What is the

International Baccalaureate

Programme?

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a rigorous pre-university course of studies, meets the needs of highly motivated secondary school students. Designed as a comprehensive

curriculum that allows its graduates to fulfil requirements of various national education systems, the

model is based on the pattern of no single country but incorporates the best elements of The IB Diploma curriculum is about building well-roundedness with six academic areas studied exposing students to balance within the two great traditions of learning i.e. the humanities and the sciences,

well as asking students to develop themselves inside and outside of the classroom through the three areas.

becomes familiar with laboratory procedures. While

overall balance is maintained, flexibility in choosing

higher level concentrations allows the student to

pursue areas of interest and to meet special

requirements for university .

This course accompanies and must be concurrently with

English 30-1 IB in grade 12. Students are required to write a formal essay

of 1,200-1,500 words, which develops a particular line of inquiry of their

own choice in connection with a literary text or work previously studied in

the two years of this IB program. The HL Essay offers students an

opportunity to develop as independent, critical and creative readers,

thinkers and writers by means of a process of planning, drafting and re-

drafting. The essay requires students to construct a focused, analytical

argument, examining the work from a broad, literary perspective. It also

requires them to adhere to the formal framework of the academic essay,

using citations and references. Students will also complete the recordings of

their Individual Oral with their IB teacher in English Lit 35. This oral

recording has the student prepare one works in translation text and one

written in the English language as they bot pertain to a global issue present

in both texts. The global issue is chosen by the student in consultation with

their IB English teacher.

Recommended: for Language ab initio is a language acquisition course designed for students with no prior experience of the target language, or for those students with very limited previous exposure. In the language ab initio course, students develop the ability to communicate in the target language through the study of language, themes, and texts. In doing so, they also develop conceptual understandings of how language works. Communication is evidenced through receptive, productive, and interactive skills across a range of contexts and purposes that are appropriate to the level of the course.

If you are in a Spanish 6y program (starting in grade 7) you would then not enroll in Spanish 10 IB. Instead, take Spanish 20 IB in your grade 11 year and Spanish 30 IB in grade 12.

More Information Regarding Spanish and Language ab initio

Prescribed themes: • identities • experiences • human ingenuity • social organization • sharing the planet. These themes allow students to compare the target language and culture(s) to other languages and cultures with which they are familiar. The themes also provide opportunities for students to make connections to other disciplinary areas in the DP.

Prescribed topics: A structured learning environment is crucial for the success of beginning

language learners; the language ab initio syllabus prescribes four topics for

each of the five prescribed themes. The following prescribed topics will be

covered throughout the course series in combination with the Alberta

Spanish Language and Culture Curriculum 3Y program. These topics will be

explored in that relate to the themes in the b Initio language program:

What does the International Baccalaureate Programme offer?

It is a direct path to university and is the best possible preparation that one can receive to develop the necessary to achieve success there. IB is an enriched academic program gives students more opportunities to develop critical thinking skills than any other honors program. IB students say that they value the dynamic classroom environment, individual instruction, curriculum, dedicated teachers, and opportunity to develop

Approaches to Teaching and Learning As a part of the IB Programme, students will be instructed using the ATL Framework (Approaches to Teaching and Learning) as set out by International Baccalaureate.

ATL are deliberate strategies, skills and attitudes that permeate the IB teaching and learning environment. ATL supports the IB belief that a large influence on a student’s education is not only what you learn but also how you learn.

IB Approaches to Learning skills: 1. Thinking skills 2. Communications skills 3. Social skills 4. Self-management skills 5. Research skills

IB Approaches to Teaching skills: 1. based on inquiry 2. focused on conceptual understanding 3. developed in local and global contexts 4. focused on effective teamwork and collaboration 5. differentiated to meet the needs of all learners 6. informed by formative and summative assessment

What makes Ross Sheppard IB special?

Ross Sheppard has been graduating IB students since 1986.

At Ross Sheppard we believe that most IB students are capable of pursuing a full IB Diploma and encourage them to do so. We help prepare all future IB students by encouraging 10 students to follow the Ross Sheppard pre-IB Diploma Programme which actively enhances the skill set required be successful when students join IB in Grade 11. Although IB Diploma students are most highly pursued universities, IB Certificate students can still gain advanced placement and transfer credit at most universities individual disciplines. Our students can make an informed choice about what is the correct path for to follow and can choose a full IB Diploma or partial IB Certificate

We actively monitor student progress to ensure that students experience success and get help when they need it.

We annually organize IB field trips that help students gain a greater appreciation for the languages, culture, arts, architecture, history, and perspectives of the international communities that we visit.

Evaluation Students are awarded Alberta Education marks for their achievement in IB courses during the programme.

In Grade 12, students write their IB examinations and their Alberta Diploma examinations. Most universities will accept the higher of these two grades to meet admission requirements. Many universities will offer at least conditional admission on the basis of teacher generated IB predicted grades.

IB grades are based on teacher and student-generated internal assessment as well as externally assessed IB examinations. This gives a better reflection of a student’s abilities than an examination only approach to assessment.

Students in IB Math write the Mathematics 30-1 (IB Math SL) Alberta Diploma exam in Grade 11.

Each IB course is marked on a 7 point scale (all full Diploma students take 6 of these classes to earn up to 42 points). There are also 3 bonus points available for the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge course which produce a mark out of 45 points. To earn an IB Diploma, students must score at least 24 points out of a possible 45.
