ASB is a representative group of Muscatel Middle School students who communicate and interact with the student body to create and uphold a positive school environment by hosting activities, raising funds, enhancing school spirit, and contributing to a positive, student-centered school culture. ASB is in charge of coordinating the planning, action and evaluation of all student campus activities. AVID—Advancement Via Individual Determination
Year-Long Elective

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is designed to prepare self-determined students for college and career readiness. The AVID Elective class is designed to support students in school as the academic work becomes more rigorous. Students will learn organizational and study skills, develop critical thinking, learn to ask probing questions, receive academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities to make their college dreams a reality. Beginning Band (Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion)

The Beginning Band class is for the true beginner and is for the entire school year. Instruments taught in this class include: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, baritone horn, trombone, tuba and percussion. Instruments and music are provided free of charge and being part of the beginning band will be an experience you shall never forget.

The Beginning Guitar class is for students motivated to learn guitar from the beginning level to the advanced level. There is no cost to students or families for instruments, supplies, or music.
Beginning Strings (Violin, Viola and Cello)

The Beginning Strings class is also for beginning students who would like to play violin, viola or cello. Instruments and music are also provided free of charge and if you have ever been curious about how a string orchestra functions this is the class for you! Being part of an ensemble (group) and working together is important in building self-esteem and confidence.
Botany
Prerequisites: None
Plants are amazing! To truly appreciate their beauty and how ingenious they are, we will study why plants are important to all living things. You will learn how to paint with watercolors so you can capture their beauty. Examine their inside structure under a microscope to understand how they are built and explore their unique adaptations to different environments through hands-on projects and experiments. Let’s get your hands dirty and learn how to grow and care for your own plants. Botanists get ready to grow flowers, vegetables, and your very own fruit tree.
Create Your Own Masterpiece
Prerequisites: None
An elective to help build a blueprint for your life, through interpersonal, verbal and written communication activities. This class focuses on five areas of: self-awareness - goal setting/achieving, self-management - mindfulness/how to deal with stress and conflict, social awareness - improving communication with family, friends and others, relationship skills - communicate your feelings through active listening and empathy, and responsible decision making - making the best choices for the life you want to live.
Environmental Science
Prerequisites: None
Environmental Science is a quarter-long elective class in which students will get to investigate concepts related to environmental science through investigations and projects. Topics will include the earth’s ecosystems and biodiversity, global warming and climate change, as well as energy resources and recycling. The ultimate goal of this class is to make each and every student realize how to help make our planet more sustainable for future generations to come.
Intermediate/Advanced Band (Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion)

Prerequisites: Students who have had one year or more on a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument
The Intermediate/Advanced Band performs throughout the school year and participates in many events. All 6th grade students who have taken part in the after school music program are encouraged to join the Intermediate/Advanced Band. There is no cost to students or families for instruments, supplies, or music.
Money Management
Prerequisites: None
Money management/personal finance is a course designed to help students understand the impact of individual choices on occupational goals and future earning potential. Topics covered will include income, money management, spending and credit, as well as saving and investing. Students will design personal and household budgets, simulate use of checking and savings accounts, demonstrate knowledge of finance, debt, and credit management, and evaluate and understand insurance and taxes. This course will provide a foundational understanding for making informed personal financial decisions.
Music Appreciation (Guitar and Recorder)
Semester-Long Arts Elective (Visual Arts)

This class focuses on music history and music theory. Students enrolling in this course will also have the opportunity to learn to play the recorder and guitar. This class is for a beginning music student. There is no cost to students or families for instruments, supplies, or music.
Sports Academy
Prerequisites: None
Sports Academy is an elective class that introduces students to all kinds of team and individual sports. There is also a small nutrition component to the class. Students will hone their skills in a variety of sports that they have never been introduced to before. This class has a huge emphasis on having FUN! Some of the sports and games we will be playing are: Track and Field, Lacrosse, Badminton, Paddle Tennis, Softball, Football, Basketball, Street Hockey, Capture The Flag, Golf, Relays Students will be able to choose the sports they would like to improve on every week. We become a cohesive unit and we have a great time!
STEAM
Prerequisites: None
In this elective, students will participate in the Quest for Space program. They will wire breadboards, block code with Lego Mindstorm software, and build out experiments that will teach them about radiation, convection, conduction, and humidity.
Taekwondo (Martial Arts)

The Beginning Taekwondo course is a comprehensive introductory overview meant for students of all levels and physical ability. Aspects of health, self-defense, basic techniques (kicking blocks, and punches), Taekwondo's history and philosophy, and self-development are integrated into the curriculum to enhance the student experience beyond physical practice.
Theater Arts

Students have opportunity to express themselves while developing acting skills. Key elements of theatre are introduced by group drama games, monologues, memorized scene work, improvisation, and the technical world of the theater such as stage design, lighting and sound. Throughout the year, there will be opportunities to showcase student talents in performances in and out of the classroom.
Visual Arts

The visual arts course is for 7th and 8th grade students. The course teaches the fundamentals of visual arts through drawing, painting, sculpting, and other media. Students develop their own creative works while learning about the elements and principles of art and how to work with various mediums. Students learn about the connections between what they have learned and career opportunities in the arts.

This course examines the United States Constitution and focuses on specific aspects of the document, including the following topics: When, where, why, and how was the U.S. Constitution written? How have the protections found in the Bill of Rights (first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution) been developed and expanded? What is due process of law, and how does it shape and impact the lives of everyone in the United States, both young and old? How does a free press contribute to a democratic society in the United States? What are the roles and responsibilities of an individual living in a free and democratic society?
Yearbook

Every year exciting things happen at our school and the yearbook makes sure each event is remembered forever! Learn valuable skills such as photography, graphic design, sales, accounting, interviewing and much more. We are looking for students who are responsible, self-motivated, and not afraid to interact with others. The Leader in Me Student Lighthouse is a Homeroom course, not an elective, which meets five days per week. We support the Muscatel community in exploring the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and the 8th habit: Finding Your Voice. We create weekly LEAD lessons and Monthly Assemblies for Muscatel Students and Staff. We plan and host a Leadership Day where we highlight all of the ways Mustangs use the 7 Habits and demonstrate their leadership skills. ACADEMICS:
7th Grade English/Language Arts (ELA)
The 7th grade English Language Arts course will provide a balanced program that is developed for all students utilizing the four language arts skills essential for success in the 21st Century: listening, speaking, writing, and reading. Reading instruction will expose students to a variety of reading strategies for reading literary and expository texts. Writing instruction will include the development of written communication skills, including narrative, informative/explanatory, and argumentative writing. This course is aligned to Common Core Standards for 7th grade English/Language Arts.
8th Grade English/Language Arts (ELA)
8th Grade Language Arts promotes a rigorous curriculum and provides students with the training necessary to grow and enhance literature analysis, critical thinking, reading comprehension, language, writing, and speaking and listening skills to prepare to transition to high school. To be college and career ready writers, students will learn how to write arguments, informative text and narratives. Additionally, students will be able to use technology strategically when creating, refining, and collaborating in writing. By the end of the year, the students will have read short stories, drama, nonfiction, poetry, and novels.
7th Grade Math
In 7th Grade Math, students will cover the Common Core State Standards which seek to develop both students’ mathematical understanding and procedural skills, preparing them for college and real world situations. The following domains will be covered: proportional relationships, the number system, expressions and equations, geometry, and statistics and probability.
7th Grade Accelerated Math
In 7th Grade Accelerated Math, students will cover the 7th and 8th grade Common Core State Standards which seek to develop both students’ mathematical understanding and procedural skills, preparing them for college and real world situations. The following domains will be covered: proportional relationships, the number system, expressions and equations, functions, geometry, and statistics and probability.
8th Grade Math
The primary goal of this course is to introduce and help students master lessons in Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry. Topics covered are: numerical and algebraic expressions, polynomial expressions, equations, proportions, linear and quadratic functions, data analysis, geometric transformations, area, and volume. Learning this material will be needed to move on to the next math course, Integrated 1.
Integrated Math I (8th Grade)
Integrated Math I is the first course of a three-course sequence that satisfies the California Common Core Standards for Integrated Math I. Integrated Math I builds and strengthens students’ conceptual knowledge of functions, linear functions, equations, inequalities, sequences, basic exponential functions, systems of linear equations, systems of linear inequalities, one variable descriptive statistics, correlation and residuals, analyzing categorical data, mathematical modeling, and both coordinate and transformational geometries.
Physical Education
The 7th/8th grade physical education curriculum follows the California Standards for Physical Education for 7th and 8th grade. Our program encompasses a focus on the following: Cardio respiratory health and fitness, strength training, daily warm up and cool down, stretching for flexibility, yoga, ongoing nutrition lessons, a dance unit, and a variety of individual and team sports such as Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Street Hockey, Flag Football, Track and Field, Softball, Volleyball, and Ultimate Frisbee.

7th Grade science curriculum follows the Next Generation Science Standards, covering topics such as: What are the different types of living things on earth? How are they related? What makes living things alive? What do living things need in order to live? What makes up living things? How are we related to our parents? How old is the earth? How did life on earth begin?

8th Grade Science curriculum follows the Next Generation Science Standards, covering topics such as: Matter and its Interactions, Motion and Stability, Energy, Waves and Their Applications in Technologies for Information Transfer, Engineering, Technology, and Application of Science, Science and Engineering Practices, and Cross-Cutting Concepts.
7th Grade Social Science
The 7th grade Social Studies curriculum is the study of World History from the fall of the Roman Empire to the Age of Enlightenment. The class will cover historical events and developments across the globe.
8th Grade US History
8th grade Social Studies is the study of American History. The class begins with a brief overview of the world in the 1500s and then traces the founding and evolution of the United States of America through the early 20th century. Following the California Social Studies Standards, the class places an emphasis on the U.S. Constitution and writing across the curriculum.

You will learn how to paint with watercolors so you can capture their beauty. An elective to help build a blueprint for your life, through interpersonal, verbal and written communication activities. This class focuses on five areas of: self-awareness - goal setting/achieving, self-management - mindfulness/how to deal with stress and conflict, social awareness - improving communication with family, friends and others, relationship skills - communicate your feelings through active listening and empathy, and responsible decision making - making the best choices for the life you want to live.
Environmental Science

Environmental Science is a quarter-long elective class in which students will get to investigate concepts related to environmental science through investigations and projects. Topics will include the earth’s ecosystems and biodiversity, global warming and climate change, as well as energy resources and recycling. The ultimate goal of this class is to make each and every student realize how to help make our planet more sustainable for future generations to come.
Intermediate/Advanced Band (Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion)

The Intermediate/Advanced Band performs throughout the school year and participates in many events. All 6th grade students who have taken part in the after school music program are encouraged to join the Intermediate/Advanced Band. Money Management

Money management/personal finance is a course designed to help students understand the impact of individual choices on occupational goals and future earning potential. Topics covered will include income, money management, spending and credit, as well as saving and investing. Students will design personal and household budgets, simulate use of checking and savings accounts, demonstrate knowledge of finance, debt, and credit management, and evaluate and understand insurance and taxes. This course will provide a foundational understanding for making informed personal financial decisions.
Music Appreciation (Guitar and Recorder)

Sports Academy is an elective class that introduces students to all kinds of team and individual sports. There is also a small nutrition component to the class. Students will hone their skills in a variety of sports that they have never been introduced to before. This class has a huge emphasis on having FUN! Some of the sports and games we will be playing are: Track and Field, Lacrosse, Badminton, Paddle Tennis, Softball, Football, Basketball, Street Hockey, Capture The Flag, Golf, Relays Students will be able to choose the sports they would like to improve on every week. The 7th grade English Language Arts course will provide a balanced program that is developed for all students utilizing the four language arts skills essential for success in the 21st Century: listening, speaking, writing, and reading. Reading instruction will expose students to a variety of reading strategies for reading literary and expository texts. Writing instruction will include the development of written communication skills, including narrative, informative/explanatory, and argumentative writing. 8th Grade English/Language Arts (ELA)
8th Grade Language Arts promotes a rigorous curriculum and provides students with the training necessary to grow and enhance literature analysis, critical thinking, reading comprehension, language, writing, and speaking and listening skills to prepare to transition to high school. To be college and career ready writers, students will learn how to write arguments, informative text and narratives. Additionally, students will be able to use technology strategically when creating, refining, and collaborating in writing. Integrated Math I (8th Grade)
Integrated Math I is the first course of a three-course sequence that satisfies the California Common Core Standards for Integrated Math I.
