BOWLEDOVER Newsletter of Aberfeldie Bowls Club Inc Established 1910 14 February 2018 Issue: 20 of Season 2017/18 Saturday Pennant Round 15 One by the skin of our teeth and one fighting loss. Aberfeldie 1, playing at Broadmeadows, just got over the line by a single shot after letting a 7 shot lead slip away across the concluding ends. Aberfeldie 2, playing at home against Clifton Park fought hard to win three rinks, but lose the game. Aberfeldie 1 defeated Broadmeadows 80-79 for 14 points. Rink results: Ian Ferretter, with Michael Bialczac, Harry Bayer & Murray Whiteway 29-14, built an early lead into a comprehensive win as the backbone for our overall result. Fred Sinclair, with Stuart O’Brien, Lynne Grogan & Sean Lee 22-21, after leading 12-0, then letting it slip, then regaining good lead and just holding on. Manny Flores, with, Carol Bayer, Sam Folino & Brian Holden 20-21, a 6 shot loss on the penultimate end could have resulted in an overall disaster. John Grogan, with Graham Leydin, Norm Draper & David Torkar 9-23, in the game early and then decimated the saving grace was to lose just 1 shot on the last end of the match!!!! Aberfeldie 2, at Home, lost 80 - 102 to Clifton Park. Rink results: Gabriele Forlani, with George Pater, John Mutch & Joan Chamberlain -26-25 in a tight win. Margaret Clark, with Mandy McOrmond, Noel Greig & John Mutch-26-24 in another tight rink win. Robin Stoddart, with Joe Scifo, Col Reed, & Ken Witham-20-18 another tight rink win. Joe Farsaci, with Eric Gunatilake, Carmen Ritter & Vicky Walker- 8-35 in a game where the scores were not a good indicator of the respective performances. Aberfeldie 1 has climbed to sixth position but, with two top of the ladder teams to play, still needs to win to ensure no relegation. Aberfeldie 2 continues to play for pride. Aberfeldie 2 had a dominant win over Darebin to destroy its final’s hopes – 55-23 for the full 14 points. Rink results: Gabriele Forlani, with John Mutch & Murray Whiteway – 23-16 after being challenged to within 3 shots after eighteen ends. Lynne Grogan, with Graham Leydin & Norm Draper – 32-7 on a rink that played out of its skin under a cool, calm, collected and inspiring Skip.

With two rounds remaining, and subject to results confirmations, Aberfeldie 2 sits two games clear on top of the ladder, with Aberfeldie 1 heading Hoppers Crossing by one solitary point in second position. Fourth position remains a contest between Moonee Ponds and Preston Reservoir – with Preston Reservoir to play Aberfeldie 1.

Night Pennant Round 10 – Aberfeldie defeated Craigieburn 30-20 for 15 points. Round 11 – tonight, 14 February V Clifton Park at Clifton Park Round 12 – Wednesday 21 February V Keilor at Keilor.

As we go to press, Aberfeldie sits on top of the ladder.

Aberfeldie All Stars Top end of the Final Points scores for 2018 were: Sam Folino – 15 points – a well deserved win to a Club gentleman. Robin Stoddart – 14 points – swapped & changed teams to gather any point he could. Michael Bialczac – 12 points – snuck under the radar with some very “lucky” team draws. Lynne Grogan – 12 points – the 3 point highway robber of last week. Manny Flores – 12 points – the 3 point victim of last week’s highway robbery.

Mayoral Tournament This year’s Mayoral Tournament is coming up:

22 March – Preliminary Rounds at Clifton Park

8 April – Finals at Maribyrnong Park Ian Ferretter will be arranging and co-ordinating our teams.

Bowlers Arm Coaching Clinic The Northern Gateway Bowls Region has organised a Coaching Clinic in the use of Bowlers Arms. The Clinic will be at Preston Reservoir Bowls Club on Sunday 25 February. Full details are on the Club Noticeboard.

Around the Club We have a few who are in the wars at present:

Club Secretary, Derek Jarvis, is on a long road to recovery after multiple surgeries – and with one still to come; Joe Engert has a multiple week recovery ahead of him after surgery; and Brian Moore is steadily recovering from his mild stroke.

A bowler turned up at his club to play, wearing one brown and one black bowls shoe. The club secretary drew the player’s attention to his irregular dress attire. The bowler was unperturbed, responding, "I've got another
