WANTZ HITS 250With the 60-38 win over Marquette Catholic on Saturday night, head coach Michael Wantz earned his 250th career victory. In 18 seasons at Roncalli, coach Wantz is the winningest coach in program history and has accounted for 45% of the program’s 556 wins over 51 seasons. He is one of only 29 active boys high school basketball coaches in Indiana with at least 250 wins and a winning percentage of at least 64% or higher.

COACH STRANGE RETURNSShortridge is coached by Jeff Strange, who spent eight seasons at Roncalli’s JV head coach from 2002 through 2010. Strange left Roncalli when he took over the varsity job at Irvington and spent eight seasons there. He is in his second season as the head coach at Shortridge.

LAST GAME RECAPThe Rebels increased their winning streak to four games with a 60-38 home victory over Marquette Catholic in the evening session of the All-Catholic Classic last Saturday. Roncalli led 13-11 after one quarter, before gapping the Blazers with a 16-5 advantage in the second quarter. The Rebels led by as much as 22 points (38-16) in the third quarter and took a 15-point lead (44-29) into the final quarter. In the fourth, the Rebels led by 22 at 55-33 and after five Blazer points, scored the game’s last five points to push the final margin back to 22. Michael Hegwood led all scorers with a career-high 16 points. Aidan Looney chipped in 10 points for his second-straight double-figure scoring game. Chuck McGinsie (nine points) and Carson Lyngh (seven points) each logged new career highs and sparked a Roncalli bench that combined for 20 points.

SCOUTING THE WARRIORSShortridge is 2-6 on the season and last took the floor with two games last Saturday in its hol-iday tournament. The Blue Devils graduated three of their top four scorers from last season’s 9-14 squad. Tonight’s game is the first meeting between the two programs since January 18, 1974. Shortridge won that game 84-60 at “The Woodshed.” The two programs played for three consecutive seasons (1972-1974) before discontinuing the annual series.

UP NEXTThe Rebels travel to Cathedral next Friday night to take on the Irish. Cathedral is off to a 6-2 start this season and plays at Avon tonight, before traveling to Marion tomorrow night. Roncalli has dropped its last two meetings with the Irish.

REBEL REWIND - JANUARY 3, 1986The Rebels topped Cardinal Ritter at “The Woodshed” 72-60. Ron Roembke led the Rebels with 20 points. Mark Kirkhoff and Pat Crosley combined for 15 points in the fourth quarter, as the Rebels outscored the Raiders 28-12 in the final quarter for the comeback victory.

Coach Wantz is in his 18th season leading the Rebels. He is the program’s leader in victories, games coached and winning percentage. He has directed the Rebels to all four of the program’s sectional titles, its only region-al title and its first conference title in 2018. Prior to coming to Roncalli in the fall of 2002, Wantz served as an assistant coach at the University of Indianapolis and Wilberforce (Oh.) University. Wantz is a native of Union City, In. and a graduate of Ball State University.
