ASHMOREINACTION

Meeting Highlights President Pat opened the meeting welcoming visitors Paris Smith (our RYLA candidate) her mother, grandmother and guest speaker Darryl Murtha from Global Youth Energised.

Reports from members… Pat advised that the Ashmore city shopping centre was to undertake major renovations beginning in April lasting for approx. six months and the club would not be able to continue the car boot sale at this site. However, alternative site are actively being perused. Rock advised that the pavers were to be lifted at the hub in preparation for concrete flooring and asked for volunteers tomorrow at 7am. Barbara asked for volunteers for the working bee to be conducted on Saturday at the Sanctuary. Norm advised members of an upcoming club promotion at Ashmore City. Paris gave a highly entertaining account of her time at RYLA, bringing a touch of song and dance into her talk stating that RYLA had changed her life and she enjoyed it so much she has volunteered as a leader for the next event. Darryl was born and bred here on the Gold Coast attending Southport State High. He joined the Queensland police Service shortly after leaving school and had a 33-year career with the police serving at various locations throughout Queensland. He served as a General Duties officer, criminal investigator particularly in child abuse, finishing in charge of Police recruiting and training. Darryl moved to the USA after his police career working for multinational corporations such as Tupperware and Financial Investment companies. Upon returning to Australia, he commenced working as a Risk and Safety consultant in the mining and construction industries. During 2014 Darryl became gravely ill and is recovering from a major illness and has been inspired by his life choices and experiences to develop the concept of Global Youth Energised to encourage youth to realise that by using the concept of ‘pay it forward’ the can make a difference in the lives of others.

This movement is helping others to celebrate life using all the potential of their individual skills and gifts and to be victors and champions rather than victims. Darryl has spent four years developing and refining the concept and is now actively promoting the concept to school age children through private and Christian based schools and is utilising social media to share stories of youth achievements and successes. Darryl discussed the experiences of local girl who talked her school into taking three containers of unneeded equipment to Tonga schools, co-ordinates radio lollipop throughout SEQ, feeds homeless two days a week – an example of one girl making a difference. He concluded by asking Rotarian who knew of a young person with a story to tell to get in contact with him so he can share their story of success.

Next Meeting Next Wednesday 20th March will at the Ashmore Road Steak and Seafood. Our speaker is Kim Storen who will update the club on KIVA.

If you have already registered for the District 9640 Conference, in Lismore, on the 29 - 31 March 2019, thank you.

If you were going to attend the Conference, but have not yet registered it would assist the organising committee if your registration were completed as soon as possible.

If you are still deciding whether to attend, we can offer many reasons to do so.

Sunday the 31st March 2019, will be two years to the day since Lismore and Murwillumbah was devastated by flood. The city has recovered, but it has been a difficult time for many businesses. The Conference venue, the Lismore and District Workers Club was badly affected and has had

major renovations. The cost to delegates has been kept to a minimum, and it represents great value.

Lismore has plenty of accommodation available close to the venue.

We have an outstanding line-up of keynote speakers, travelling from as far away as Guatemala, Fiji, and Alice Springs. No speaker has requested or is being paid an honorarium.

Carol and I look forward to welcoming all District 9640 Rotarians to the Conference.

Working Bee at The Sanctuary Any member who wishes to help at this club community project this Saturday is asked to meet at Bunning’s, Q Centre, cnr Bermuda & Markeri Sts, Mermaid Waters no later than 8am.

Days for Girls Gold Coast Fundraiser

────

It's Saturday Night at the "Club A-Go-Go".

Three blokes and four birds are out on

the pull. The girls, chalk-faced, pale

lipped and lacquered to

perfection are desperate to look

like Twiggy or Dusty Springfield. The lads in their button-down collars and leather caps are all would-

be Beatles.
