School Calendar Amendment

Recently, the Ministry of Education announced that, similar to the previous two years, an

additional professional day would be added to the school calendar for the 2018-19 school year.

This new day will provide educators with the opportunity to focus on the new curriculum which

continues to be implemented in our province.

As well, the Premier recently announced that the Family Day holiday will move to the third

Monday in February, effective 2019.

These two recent announcements affect the 2018-19 approved school calendar for our school

district. As a result, the Board must amend that calendar.

Please note the following:

• The proposed date for the new professional development day focused on Curriculum

Implementation is Monday, February 11, 2019.

• The Family Day holiday is Monday, February 18, 2019.

Amending the school calendar requires consultation with parents and educational partners. You

are invited to provide feedback on the proposed changes to the 2018-19 school calendar. All

feedback must be received by March 5, 2018.

A Great Read for Parents and Educators!

One of the world’s most influential educators, Robinson has had countless conversations with parents about the dilemmas they face. As a parent, what should you look for in your children’s education? How can you tell if their school is right for them and what can you do if it isn’t? In this important new book, he offers clear principles and practical advice on how to support your child through the K-12 education system, or outside it if you choose to homeschool or un-school. Dispelling many myths and tackling critical schooling options and controversies, You, Your Child, and School is a key book for parents to learn about the kind of education their children really need and what they can do to make sure they get it. ROSSLAND SUMMIT SCHOOL IS A PEANUT AND ALLERGY AWARE SCHOOL: FOODS CONTAINING TREE NUTS ARE NOT TO BE CONSUMED ON SCHOOL PROPERTY. Within our school community there are several students who have a potentially life-threatening allergy (anaphylaxis) to foods, predominantly to peanuts and tree nuts (eg. almond, cashew, hazelnut, pistachio).

In consultation with Interior Health, we feel the best way to reduce the risk of accidental exposure to these students is to respectfully ask for the co-operation of the parents/guardians within RSS to:

A: Not send peanut butter or products with peanuts or tree nuts listed in the ingredients.

B: Encourage your child to respect the severity of the situation, which in some cases is life- threatening.

C: PARENTS! If you decide to send in treats (birthdays etc.) you MUST notify your child’s teacher in advance!
