Message from the Principal Dear Parents/Guardians,

It has been a great start to the 2017-18 school year. We hope that you

have found the communication between school and home to be helpful and

supportive. While communication with parents and students about achievement of

curriculum expectations should be continuous throughout the year, there are three

formal reporting periods for all students:

1) Grade SK-3 Progress Report Card: November 22.

Interviews will be held the evening of Nov. 23 and the morning of Nov. 24.

A letter regarding the scheduling of interviews will be sent home on November 7th.

*Grade JK Parent Observation visits are taking place during the end of

October/beginning of November. Parents receive a communication of learning

report November 22.

2) Elementary Provincial Report Card Term 1: Week of February 12, 2018

3) Elementary Provincial Report Card Term 2: Week of June 25, 2018

PROGRESS REPORT CARD:

The Elementary Progress Report Card will support teachers in using assessment “for

learning” and “as learning” in the first 4-6 weeks of the school year. The primary

purpose of assessment is to improve student learning. The Progress Report will

show a student’s development of the learning skills and work habits as well as

general progress in working toward the achievement of the curriculum expectations

in all subjects.

Learning Skills and Work Habits: The first page of the Progress Report highlights

the following six skills that are consistent from grade 1 – 12: Responsibility,

Organization, Independent Work, Collaboration, Initiative, Self-Regulation

Learning skills and work habits are assessed on this scale: E = Excellent G = Good

S = Satisfactory N = Needs Improvement

Achievement of Curriculum Expectations for Each Subject: The second page of the

Progress Report informs parents/guardians of the progress students are making in

each subject area. Teachers will indicate progress by checking one of the following:

__Progressing With Difficulty __Progressing Well __Progressing Very Well

PROVINCIAL REPORT CARD: Student achievement of curriculum expectations as

well as development of learning skills and work habits will be reported using the

Provincial Report Card in February and in June.

A strong partnership between home and school provides a foundation for

student success. Families who are involved in their child’s education and provide

support in the form of regular routines, supervision of academic and social

activities, structures to support students in work-completion and meeting

deadlines, and strategies to self-regulate, are instrumental in enhancing successful

FOOD DRIVE

Our Greater Good Club is underway.

A few grade three students have taken up the challenge. Our first initiative is a Food Drive for the month of November. Please bring in any non-perishable food items and drop them off in the box in your child’s classroom.

Thank-you for your support. The Positive School Climate Committee.

MILK BAGS UNLIMITED

We have collected 121 milk bags!!! Thank you for making this initiative a huge success and supporting those less

fortunate. Please continue to bring in your clean milk bags and let’s

try to collect 420 milk bags so that we can make a sleeping mat.

Thank you!

KINDERGARTEN TOYS

Our Kindergarten classes are always welcoming of any toy donations from our community. If you have any appropriate toys that are in good, safe condition, we

would welcome them into our program. Please speak to your classroom teacher or the office for more information.

EARTH RANGERS PERFORMANCE

We are very fortunate to have the wonderful performance of a group called Earth Ranger returning to our school on December 5. This is a show for grade JK to grade 3 and involves learning about different types of animals and their habitat. There is no cost to parents for this performance.

Halloween Fun

We would like to thank our School Council for preparing and operating a very successful Halloween Costume Picture Day! Our students and staff had a wonderful time getting their picture taken individually and with their class. The event helped raise funds for the School Council to support learning at our school and was a great way for students to show off their costumes and have a little fun!

We also would like to thank all staff members for organizing a fantastic Halloween Costume School Parade. All of our students just loved being able to walk throughout the school in their Halloween costume so everyone could see how great (and scary) they looked!

Zones of RegulationBelow is a poster that describes each of the Zones of Regulation. Each one of us will move through each of these zones at given times of the day. The key is to recognize which zone one is in, especially when interacting with others or working on a task, and identifying ways to regulate oneself in order to remain mainly in the optimal zone for learning and growth - the Green Zone. We encourage parents to also use these terms at home for consistency between home and school. Please visit the following site to learn more about the Zones. www.zonesofregulation.com

Halloween & Anaphylaxis This is traditionally one of the most dangerous times of the year for children who are anaphylactic. Many candies and treats, especially the small chocolate bars that the children receive during Trick or Treating contain peanuts and other nuts.

By all means allow your children to enjoy all their treats at home. However, we would ask all parents and students to be even more vigilant when selecting which treats to bring to school. This situation has to be taken seriously and the support of all parents and students to date has been phenomenal. It is also important that students don’t trade treats with each other. Your continued support of student safety is greatly appreciated.

Healthy Snacks Program

In an effort to promote healthy living, Ross Doan has partnered with Food for Learning and is offering a Healthy Snack program for our students in need. Every day at first recess we will make available snacks such as delicious apples, carrots, and granola bars for those students who may who are unable to bring a snack. Students who would like to make use of our program are identified by teachers and are able to come to the office for a healthy snack. We are happy and proud to help our students become as healthy as they can.

Remembrance Day Assembly

On Friday November 10th, an assembly will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the gym. Parents are welcome to attend. Please send a small

donation with your child to purchase a poppy. Thank you.

The Ode of RemembranceThey went with songs to the battle, they were young. Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

Lest we forget.

All students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 3 are expected to go out for every recess unless the principal decides that weather conditions are so poor that it would be detrimental for them to be outdoors. Students are to come to school ready for winter and prepared to be outdoors up to 40 minutes after lunch. We always monitor the weather and, in extreme conditions e.g. wind chill; we keep the students indoors or shorten the recess breaks.

Please make sure that your children are dressed properly for our invigorating winter days. It is advisable for students to bring extra pants and socks. A change is often necessary due to the wet and cold weather of the winter months. To avoid adding to our clothing collection in the Lost and Found, please be sure to label all articles of clothing. Boots, hats, mitts/gloves, scarves, and snow pants for the younger children will help make recess an enjoyable time.

We often receive requests from parents asking us to keep their children indoors during recess times because they are not feeling well. Unfortunately, we do not have the staff or facilities to supervise students who are sick or still recovering from an illness. Students with heavy colds, etc., which are serious enough to prevent them from participating in physical education, recesses or other outdoor activities, should remain at home until their condition improves. This will benefit the students concerned and prevent the spread of illness to others.

Exceptions are made on an individual basis for children who may need to remain indoors for an extended period of time because of a physical condition or recovery from a serious illness or accident. In such cases, a letter from the doctor is required.

To ensure the safety of students, school bus service may be cancelled due to inclement weather, extreme temperatures and/or poor road conditions. In these cases, parents and students should develop alternate care/transportation arrangements.Since some busing schedules begin by 7:00 a.m., cancellation decisions must be made by 6:00 a.m. to allow time to communicate this message to bus drivers. Cancellation decisions will only be made after thorough consultation with the Safety Officers of school bus companies servicing York Region and are based on several factors including precipitation, air temperature, road conditions and weather forecast. Please note the following;A decision to cancel school bus service will be region-wide meaning all school buses, vans and taxis will not operate. When bus service is cancelled all school tests and/or examinations will be cancelled and rescheduled.Student trips involving the use of school buses will also be cancelled.School bus routes may be cancelled when severe weather may not be affecting all municipalities in York Region. Both the YRDSB and YCDSB operate many regional educational programs. Students attending these programs are transported over large attendance areas encompassing several municipal boundaries. This limits the ability to cancel bus service using a municipality or zone methodology. Unless otherwise stated, schools will remain open and parents can make arrangements to transport their children to and from school even if school bus service is cancelled. If buses are cancelled in the morning, they will not operate in the afternoon. Therefore students transported to school by parents will require the same transportation home.Parents, students and school staff are asked to access the following radio and television stations after 6:00 a.m. to receive bus cancellation information:RADIO590 AM 640 AM 680 AM 860 AM 1010 AM 1050 AM 1540 AM 1580 AM 88.5 FM 89.9 FM 92.5 FM 93.1 FM 94.9 FM 95.9 FM 97.3 FM 98.1 FM 99.1 FM 99.9 FM101.1 FM 102.1 FM 104.5 FM 100.7 FM 105.9 107.1 FM

September – 2017 – pg 9MATH CORNER

You are a math teacher!

We all know that reading with a child helps literacy skills, and that playing sports in the backyard teaches the value of teamwork and being physically active. But where are the life lessons for mathematics?

The truth is that we all use mathematics many times each day, but often don’t realize it. From trips to the grocery store to swinging in a hammock, math is part of our daily lives. Don’t underestimate your own math skills. You can help your child learn math!“You are their idol. They look up to you. They don’t do a good job listening to you, but they do a fantastic job imitating you.” – Karl Subban, retired Toronto school principal and father of three NHL hockey players (P.K., Malcolm and Justin)

Math in everyday lifeIt is important to help children recognize that everyone uses math all the time. Here are tips to help your child have a positive attitude about mathematics.Make learning math a positive experience. Don’t talk negatively about math to your child—it can lead to “math anxiety” (a proven cause of low achievement).Schedule math homework at the same time in a quiet location every day. Be available during this period to talk with your child. Create a math homework toolkit with pencils, erasers, ruler, protractor, graph paper, counters (beads or beans) and a calculator.

When helping with homework, follow the method being taught. Don’t teach short cuts that could confuse your child. Do not say, “Let me show you my way – it’s simpler and faster.”

Be relaxed and positive. You are not expected to be an expert. You are there to encourage learning. If your child becomes frustrated, stop. Remind him of things that he has already learned how to do successfully, such as riding a bicycle, writing a paragraph or speaking a second language.

Ask your child’s teacher for strategies to use at home that reflect your child’s learning style. If your child asks for help and you do not know the answer, be honest and say, “I don’t know, but let’s figure it out together.” If you continue to be unsuccessful, you can also ask your child’s teacher for help. This gives your child permission to ask for help as well.
