Where do you think television is today? A: I am excited about it. The short, 12 and 13-episodes-a-season cable shows have really been great for the medium be- cause I think it challenges the more traditional net- work shows in exciting ways. I love the variety that you find on TV. Q: What is it about Parent- hood (Howard was behind the 1989 movie and the sitcom spin-off in 1990) that keeps you coming back? A: Well, we are intensely proud of the film Parent- hood. We would toy oc- casionally with trying to do a sequel. But we just felt another two hours (movie) on the subject was not go- ing to be particularly more informative. A series would allow the characters to develop. This was too good a thing not to pursue. Q: How did (Happy Days co-stars) Marion Ross and Tom Bosley and Andy Grif- fith contribute to your view of parenthood? A: Andy was an incredibly significant figure in my life, but I never confused him as a father figure. A great mentor, definitely. But, you know, when try- ing to figure out what Cheryl (wife) and I should do with our four kids, my thoughts would go to my own father and mother and Cheryl’s to hers.
