UPSTAIRSATRONNIE’S

One of the advantages that we have overmany if not all jazz clubs is that we have tworooms to play with. And quite different onesat that. The look and feel of the top room ismore casual compared to the main club, smaller too. This variety gives us licence tobook it completely differently, which meanswe are able to satisfy more of the peoplewho want to come to hear jazz here. Jazzafter all, has no age barriers, certainly ouraudience spans several age groups. Upstairsat Ronnie’s, as it was always known, is ableto feature younger home grown players ona regular basis whilst in the main room wecontinue to book the more established jazzstars from around the world.

A change for the new year Upstairs at Ronnie’sis a now weekly Thursday residency beingtaken up by the W3 Jam Sessions, a rotatingposse of musicians who play the most excitingjazz funk jam in town. They have been monthlyfor a while now but we felt that a new weeklyslot would complement the long standingstraight ahead jazz jam we run onWednesdays (now ‘legendary’ if you believeAndy Davies who runs it). Both these nightsallow players to sit in (you’d better be prettygood!) attracting many music students fromthe great London colleges. Both nights arevibrant celebrations of live jazz at its best and Icould not recommend them more highly, especially to all of you giving jazz a fresh lookin the new year.

Otherwise have a look at the main showlistings and maybe come to the return of thegreat Mingus Big Band (Jan 25 to 30 ), pianistRamsey Lewis, guitar great Lee Ritenour orthe Ronnie’s debut booking for Nitin Sawhney.

Something for absolutely everyone. Happy New year.

MINGUS BIG BANDtrumpet: Tatum Greenblatt, Philip Harper, Alex Norris. saxophones: Abraham Burton,Wayne Escoffery, Mark Gross, Brandon Wright, Ronnie Cuber, trombones: Chris Bates,Luis Bonilla, Earl McIntrye. drums: Donald Edwards. bass: Boris Kozlov. piano: Theo Hill.

After the last three year’s acclaimed sold-out runs, which The Times noted was "The most exhilaratingnight of the year", we welcome the return to Ronnie’s of arguably the greatest big band of them all andprobably our favourite week at the club. Indeed there are few sounds in jazz as exciting as therambunctious, hard-swinging 14 piece Mingus Big Band. But then there have been few musicians andcomposers as dynamic and driven as the great, late Charles Mingus, who died in 1979. During his ownlifetime the great composer often struggled to keep a big band together and although his small grouprecordings are amongst the greatest in jazz it was always the voicings of the larger ensemble that Minguswrote for. This, then, is a unique chance to hear some of the most exciting music in jazz - heard how thecomposer wanted. Under the artistic direction of Sue Mingus, the Mingus Big Band appear at Ronnie’s fortwelve shows in six nights in what will be some of the Autumn’s hottest tickets. And with a huge repertoirethe band pride themselves on playing a different set every night – so no two shows are ever the same.

We caught up the great Mr Boris Kozlov (lead bass player of the Mingus Big Band for the last 18 years) as he took some time out of his busy schedule to answer a few of our Ronnie’s questions:

1. Boris, it’s a complete honour to host MBB back at Ronnie’s for it’s annual residency, considered by many people as our best week of the year! The band is always known to bring a fresh repertoire, what can we expect to hear from MBB in 2016? We'll try to combine true (Mingus) classics with stuff still being discovered and arranged by Sy or myself!

2. How does it feel to be the bass player leading this historic Mingus band and continuing the legacy of one of jazz music’s greatest ever bass players and composers ? Honestly, it feels natural (after 18 years!). A big point for me is that I can totally be myself within Mingus' reality, like all the other guys in the band - we value that freedom.

3. What is the importance of Mingus’ music ? Nobody else writes like this; it gives you a feeling of never knowing what comes next (i.e. real life)

4. To those who were never privileged to meet Charles Mingus, tell us what kind of man he was ? He was many different men, I gather, but he was I think a family man first.

5. That’s good to hear! Are there any modern day musicians (in any genre) that you consider to stand in comparison with Charles Mingus in terms of their charisma, musical ambition, depths of composition etc. In a word, nope! This is a different time (era) and different songs...

6. New York is the spiritual home of the band, do you still consider the Big Apple the creative hub of jazz music ? So far it still is, but the economy of it might change the scene one day and it will be elsewhere. It’ll be wherever musicians gather.
