COLLEGIATE TRAINING + PRACTICE FACILITIES

RETURN ON DESIGN™APPROACHExperts at creating next level sports architecture, ROSSETTI founded Return on DesignTM as a strategic design approach to engage clients and their projects beyond the typical form and function conversation.

By understanding the investment and potential outcomes of each project, the RODTM model bridges the gap between market, financial feasibility studies and architectural design. It frees team owners, sponsors and investors alike from questioning the merits and cost/benefits of our design and program. Ever focused on experience and value, we customize every project to its market, target users, context and drivers to innovate at the core and from the start of each project.

DESIGNING EXPERIENCES. GENERATING VALUE.ROSSETTI creates highly motivational spaces that stir emotions and imprint memories by engaging audiences in unique experiences. We challenge ourselves to shape places that have never existed before and to infuse them with energy, excitment and activation.

Our emphasis on design strategies that amplify both experience and value positions us in the top-tier of sports and entertainment design firms worldwide. Our client testimonials speak to this, as does four decades of experience surpassing anticipated metrics of success and advancing our clients’ business models.

We’re architects with a global focus on sports + entertainment and a proud history of design in Detroit. Our mission is to design experiences that generate value, addressing the underlying business goals of our clients to reimagine what a venue can be.

Highly motivational and branded, our facilities feature effective program design to allow athletes to use their time efficiently. ROSSETTI works with our clients to develop sponsorship and donor opportunities, legacy features and additional community programming. BILL CROTHERS SCHOOL FOR ATHLETESMARKHAM, ONTARIO

“Thanks to ROSSETTI’s leading edge expertise in sports design, we were able to seamlessly integrate sports, education and wellness into a symbol of healthy living for the entire community.”MAREK ZADWADZKI | SENIOR PRINCIPAL | ZAS ARCHITECTS

This unique four-story facility addresses the needs of high performance athletes and students pursuing a healthy, active lifestyle. The students attending this school are supported by extensive athletic facilities that include three double gym-nasiums, varsity calibre training facilities, plyometrics and aerobic studios, coach-ing centre, and physiology labs Exterior facilities include an 8-lane synthetic sur-face track, artificial turf football soccer fields capable of hosting provincial calibre events within the 30-acre site. Not only was this facility designed with the health of the students in mind, but the quality of the environement as well, as it is certified LEED silver.

Bringham Young University worked with ROSSETTI to improve the Men’s and Women’s Basketball programs through the creation of a functional, efficient, and dedicated basketball facility. The design will allow BYU to distinguish themselves as a nationally relevent and competitive force. More than just a training, center, the new facility will be a place to nurture the student athlete’s pursuit of BYU’s athletic tradition and improve their academic performance. Most importantly, the new training facility will establish a true home for BYU athletes.

“ROSSETTI is refreshing to work with. Most architects tell you what you should do from a superior point of view. They aren’t like most architects. We were brought along as partners in the design.” CAROL ANDERSON | DIRECTOR OF PARKS AND RECREATION | CITY OF TROY

ROSSETTI repurposed this former high school to offer diverse, multi-generational community programming. Hundreds of classes, space for corporate meetings, community gatherings and senior center activities are all housed under this one roof. Separate entrances allow different groups to come and go, but connect with one common space.

BGSU had a tight budget of $36MM to create a new basketball-oriented multi-purpose facility. ROSSETTI was the only architect that rose to the challenge and created an iconic facility at the gateway to campus. We partnered with the client to stay on budget without sacrificing design. Comfortable and activated hospitality areas, such as clubs, lounges and concourses, create a lively environment to enhance social connectivity. Donor contributions were programmed into the facility creating special opportunities for a Hall of Fame and practice court. The facility is certified LEED Gold.

“It’s everything we wanted: a sense of identity, a feeling of action, to be loud + boisterous. ROSSETTI did it in first-class fashion.”JIM ELSASSER | ASSOCIATE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR | BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY

“ROSSETTI was an ‘all-in’ partner in helping us bring our vision to reality. The entire staff brought so much talent and energy to the project. We are grateful that they not only donated the design services but care about our mission.” JESSICA HAUSER | EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR | DOWNTOWN YOUTH BOXING GYM

The Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program aims to create a safe and productive space for Detroit kids from the toughest neighborhoods. ROSSETTI offered design services pro bono to repurpose a 30,000 sf book binding plant into a functional and inspiring community asset. Aligning with the organization’s mission, the facility functions first and foremost as an academic and civic structure, with athletics as a secondary component. Located on Detroit’s East side, it provides a safe and engaging community space for students and their families.

ROSSETTI’s master plan created a dedicated training facility for student athletes as an expansion of the Ryder Center. The new attached field house features a 300-meter indoor track with a synthetic infield for baseball, softball, football and soccer practice. The year after the facility was completed, SVSU Football signed every realistic prospect they were interested in recruiting. Additionally, the new surface of the track has led to four Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) records at the 2015 Championship and set one NCAA record.

“ROSSETTI was a true partner in helping us reimagine our sports campus. The outstanding facilities provide a foundation for the success of our student athletes + accommodate the fitness needs of the entire SVSU community.”JAMES MULADORE | EXECUTIVE VP ADMINISTRATION + BUSINESS AFFAIRS | SAGINAW VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY

The Hynes Athletic Center was outdated and in need of improvements and updated amenities for student athletes. The design goals for the new facility are to integrate individual user experiences into a cohesive whole while elevating the College’s recruitment program and enhancing the lifestyle of the student athlete. ROSSETTI’s design will include a Hall of Excellence, addition of a practice court and an arena expansion. The design will be executed in three phases to meet the college’s funding objectives.

“This is the most pragmatic yet visionary solution that we have seen to date.” DR JOSEPH E. NYRE | PRESIDENT | IONA COLLEGE

COSTA MESA | CALIFORNIAORANGE COAST COLLEGE FITNESS COMPLEX

“ROSSETTI is to be commended for their creative design + problem solving that lent so much to the success of our project.” BARBARA BOND | ATHLETIC DIRECTOR | ORANGE COAST COLLEGE

Orange Coast College’s goal was to develop a contemporary fitness facility to serve the needs of students and the community. Conveniently located in the heart of campus, the facility is open, light-filled and sustainable. The building features state-of-the-art training and fitness spaces and anchors the adjacent football field. Part of the collegiate project also includes a new softball field, renovation of the baseball field, and a renovated ticket center. Lounge spaces encourage socializing and student meetings.

“This new facility is a beautiful addition to our campus + will not only serve generations of Notre Dame students, student athletics + the thousands involved in local + regional hockey, but will serve as a new architectural icon on the most public edge of our campus.” DOUG MARSH | ASSOC. VP FOR FACILITIES DESIGN + OPERATIONS | UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME

This arena sits prominently at the entry of the University of Notre Dame’s athletic campus. The new home for the Fighting Irish hockey program features collegiate and community ice surfaces connected by a wide concourse that allows views between the two. Premium products and the O’Brien Irish Pub create a celebratory environment for each event. Athletes enjoy the large training room, shooting gallery and locker rooms. The facility is certified LEED Silver.

After a number of studies, conceptual design workshops, and a lower bowl seating renovation, ROSSETTI was hired to complete facility upgrades of the Breslin Center concourse and concessions, as well as the design of a new addition. The addition will create an iconic space, connecting to the main concourse and housing a full-service club, Hall of History, retail store and new ticket office.

ROSSETTI completely transformed this arena in several distinct phases. By removing the decades-old coverings on the original arched window openings, the arena went from a dark hockey barn to a bright, modern arena while retaining its historic feel. The renovation also included a dramatic face lift to the concourse and premium amenities. ROSSETTI renovated and repurposed 16 Champions Boxes from former offices as well as the arena’s East Club. The unique “Ice Box” is a corner platform used for corporate entertaining or sold with four tops.

“We have the best atmosphere in all of collegiate hockey. With these new seats + improvements, I believe it can even be more exciting.” RED BERENSON| HEAD HOCKEY COACH | UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

“A facility like this allows the community to become stronger. It’s a dream come true.” HENRY MITTELSTAEDT | CHAIR | NORTH OAKLAND YMCA

This facility is designed to augment other Oakland County YMCA facilities, and better serve community needs. The commitment to mind, body and spirit is captured by the symbolic “Y” at the center of the buildings expansive glass entrance. Inside, the YMCA philosophy of health and wellness unfolds through a series of inspirational, calm spaces. This building was the first in the state to use a Terra Cotta rain screen – a progressive approach to using sustainable materials to help the building breathe.

MIAMI | FLORIDAFLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIV. R. KIRK LANDON FIELDHOUSE

As part of an aggressive plan to elevate Florida International University’s varsity athletics, ROSSETTI developed a master plan and conducted a comparative facilities analysis to expand and renovate the existing stadium and training facilities. The new football headquarters of the Golden Panthers is located adjacent to the stadium. The 50,000sf field house serves as an excellent recruitment tool highlighting a comprehensive training facility, Hall of Fame and state-of-the-art locker rooms. Administrative offices open onto an outdoor deck that is used for recruiting and game-day suites.

This multi-use arena is host to University convocations, men’s and women’s NCAA basketball, collegiate volleyball and concerts. The facility’s main attraction is the extensive two-story glass-walled main lobby that encourages social interactions before and after events. The facility was carefully integrated into the athletic campus and is located adjacent to the football field in order to expand the training facility access.

“What struck me about ROSSETTI is that they were listening rather than talking. They understood our goals for the Convocation Center + its relationship to the rest of the campus.” TIM WEISNER | FORMER ATHLETIC DIRECTOR | EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY

YPSILANTI | MICHIGANEASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY CONVOCATION CENTER

The design followed a generous gift by Alumnus Terry Rhodes to support an endowment for the women’s tennis program. Direct access to each court is provided via a center walkway between the courts. The spectator grandstands and concourse are placed inside of the courts rather than outside them. This design creates four feature courts rather than the traditional two end-court design. Fans are never more than 60 feet from any of the six college match courts.

At ROSSETTI, we strive to understand our collegiate clients’ expectations of experience and transform that understanding into great design for students, athletes, donors and staff. This is our proven formula for designing experiences and generating value.
