Healing Message

ROSE PARADE: JOURNEY OF HOPEPartner hospitals unite to spread message of life

New Year’s Day of 2014 will be a special memory for me. I was fortunate to join a delegation of organ and tissuerecipients and donor families from New Jersey who traveledto Pasadena to witness the 125th-annual Rose Parade.

I cheered and snapped photos along Colorado Boulevard, watching a color-drenched parade filled with brilliant floralfloats, spirited marching bands and high-stepping equestrianunits. But what truly made it memorable was the RoseParade Donate Life float, decorated in “floragraphs” of people who made the generous gift of organ and tissue

donation. It was the ideal platform for donor families, living donors and transplant recipients toinspire the world to save and heal those in need.

The float honored three New Jersey donors and celebrated the health of two New Jeresey transplant recipients, sending our message of hope and compassion to millions of viewers aroundthe world.

One poignant element this year was the rose dedication garden that made up part of the float.I was especially pleased that the CEO of every one of our hospital partners participated in a rosededication ceremony to send a message of support. I can’t begin to explain how critical it is for usto work closely with our hospital partners to effectively save more lives throughout the state.

This magazine includes a story about the people who flew cross-country to participate in theDonate Life float, and express their appreciation to living donors and the families of other donors.

And, as a follow-up to the cover story in the last issue, it is my pleasure to report DorotheaDuffy has received the kidney she has waited years for and already has big plans to participate inour annual 5K Walk and USATF Certified Race. Dorothea’s story is yet another reinforcement ofthe work we do at NJ Sharing Network, and how our community always comes together to providehealing and hope for those waiting for a second chance at life.

Looking into 2014, we have many exciting events in the works. We are making plans for DonateLife Month in April with the 54 hospitals in our service area. Donate Life Month activities includeNational Blue & Green Day, the Annual Volunteer Conference/5K Kickoff event, hospital flag rais-ings and MVC visits, all taking place in April.

In addition, we will very soon have our annual reunion of friends, donor families, recipients, volunteers and hospital partners at our 5K Walk and USATF Certified Race set for Sunday, June 8.

I am appreciative of the support NJ Sharing Network continues to receive. Even with our hardwork and successes, I am compelled to stay focused on the fact that nearly 5,000 people remain onthe transplant waiting list in New Jersey. As we focus on a new year, we are more dedicated thanever to make the waiting list a thing of the past.

You can help… Please look for more ways to encourage friends, family, colleagues, co-workersand others to become registered organ and tissue donors. Reach out to NJ Sharing Network as aresource; we are always looking for new venues to highlight our mission.

Thank you, once again, for all you do. My best wishes.

Since our last issue,Dorothea Duffy has receivedthe kidney she has waited

years for, pictured left.

As the warm weather finally approaches, we have muchto share in the pages of this issue of Circle of Life about thesuccesses of the past year and our ambitious plans for the future.

First, your generous contributions helped support ourinteractive exhibit on organ and tissue donation at LibertyScience Center. On one recent visit I overheard different setsof parents discussing the healing gifts of donation with theirchildren — exactly the type of conversations we want theexhibit to spark.

We began 2014 so proud of the strong New Jersey showing on the Donate Life Float at the RoseParade on New Year’s Day. You can read more about the float in our cover story, and please know thatyour support enabled us to be represented on the float. It was a wonderful way to bring our messageto tens of thousands of people on the parade route and millions more on national television.

We are already gearing up for our fourth-annual 5K Walk and USATF Certified Race. Last year, more than 8,000 people participated in the event, helping raise $760,000 and, more important, spreading the word of our life-saving mission.

This year, we have set an unprecedented 5K fundraising goal of $1 million. As in years past, our5K teams will represent donor families, recipients, volunteers, living donors, community groups, corporate and hospital partners, and other advocates whose lives have been impacted by donationor transplantation. I am excited for this year’s 5K and the opportunity to honor those who gave, celebrate those who received, give hope to those who continue to wait and remember the lives lostwhile waiting for the gift of life.

Let me close by introducing the newest member of our Foundation board, Cheryl Cohen, aChesterfield resident and health care industry professional. Cheryl’s brother’s life was extended eightyears because of the gift of a heart transplant. She was so moved by the passion she saw at NJ SharingNetwork that she knew she had to play a key role.

We are very pleased to have Cheryl on board and so thankful for the time, talent and supportyou all give to our mission to save lives in New Jersey through organ and tissue donation.

8 SPRING 2014

HopeKKatharine Lawrence says she will always

remember the bright sunshine and 70-degreebreezes as she rode on the Donate Life RoseParade Float on New Year’s Day.

“You could see people on the parade routelook at us, and then realize, ‘Oh, they’re all organ and tissue recipients!’ People keptcheering us on,” the Asbury resident recalled.“My arm got tired from waving, but I can't putinto words what I saw on people’s faces.”

Katharine, whose quality of life drasticallyimproved after a generous donor gave her thebone to allow for major back surgery, traveledto California to join 29 other organ, tissue andcornea recipients from around the nation who

rode the float, which traveled through Pasadenapast tens of thousands of spectators. She waspart of the strong New Jersey contingent participating in the parade, the culmination ofa series of local events to honor the generosityof donors and send messages of hope andremembrance.

Among the events were rose dedicationceremonies with the CEOs of every NJ SharingNetwork hospital partner.

“We are so proud to be the only OrganProcurement Organization in the nation tohave 100 percent of our hospital CEOs partici-pate in rose dedication ceremonies,” said JoeRoth, president and CEO of NJ Sharing

Network. “Our hospitals are critical to our life-saving efforts; we are grateful for their messagesof hope and healing.”

The 7,740 dedicated roses — each with amessage of hope and appreciation in an accompanying vial — created an inspiring dedication garden on the deck of the DonateLife Rose Parade Float. The dedicated rosescame from anyone wishing to share a message. Some honored donors; others rememberedthose who died waiting.

In preparation for the parade, Joe and othersfrom NJ Sharing Network traversed the state toparticipate in hospital CEO rose dedication ceremonies, including one in Princeton at the

New Jersey Hospital Association.

“Our hospital CEOs all support the life-saving mission of NJ Sharing Network, andknow that nearly 5,000 people in our state arewaiting for lifesaving organs,” said Elizabeth A.Ryan, president & CEO, New Jersey HospitalAssociation. “We were all proud to send messagesof hope and remembrance and support.”

In recent months, in preparation for NewYear’s Day, there were a series of emotional“floragraph” decorating ceremonies honoringthe legacy of donors and attracting media coverage from both television and print outlets. The “floragraphs” are artistic depictions ofdeceased donors created with seeds, spices andother natural materials. Eighty-one memorial“floragraphs” were displayed on the float.

The Donate Life float has become a tradition uniting the American transplant community. It promotes a single message oflove, hope and compassion. This year’s floatwhich took home the Theme Trophy, featuredfive enormous lanterns as part of a theme called“Light Up the World.” Recipients proudlywaved from the float, displaying “floragraphs”honoring deceased donors, while 12 living kidney donors proudly walked alongside.

Another tissue recipient on the float was Navy Corpsman Edward Bonfiglio, 28, of

Runnemede, now a student at Penn State.Edward was on a routine foot patrol inAfghanistan, on his third deployment, when hisunit was ambushed. He took a round to the sciatic nerve in his left leg and immediately lostall function and feeling below his knee.

Surgeons were able to allow Edward tokeep his leg by repairing the severed peripheralnerve with an AxoGen Avance Nerve Graft. Tissue donation is essential to the surgery.Edward now is able to walk and jog.

In addition to the New Jersey recipients, three “floragraphs” on the float honored peoplefrom the state.

One honored Mike Drozd, who gave thegift of tissue after he was killed in an auto-mobile accident in Bergen County in 2008.

“I am so thankful to NJ Sharing Networkfor sending me and giving me the opportunityto honor my beloved husband, Mike,” PamelaDrozd said. “Whether you were at an event likethe ‘floragraph’ family breakfast, or decoratingthe float, or at the parade, there was a sense ofcompassion and hope surrounding us.”

Also honored with a “floragraph” wasTodd Elliot Semon. Todd suffered a heart attackat the age of 38. After a cycle of illness and hospitalizations, he received a heart transplant

in 2000, which gave him 13 years of health. When he died at age 60, he returned the gift andbecame a tissue donor.

“In Pasadena, I met so many other donorfamilies,” said his wife, Diane. “They are trueheroes. My husband was very sick, but after thetransplant he was able to get back into life. Weare so grateful.”

Another “floragraph” honored Ena “Po-Po”Lue, who was 68 years old when a tractor-trailerhit the car she and her family traveled in on theirway home from the airport. After the accident, the decision to donate was left to her four children, who unanimously said yes.

Her daughter, Jackie Lue Raia, saw howher mother’s gift helped save the lives of threepeople and how her tissue healed 43 more. Butshe also recognized how the experience helpedher own family heal from the devastating loss.Jackie eventually joined the staff of NJ SharingNetwork to spread the mission of organ and tissue donation.

“Seeing my mother honored on theDonate Life Float was truly a life-changingexperience for me,” Jackie recalled. “To knowour mother’s legacy of generosity and compas-sion is inspiring others today keeps her alive inour hearts.”

A Singular Rose DedicationOn New Year’s morning, Dan Sarnowski arose at 6:00 a.m. and surfed the web until he

found a link to a live KTLA television interview about the Donate Life Rose Parade Float.

The television reporter was talking to Bryan Stewart, chairman of the float committee. He explained that each of the 7,740 roses on the float contained a special message of hopeand remembrance.

Dan, a member of the NJ Sharing Network Foundation Board, immediately remembered the message he wrote and submitted in honor of his life companion, Betsy Niles, a Montclair resident who became an organ donor in 2011. As Sarnowski watched,Stewart picked a random message to read.

What happened next still boggles Dan’s mind. He sat amazed as Stewart picked his message about Betsy as the single one to read: In Memory of Betsy Niles. She loved, gave, gifted. She gave strangers the gifts they needed: Another chanceat life. Betsy lives on in our memories and hearts; and in the lives of others who live on with her gift of life.

“I could not believe what I was hearing. I played the clip over and over several times,” Dan recalled. “I do believe it was a message from Betsythat all is well, and that she is so honored by the dedication rose and by the work we are all doing in organ donation in her memory.”

Day in the Life – Wendy Rothschild Wendy Rothschild

is proud that her HondaCivic logs about 46,000miles a year. From herhome in northwesternNew Jersey, Wendy is

regularly called to medical examiner offices and funeralhomes as far south as Camden.

The extensive travel is key to her 24/7 role as aFuneral Home and Medical Examiner Liaison for NJSharing Network. No two workdays are ever alike, asWendy is constantly meeting across the state withdozens of funeral directors and 14 county medicalexaminers, ensuring a smooth process for organ andtissue donation from Sussex to Camden counties.

“Yes, it sounds like I have a crazy job, but it is verysatisfying,” Wendy said. “Before I joined NJ Sharing Network four years ago, I spent 25 years as a medical

investigator. I worked closely with medical examiners, funeral directors and NJ Sharing Network. I have suchadmiration for all three groups. They are true publicservants, dealing with death and heartache with professionalism and compassion for families.”

Wendy is one of two liaisons to funeral homes andmedical examiners for NJ Sharing Network; she workswith Patrick Sheridan. One liaison is on call for an entireweek, while the other catches up on paperwork andother office responsibilities. Then, they switch.

Autopsies are required for all non-natural deaths, including trauma, suicide and homicide. Successfulorgan and tissue donation hinges on cooperation frommedical examiners, who must follow specific mandatedprocedures in ascertaining cause of death.

Wendy helps medical examiners complete a forensic investigation by securing X-rays, CT scans or

photographs. Or, she may be inviting a medical exam-iner to visit an O.R. to witness organ and tissue recovery.

“Organ and tissue donation is time sensitive; medical examiners and funeral directors need to movequickly and there is a lot of coordination required,” saidWendy, noting she spends her days working remotelyand driving from place to place. “Trust is an importantkey in the process, and I do what I can to make NJ Sharing Network a trusted resource.”

When the donor family has selected a funeralhome prior to the recovery, Wendy notifies the funeraldirector with the logistics of the recovery. She is alsosure to make follow-up phone calls within one week ofthe funeral to ensure a consistent process.

“I have passion and a tremendous amount ofrespect for my work, as well as the donor families andtheir generous, life-saving gifts,” she said.

WHO WE ARENJ Sharing Network is a non-profit, federally designated organ procurement organization responsible for the recovery of organs and tissue forthe nearly 5,000 New Jersey residents currently awaiting transplantation, and is part of the national recovery system, which is in place for themore than 120,000 people on waiting lists.
