaurants.

I am sorry to have to report that this has been my only Rotary activity. The emails which come quite frequently keep me up-to-date.

I am sorry to have to report that this has been my only Rotary activity. The emails which come quite frequently keep me up-to-date.

The idea of a common meeting between a Men's shed, a Rotary club and a Uniting Church is rather intruiging. If only other groupscould do the same, especially between the churches themselves. Perhaps Rotary should take that on as a project.

Keep smiling as winter approaches and the sun shines here with more to come.

Michael Mulgrew is Ginninderra's Club protection Officer. He is responsible to the Club Board for the checking and validation of allvolunteer checks relating to working with children and vulnerable persons in their community or under District 9710 Youth Programs. The Club Board is legally responsible for the protection of youth/vulnerable people under its programs.

ROTARY CLUBS in ACT

The Working with Vulnerable People Act has been enacted and it is up to individual Rotarians in the ACT to register with the Office of

Regulatory Services between now and 7th November, 2013.

3. Take the form and the required forms of identification to either an ACT Govt Shopfront or the ORS.

4. Sit back and wait for the card in the mail.

Club Protection Officers please forward the name, card number and expiry date of each registered club member to me [email protected] for inclusion on the District Data Base.

Exemptions from registration

Under the WWVP Act Rotarians or non-Rotarians involved in a Rotary program are not required to be registered to engage in aregulated activity if the person is—

engaged in the activity (other than an overnight camp for children) for not more than—

(i) 3 days in any 4-week period; and

(ii) 7 days in any 12-month period;

or is registered under a corresponding law and—

(iii) the activity is substantially similar to a regulated activity the person is allowed to engage in under the corresponding law; and

(iv) the person is engaged in the activity for not more than 28 days in any 12-month period

A little complicated but may assist those who are reluctant to register.

The exemptions allow for volunteers to participate in a Rotary program for a limited time. It also allows for a person registeredthrough another organisation to be recognised, as well as interstate registered volunteers.

Centenary of CanberraPosted by Steve Fielding on Feb 10, 2013

As you will be aware, Rotary District 9710 has partnered with the ACT Government to provide opportunities for families or individualsto visit Canberra as part of the Centenary of Canberra celebrations. Rotary will assist with some of the costs (through a grant from theACT Government) and Rotarians will be asked to provide some home hosting.

However, to get this project of the ground, we need the skills of Rotarians to assist the Project Committee, led by DG Phil. I haveattached a list of the organisational requirements and would ask you to circulate this to all Rotarians. Please urge all to consideroffering their services to the project - through me in the first instance. I appreciate the project lends itself to Canberra-basedRotarians, but there are also positions - such as in media and PR - where skills can be applied remotely, so assistance is soughtfrom all. (THe list was attached to the email sent (from Steve Fielding)with this message to members on 30 January)

If you need further details, please give me a call. I will call you from time to time to see if anyone has indicated interest in being

If you need further details, please give me a call. I will call you from time to time to see if anyone has indicated interest in being

involved. This is an ideal forum for Rotary to promote its image in the Canberra and wider communities.

Please give this request as much impact as you are able.
