Member Spot Light July Rotarians that “won the lottery” were Van Baker, Jonathon Swatts, Larry Collins, April Mason, and Bruce Akins. Garth Forster also won but didn't stick around for a picture. If you missed their story on the day they introduced themselves be sure to ask for a personal rendition. And be ready with your story, you might win at the next meeting!

President's MessageThis year's theme is "Light Up Rotary". Fireworks are gorgeous but they are alsovery noisy and hazardous to your health. Although I am extremely excited about theupcoming events, I can tell you that I am riding the “Big Bang Sound Waves” thatcome with this great honor. It is amazing that the more I get involved the more Ilearn how big Rotary is. If you are not aware, we are members of an outstandingorganization. Last Thursday, Kelly Hughes, Larry Collins, Phillip Breedlove, MarkStone, and I joined about 70 other local Rotarians (from various clubs throughoutDistrict 6900) in an Area Development seminar that focused on Membership and

“The Foundation.” Phillip and I went to The Foundation discussion while everyone else attended Membership Matters. Although I have heard versions of both presentations on several occasions I wasfocused on the things that stood out to me this time. It’s like hearing a great pastor’s sermon, depending on your circumstances or frame of mind, you could hear that same sermon on different occasions and walk away with an entirely different message. Next month’s Newsletter will focus on some of the great information we learned. Please remember that on Monday, August 11th, 7:00-8:30, Jessica and I will be hosting the Rotary Family at a Social for District Governor Alicia Michael. We will have food, fun, and some great fellowship. You will have an opportunity to spend time with Alicia and Anya, as well as enjoy a great show. The very next day Alicia will address our club at our Tuesday meeting that will be held at Lamar Career Academy.

President, Rotary Club of Barnesville

M eet Anya Griffin, GRSP Student I live with my mother, twin brother, Ben and our dog, Lottie, in a small market townin south-east England. I am close with my family, including my grandparents on mymother’s side, who have been like extra parents to me and my brother. Mygrandparents live about an hour away from us, but we try to spend time with them asoften as we can. My town, Alresford, is best known for its watercress and also its‘Watercress Line’; a steam train that runs through mid-Hampshire. My nearest city isWinchester, which is famous for its Arthurian round table that has been housed in theGreat Hall for over 700 years. The city is also rich in literary history and influencedwriters including John Keats and Jane Austen, both of whom lived in Winchester. My hobbies include reading, writing, performing arts, running, swimming and singing in a choir. I intend to start a blog to document my experience in Georgia and hope to get inspiration for my writing while I’m here. I am really excited to have been accepted into Gordon State College as I find the American way of life to be very relaxed and the people really hospitable and friendly. I think Georgia is particularly interesting, as the Southern way of life is so culturally different from that of England. I am really keen to start at Gordon State, where I will be majoring in English and taking minors in American Studies andPhilosophy: Gender Studies. I have only been here a few days but have met so many warm, friendly and generous people! I can’t wait to meet all the other students, who will allow me to see even more ofthe American way. I am really grateful to the Rotary Clubs of Georgia and Winchester, who have allowed me to have this amazing experience. I hope to broaden my horizons, learn a lot and meet even more lovely people on the way!

What is in our Future? There are several events coming upfor our club. Mark these dates on yourcalendar! If you have an event you wantto add to the list let a club officer know.
