PRACTICE 3: THE FAMILY REUNIONMy friend's I , the Rodriguez's I, had a big family reunion last summer. They hadn't been together since the late 1980's C (either way here), according to Carmen, and

there were many cousins C she hadn't seen since then and some new baby's I she'd never met before. "Aunt Flo C (either way here) and Uncle Silvio's C family

had really grown," C she said. Flo, who already had five kids of her own, had divorced and remarried and Flo's C and Silvio's C kids -- like a bunch of elves C -- filled a minivan and two taxis C . Fortunately, Flo and Silvio have PhD's C (either

way here) in psychology with good incomes to match. "We should've leased busses C for everyone," Carmen added.

They had their big dinner down at that place owned by Joe Pagani, Paganis I Ristorante, Illinois's C (or Illinois’) most popular and expensive restaurant. It was

jammed and familys I (families) kept arriving in bunch's I until some people ended up sitting on box's I and benches C . The waitresses C went crazy keeping up with

the order's I , especially with kids ordering from the childrens' I (children’s) menu. When it came time to pay the bill, they couldn't find Agnes's C (or Agnes’) purse, and she had collected all the money. They had a lot of laughes I (laughs) about

washing all those dish's I (dishes) until Uncle Antony found his baby girl, Eutrusca, curled up under his chair, sound asleep, using Agneses‘I (Agnes’) bag for a pillow. Eutrusca hadn't waited for her grandpas I long after-dinner speech to put her to

sleep.

How to register:

Students go to www.gotocollegefairs.com to register (both flyers have a “q” code that they can scan on a smart phone and register that way if you have limited or no computers). Registration is not required, but it can help facilitate conversations with representatives rather than spending a lot of time filling out information cards. They do not need to print the bar code—we will print them for Palmer students only and have them available that evening to pick up at that the fair.

An important theme in the story “American History” is that different races can understand each other. A quote from the story that proves this is “Eugene like me, but he was shy. I did most of the talking that day. He nodded and smiled a lot.” This quotes proves the theme by showing how, not only does Eugene, a white boy, like Elena, a Puerto Rican girl, but as Elena spoke to him, he showed understanding by nodding and smiling. Another quote that goes on to prove my theme of this story is “today was the day I was to visit Eugene in his house. He asked me to come over after school to study for an American History test with him.” This proves the theme by showing not only can Eugene invite Elena over as a friend, he also wanted to interact with her to study for a school test, sharing knowledge and understanding the material for their American History test.
