General Construction DetailsMovement joints should be put at buildingconstruction joint locations. Control joints shouldbe spaced at not more than 12 metre max. centresin either direction (15 metre centres where there isperimeter relief). Refer to "Joints" for details.

Specifiers should be aware of the likelihood offrame movement due to structural, thermal andseasoning effects on direct fixed plasterboardceilings. Where necessary specify a furred systemto minimise the risk of ceiling damage due tothese effects.

Caution:Boral Plasterboard ceiling systems are notdesigned to support the weight of maintenancepersonnel, additional plant or storage of goods.

Materials• 16mm or 13mm Boral Firestop Plasterboard

recessed edge.• Boral Plasterboard Jointing Compound (as

preferred from the Boral PlasterboardJointing Compound range).

• Boral Plasterboard Cornice 55mm, 75mm &90mm if required, applied using BoralPlasterboard Cornice Adhesive or CorniceAdhesive Mid Set.

• Perforated paper tape.• Approved fire-rated sealant for caulking gaps

at ceiling perimeters.• Boral Cornice Adhesive.• Screws and nails as specified.• Rivets (all steel).

Refer to Safety Data Sheets, available from BoralPlasterboard Sales Offices, or the containerlabelling, when handling relevant products.

All materials used in the construction of BoralPlasterboard ceiling systems must be carefullystored and protected on the construction site.Plasterboard is to be stacked flat and protectedfrom moisture. Boral Firestop Plasterboard mustnot be used where it will be exposed to excessivemoisture. In addition, damaged plasterboardsheets and accessory materials must not be used.

FastenersScrewsAll screws are to AS3566- 1988 corrosion class 1and are defined as follows:

• Type S is a double start, needle point, buglehead gypsum screw for fixing to steelgauges of up to 0.80mm BMT.

• Type D is a double start, drill point, buglehead gypsum screw for fixing to steelgauges from 0.80mm to 2.00mm BMT.

• Type W is a single start, needle point, buglehead gypsum screw for fixing to hardwoodand softwood framing. In some instancesdouble start screws are permissible (refer toBoral Plasterboard for details).

• Type L is a single start, needle point, buglehead gypsum screw for fixing plasterboardto plasterboard.

Note that correct screw length is critical whenfastening to resilient furring channel to avoidacoustic bridging.

NailsAlthough nail lengths specified are minimum, careshould be taken when using longer nails to avoidbending in hardwoods or popping of plasterboardwith unseasoned timber.

Non Fire-rated Ceiling Systems

IntroductionBoral Plasterboard Non Fire-Rated CeilingSystems provide a variety of applicationconfigurations using 1 layer of 10mm or 13mmBoral Plasterboard Standard Core or 10mm BoralUnispan fixed as a Suspended, Direct Fixed orFurred System.Note:

• These ceiling construction details are notsuitable for external ceilings.

• Thermal or acoustic insulation (max. 3kg/m2)may be placed above ceiling.

Early Fire Hazard PropertiesBoral Plasterboard Standard Core, tested for earlyfire hazard properties in accordance withAustralian Standard 1530.3 - 1982, recorded thefollowing results:Ignitability (0-20) -14; Smoke Developed (0-10) -2;Spread of Flame (0-10) -0; Heat Evolved (0-10) -1.

Component Mass• One layer of 10mm Boral Standard Core

Plasterboard has a mass of approximately6.5kg/m2;

• One layer of 13mm Boral Standard CorePlasterboard has a mass of approximately8.5kg/m2;

• One layer of 10mm Boral UnispanPlasterboard has a mass of approximately6.7kg/m2;

• Rondo Furring Channel Part No. 129 has amass of approximately 0.5kg/m;

• Rondo Top Cross Rail Part No. 128 has amass of approximately 0.7kg/m.

Systems MassThe following table shows mass calculationsbased on the above approximations:

DecorationThe ceiling system is flush jointed to provide asmooth, continuous surface ideal for all forms ofdecoration. Care must be taken to apply paint orother finishes strictly in accordance with theManufacturer’s instructions.

General Construction DetailsMovement joints should be put at buildingconstruction joint locations. Control joints shouldbe spaced at not more than 12 metre max. centresin either direction or 15 metre centres where thereis perimeter relief.

Where necessary specify a furred system tominimise the risk of ceiling damage due to framemovement caused by structural, thermal andseasoning effects.Caution:Boral Plasterboard ceiling systems are notdesigned to support the weight of maintenancepersonnel, additional plant or storage of goods.

Materials• 10mm or 13mm Boral Plasterboard Standard

Core or 10mm Boral Unispan.• Boral Plasterboard Jointing Compound (as

preferred from the Boral PlasterboardJointing Compound range).

• Boral Plasterboard Cornice 55mm, 75mm &90mm if required, applied using BoralPlasterboard Cornice Adhesive or CorniceAdhesive Mid Set.

• Boral Plasterboard Stud Adhesive.• Perforated paper tape.• An approved caulking compound for

caulking gaps at ceiling perimeters.• Screws and nails as specified.• Rivets (all steel).

Refer to Safety Data Sheets (available from BoralPlasterboard Sales Offices) or the containerlabelling, when handling relevant products.

All materials must be carefully stored andprotected on the construction site. Damagedplasterboard sheets and accessory materials mustnot be used. Plasterboard is to be stacked flat andprotected from moisture and must not be usedwhere it will be exposed to excessive moisture.

InstallationFurring channel and framing supports to be takento and provided within 50mm of ceiling perimeter- min 15mm end clearance to walls.

Suspension Systems• Attach suspension rods to suspension rod

brackets that are anchored to structuralframing or concrete soffit, at typically1200mm centres in each direction.Note: Each suspension rod bracket fasteningmust be capable of supporting a weight of143kg plus the self load of the system andpressure loads.

• Attach suspension clips to top cross rails,and fit suspension clips to rods. Adjust therails to a true and level plane.

• Position furring channels at 600mmmaximum centres (see note) and attach totop cross rails with a locking clip at eachintersection.

• Join lengths of furring channel with furringchannel joiners, ensuring the joins arestaggered.

• Extra suspension components must beprovided to support light fittings, bulkheadsand other fixtures. Spans and spacings maybe reduced if required.

Direct Clipped (Furred) SystemsPosition furring channels at 600mm maximumcentres (see note) and attach channels tostructural framing with direct fixing clips attypically 1200mm centres, or to concrete soffitwith anchor clips fastened to soffit at typically1200mm centres. Ensure that furring channels arefixed to a true and level plane. Longer spans maybe used - refer to Manufacturer's details.

Direct Fixed SystemsWhere fixing direct to timber or steel framingwithout furring channel, framework should notexceed 600mm spacing (see note). Spans andspacings may be reduced if required.

Plasterboard Application• Plasterboard may be fixed with nails, screws

or a combination of adhesive and fasteners.A combination of adhesive and fasteners isthe preferred method for general application.

• Fix Boral Plasterboard across the FurringChannel, Timber or Steel framing.

• Butt or end joints not formed on framingmembers should be back-blocked asdescribed under "Back-blocking".

• Tape and finish with preferred BoralPlasterboard jointing system.

Adhesive/ Fastener Fixing• Apply Boral Plasterboard Stud Adhesive to

framing members in daubs measuring25mm diameter by 15mm high.

• Space daubs of adhesive at 230mmmaximum centres.

• Keep daubs approximately 200mm awayfrom the edges of the sheets and the nail orscrew fixing points.

• Under slow-drying conditions, keep BoralPlasterboard sheets firm against theadhesive daubs for at least 48 hours. Usetemporary blocks fastened throughplasterboard to framing members.

• Be sure to fix Boral Plasterboard withinthirty minutes of applying adhesive. This willavoid skin forming on the adhesive.

For the number of nails or screws required, andtheir fixing points, refer to the following tablesand illustrations.

Fixing With Nails OnlyThis method normally applies where adhesivecannot be used - e.g., over existing linings or overa water vapour barrier.

• Keep Boral Plasterboard sheets in firmcontact with framing member while nails arebeing driven.

• Drive nail heads slightly below the surface ofthe sheet without puncturing the facelinerboard.

• Along the perimeter of sheets, space nails atbetween 10mm minimum and 16mmmaximum away from the edges and ends ofthe sheet.

• Skew-nailing is not permitted.

For single nailing, space nails at 200mmmaximum centres. For double nailing, space nailsat 300mm maximum centres with single nails orsingle screws at perimeter only.

Fixing With Screws OnlySpace screws at 300mm maximum centres in fieldof board and 200mm maximum centres on endjoints (staggered). Space screws at 10mm - 16mmfrom the edges and ends.

When screw-fixing single layers of BoralPlasterboard sheets:

• Hold plasterboard sheets firmly in placeagainst the framing members while drivingin the screws.

• Adjust screw gun correctly so as to drive thescrew heads below the surface of the sheetwithout puncturing the face linerboard.

• Press tip of screw firmly into the facelinerboard before driving it home.

• Always drive screws with the shank at rightangles to the face of the sheets.

• Wherever possible always start from thecentre of the sheet towards the outer edges.

• Position screws on adjacent edges oppositeeach other.

Back-blocking Ceilings Under Floors andLow-Pitched RoofsThis can be carried out from the floor below, onestep at a time as follows (see Figure 2):

• Fix the first Boral Plasterboard sheet.• Cut the next sheet.• Apply Boral Plasterboard Cornice Adhesive

to back-blocks and place them betweenframing members along the full length of thesheet already fixed.

• Immediately after all blocks are in place,install the next sheet.

• Continue as above across the entire ceilingarea.

• When complete, and the adhesive hasthoroughly set, apply the flush-jointing.

Back-blocking Butt JointsBack-block butt joints as follows (see Figure 3):

• Fix ceiling sheets with ends butted neatlytogether. The butt joint should fall within50mm of the mid-span point betweenframing members.

• Use battens and packers to support anddeflect the sheet ends upwards about 2mm.

Standard Ceilings Design

Back-blockingBack-blocking is a mandatory fixing requirementwhere specified in the Australian StandardAS/NZS 2589.1:1997.

Failure to provide back-blocking installed as perAS/NZS 2589.1:1997 may result in liability for anyassociated costs relating to maintenance and/orrectification caused by jointing defects.

Back-blocking substantially reduces call-backs, inparticular for cracking and peaking joints.

Recessed Joints in CeilingsAny area containing three or more recessed jointsmust be back-blocked as follows (see Figure 1):

• Cut back-blocking pieces from BoralPlasterboard sheet to sizes no less than200mm wide and in lengths that will fitloosely between the framing members.

• Prepare Boral Plasterboard Cornice Adhesivein a clean container with sufficient water tomake a stiff paste of smooth consistency.

• Apply adhesive over the full face of the back-blocking pieces using a notched spreader toform beads of 6mm x 6mm at approximately20mm centres and at right angles to thejoint.

• Fix Boral Plasterboard ceiling sheettransverse to framing members, placing theback-blocks centrally along the full length ofthe sheet's edge.

• Fix the next sheets immediately after theblocks are in place.

Back-blocks in ceilings may be cemented intoposition from within the roof cavity using a morefluid adhesive mix and pouring it onto the top ofthe ceiling join before seating the back-blocksonto the adhesive.

Page 43: Rondo Ceiling Systems

43

Non Fire-rated Ceiling Systems

Back-blocking Dos & Don'ts• Back-blocking must be installed at the fixing

stage.• Joints must not be set prior to back-

blocking.• Do not use plaster in its advanced setting

state or any dry mix compound for back-blocking. Dry or partly dry compoundscombined with ceiling temperatures maycause premature dry-out and reduced bond.

• Ensure back-blocking is completely dry priorto the taping process.

• Do not use stud adhesive for back-blocking.• Back-blocking strips should not be tight

between framing members.

1. Screw fix the mount via the central hole in therubber element. For fire-rated ceilings, a 25 mmdiameter x 2 mm steel washer is required underthe fastener head.

2. Use a suitable power tool with an appropriatehex driver and tighten the fastener to a pointwhere there is no compression of the rubberelement. Check the pull-out capacity of fastenerto ensure correct size is selected.

3. Clip furring channel into the Furring ChannelClip.

IntroductionThe QuietZone™ systems have been designed toreduce unwanted noise from specific areas of ahome. There are three QuietZone™ ceilingsystems designed to suit varying budgets anddesign considerations - these three systems areidentified as "Quiet", "Quieter" and "Quietest".

Building a QuietZone™ ceiling requires a littlemore care and attention to detail than standardsystems. Each component in a QuietZone™System must be securely fixed, necessary servicesstrategically placed and all plasterboard perimeteredges and openings adequately sealed.

Note: QuietZone™ is a registered trademark ofAmatek Limited trading as Insulation Solutions.

Boral Acoustic Ceiling MountThe Boral Acoustic Ceiling Mount is used in theQuietZone™ systems and provides a cost effectivesolution to impact sound insulation for ceilingsdirect fixed or suspended to either concretesoffits, timber floor joists, roof purlins and the like.

The Acoustic Ceiling Mount significantly reducestransmission of impact sound from manycommon sources including:

• footfalls;• rain; and• equipment

Other typical applications for the Boral AcousticCeiling Mount are in multi-residential apartmentconstruction, cinemas, and areas below a plantroom.

Advantages• Easy and quick to install;• Suspended application does not need

additional fixings;• Acoustic Ceiling Mount can be slid along the

top cross rail which allows for easy re-positioning;

• Minimises low frequency “thumps”generated from footfalls on timber floors;

• Fully tested;• Rubber Element is colour coded for easy

identification of load range; and• High load capacity minimises number of

Acoustic Ceiling Mounts required per squaremetre.

InstallationThe Boral Acoustic Ceiling Mount is designed foruse in Rondo's Key-Lock Ceiling SuspensionSystem. Refer to the Rondo catalogue for thespanning and spacing options for furring channelsand primary rails.

Direct Fix Application

Components• Furring Channel Clip;• Rubber Element; and• Screw (supplied by others):

- 14-10 x min. 65 mm Type 17 roof screwinto timber;

- 12 or 14 gauge x min. 45 mm drill pointroofing screw into light gauge steel; or

- “Tapcon” screw into concrete.

PerformanceThe Boral Acoustic Ceiling Mount has beenacoustically tested for airborne and impact soundinsulation in both the direct fix and the suspendedapplication. Acoustic ratings for the assemblydetails illustrated below are shown in thefollowing table.

Load RatingsFor both applications, the rubber element comesin a variety of load bearing capacities and iscolour coded accordingly. The appropriateelement must be used to support the weight ofplasterboard being used in the ceiling.

As each layer of plasterboard is fixed to thefurring channel, the rubber element will deflectunder the load. A maximum deflection of 5 mmwill result when the maximum load, as indicatedin the following table, is reached. Allowanceshould be made for deflection when setting outceiling heights.
