Smart use of space transforms a cramped galley into a stylish kitchen at two price levels.

ROOM TO BREATHE

THE PROBLEMS1. Limited counter space crammed prep work into an 18-inch-wide area between the sink and range. The homeowner had no room for a cookbook, so she propped it behind the faucet.

2. With only two 30-inch-wide cabinets and open shelving for food storage, the pantry system was cluttered and dysfunctional.

3. The galley layout made it hard to cook and entertain; guests stood against the wall or were shooed out during meal prep.

4. A single light fixture overhead and a fluorescent tube over the sink contributed to the dark and dated look of the space.

A custom-

built range hood, complete with mantel shelf, serves as the

kitchen’s focal point, where the homeowner

displays a few collectibles.

THE SOLuTIONS1. Classic white cabinets, Vermont Danby marble countertops, and a tumbled travertine backsplash with decorative accents give the space traditional appeal. Removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room unites the spaces to create a spacious eat-in kitchen.

2. A wall once outfitted with the refrigerator and two open shelves for food storage now houses the range and cabinetry to keep utensils, cookware, and dry goods both organized and out of sight.

3. Opting for a built-in refrigerator provided the opportunity to cover it with cabinet-matching panels for a clean, uninterrupted look on the sink wall.

4. Over the peninsula, a handblown-glass pendant provides task lighting and adds a modern design element to the traditional space. Its color also connects with the green tones in the decorative backsplash tile.

5. A classic fireclay farmhouse sink and a traditional bridge faucet turn a hardworking area into a charming vignette. Expanding the window over the sink floods the space with even more natural light.

Invest in a built-in refrigerator for a finished look that blends seamlessly with the cabinetry.
