This will be my last newsletter contribution so I would first like to wish you all the best for the upcoming exams and then whatever 2013 brings. I would especially like to thank you all for the wonderful memories over the past few years. My official last day is Dec 13th so I will still be around during exams and the subsequent assessment boards, graduation checks, O-Week planning and application processing so you can still expect emails from me!
For students in 1st year animal sc and veterinary science, remember that there are introductory lectures and information sessions for the 2nd year courses on the Friday of O-Week here at Roseworthy. We highly recom-mend you be here. For students moving into the DVM, there are also Orientation activities in O-Week, most likely the Thu & Fri.
The final timetable for 2013 will be released in early December so you can start working out your commitments. Summer Semester subject enrol-ments will also open in early December. If you do enrol in these courses, make sure you note the relevant withdrawal dates as they are very early (sometimes even before the course actually starts).

Hey All,
Next year the Bovine Appreciation Group - “Moo Crew” is coming back with vengeance!
However it is important for us to know how many people are interested in being a part of the group.
Over the summer a group of students will be working to get the club up and running. We would like to extend an invitation to anyone else who is interested in being a part of the planning and initial committee to email [email protected]. We encourage any Animal science, Ag science and Vet science students to express their interest in being involved by emailing [email protected]. We have a Facebook group and all people who register their interest will be added to the group so they are kept up to date with group’s progress over summer. We will be holding an AGM at the start of next year to decide on a formal committee and to give an outline of proposed events.
Remember that if you are interested in any clubs they all need help so please get involved.
Thanks
Moo Crew Committee

Veterinary students of the University of Adelaide Equine Special Interest Group organised their first ‘Hoof Care Workshop’ held at Roseworthy campus on Sunday 21st Oct. Over 20 veterinary and animal science students attended the day, presented by Ben Pollock Farrier Services from Echunga, along with board certified equine spe-cialist Dr Darien Feary, the newest addition to the University of Adelaide’s vet school teaching staff. Ben performed an anatomy and biomechanical wet-lab, uncovering the layers of the equine hoof in a very interactive, comprehensive and enter-taining session. This was followed by a clinical case of laminitis that was correctively shod by Ben’s farrier team. It was immediately obvious the horse showed an increase in comfort.
Discussions then centred on treatments and management of laminitis (inflammation in the hoof), a com-mon equine disease. Students were then able to utilise the theory they had acquired earlier in the day, and learnt the true meaning of ‘ Where the rubber meets the road’ by dressing and trimming the hooves of the teaching horses on campus. After much sweating and muscle fatigue, the participants came away with ap-preciable respect for the farrier profession! There were also discussions about the importance of forming a strong farrier-veterinarian working relationship as a critical component to the long-term welfare of horses within the community. The day gave students an opportunity to learn more about hoof care and gained
skills in horsemanship and fundamental podiatry principles that will be commonly utilised in the diagnosis of equine lameness when out in veterinary practice.
Major sponsors of the day included Ben Pollock Farrier Services, Mustad Australia farrier supplies, David Farmilo, farrier from Oakbank, Trevor Simmons, Kath Brice, An-thony Wilkes, Dr Darien Feary & Dr Belinda Noble, University of Adelaide Equine Vet-erinary Services. Without these generous sponsors donating their time, prizes and expertise, the day would not have been possible. The University of Adelaide Equine Special Interest group is planning to run another equine podiatry-based workshop in 2013.

Reminder about locker keys...
For those of you that have a key for one of the lockers in the change room areas
of the Vet Building….
If you are leaving Uni at the end of this year, you will need to return your key to
Rebecca in the front office of the Main Building at Roseworthy before the end of
exams. If you do not, you will receive a bill for $20 for payment for the key. Non-payment will result in a
NSI on your record and will prevent you from being able to graduate until the bill is paid.
For those of you returning next year, you can keep your key (unless you want a new locker – then, see
Rebecca in the front office).
e-Recycling 2012 The Office of Sustainability are holding an e-recycling event to
collect a range of electrical equipment that will then be properly
disposed of by E-Cycle Recovery.
What can be recycled?
Unwanted computer monitors, keyboards,
TVs, microwaves, CDs, printers, servers,
phones, radios, overhead projectors, fans
- the list goes on. The general rule is, if it has a cord or a battery it can be e-recycled!
How?
Step 1: Identify electrical items you no longer want and cannot reuse.
Step 2: Remove the ‘test tag’ and asset number and provide these de-
tails to your school manager.
Step 3 (Optional): Erase everything on your computer’s hard drive. E-
Cycle Recovery will physically destroy any memory device; however if
it the school’s preference to erase any memory on the electronic de-
vice it is possible to do so by contacting the ITS helpdesk.
Step 4: Bring these items to your closest e-recycling collection point.
Step 5: Enjoy the environmental buzz of knowing
your electrical items will be responsibly and ethically
recycled and WILL NOT end up in landfill!.
