ROOM ATTENDANT

A Room Attendant performs duties inthe cleaning and serving of guestroomsaccording to hotel/resort standards underthe supervision of the ExecutiveHousekeeper.

TasksCleans bathtubs, toilets, sinks, walls,mirrors, tiles, counters and floor surfaces;Strips and makes beds and changesbed linens;Dusts all furnitures, pictures, drawers,window ledges and shelves thoroughly;Vacuums the entire room and emptiesthe trash bin;Replenishes amenities, linens andsupplies in guestrooms;Ensures all electronic devices and lightsare functioning properly;Transports dirty linens to the laundry;Adheres to proper lost and foundprocedures.

Basic Educational RequirementHigh school graduates, vocational

technology graduates or collegeundergraduates can qualify for the job ofa Room Attendant. Formal schooling hasto be supplemented by training in basichousekeeping, either in-house or by athird party.

Skills and CompetenciesEffective communication skills andability to work with a variety of people;Flexibility (able to perform a variety oftasks as instructed);Behavioral competencies in the area ofcustomer service relations.

Physical Attributes and CharacteristicsPhysically able to perform housekeeping tasks which require bending,lifting, carrying, standing for longperiods of time, and constantmovement;Good health (have no mental orphysical conditions that may beaggravated by the performance of theduties of this position);Personable and trustworthy.

Salary/CompensationEntry-level workers in the hotel and

restaurant industry receive an averagedaily basic pay equivalent to theminimum wage rate prevailing in theplace of employment.

Included in this salary scale areworkers in the accomodation sub-sectorwhich consist, among others, of RoomAttendants and other housekeeping staff.The basic pay excludes allowances,bonuses, commissions, overtime pay andbenefits in kind.

Prospects for Career AdvancementRoom Attendants can move into the

supervisory level if they have fulfilled therequirements for additional training andthe prescribed minimum years ofexperience. The requirements may varydepending on the standards prevailing inthe place of employment. A collegeeducation may at times be necessary toget a promotion.

Employment OpportunitiesEmployment opportunities for hotel

workers, including Room Attendants, arequite large considering that the tourismindustry has been identified as a prioritysector due to its potential to boost thecountry’s economy. Local vacancies willalso arise as a result of the movement oftrained workers into overseasemployment.

Cost of Education/ Training *A 2-year course leading to a degree

in Associate in Hotel and RestaurantManagement cost around P50,000 toP55,000

A Basic Housekeeping TrainingProgram would cost around P8,650.
