Brief Updates

New FPS Inspector—Chris Henry Please welcome Officer Chris Henry with Federal Protective Services as officer in charge to Ronald Dellums Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse. Officer Henry comes to us after several years of distinguished duty with both the Contra Costa Sheriff's Department and City of Pittsburg Police Department. His military career includes the Army, the Army National Guard and Army Air Guard where he worked as a civil engineer/fiber optic technician. After leaving the Army and before becoming a Police Officer, he worked for Federal Express, and as a Journeyman Electrician and owned his own company (window blinds/custom cabinetry). In addition to all this, Officer Henry holds a BA in Criminal Justice.

Lunchstop to Offer New Exciting Lunch Menu

pleased to announce new operators! Over

the past few weeks you may have noticed

two new faces roaming the cafeteria

trying to learn your names, making snack

suggestions, or cooking up something

scrumptious in the kitchen.

John and Sinie (pronounced Cee-ni) Karas,

have been in the food and beverage

industry collectively for over 30 years.

John immigrated to the United States as a

teenager in the late ‘60s. He would later

become a star athlete at Willow Glen High

School and go on to attend San Jose State

University. Sinie, by chance, would meet

John while on vacation in the Bay Area

from Greece. Today, they have a 21 year

old daughter, Maria, set to graduate from

nearby University of San Francisco. Since the early ‘90s, the Karas’ experience and commitment to food service has spanned through three restaurants and now landed them their latest project here at Lunchstop. This husband and wife duo has done it all together: learning the ups-and-downs of the industry, coordinating wedding banquets, to taking it slow in their former bakery while concocting homemade aromatic pies. John and Sinie are both eager and proud to meet the dedicated employees representing the various agencies of the United States Federal Government. So please, stop by and say hello during your break and see what’s new at the Lunchstop! Who knows, they just might have some homemade baklava or pie waiting for you…

Implementing sustainability is a collaborative effort between GSA and our tenant agencies. Help us conserve energy, reduce water use and divert waste from landfills. Earth Day serves as an annual reminder of our collective impact on the environment. It also highlights our individual responsibility to help preserve the planet. Please join us in celebrating Earth Day every day. One way is through the Federal Green Challenge, a campaign designed to raise awareness and provide simple and actionable steps that will contribute to protecting the environment.

Federal Green Challenge Campaign GSA Region 9 is partnering with the EPA’s

Pacific southwest Region in a “Federal

Green Challenge” campaign designed to

challenge Feds to lead by example in

reducing the Federal Government’s

environmental impact. We are inviting other

federal agencies to participate in this

challenge by signing up to commit to

exclusively purchase and use 100 percent

recycled copy paper.

It’s easy. Simply go to epa.gov/fgc to sign

up. There you can set your baseline and

goals as well as learn helpful tips, share your

results and even be recognized for your

sustainability achievements. In 2013 alone,

the campaign resulted in 4,052 cases of 100

percent recycled paper being purchased by

Federal Agencies. This is the equivalent of

saving 377 tons of trees, 1.1 million gallons

of water, 1 billion BTUs of energy and

producing 75 less tons of solid waste.

You can get started today by purchasing 100

percent recycled paper from the Federal

Strategic Sourcing Initiative office supplies

contract holder at GSAAdvantage by

logging onto gsaadvantage.gov.

Tips For Reducing Paper Waste Paper can be expensive, but did you know

about its hidden costs? A single ream of

copy paper can cost you up to 31 times its

original price when you account for the

costs of storage, copying, printing, postage

and disposal; not to mention the

environmental costs related to its

production and distribution. Not to worry,

here are a few tips to help you reduce

paper waste and save you money:

Use the “Print Preview” feature to proofread documents rather than printing out numerous draft copies You can also save paper by fitting more on each page. Try reducing your margin or the font size. Many computer programs will let you change the defaults so that you don’t have to remember every time. Use electronic email and storage Email, circulate, or post documents instead of making a copy for everybody. Do you really

need a hard copy of that email? You save a significant amount of physical storage space if you file documents electronically. It also makes your files easier to organize and find at a moment’s notice. Print double-sided using an eco-friendly font First, print as few copies as possible. Always print two-sided or two pages per side. Some fashionable and toner efficient fonts include Arial, Calibri and Times New Roman. Recycle paper you use GSA provides sorting receptacles that allows you to separate recycling from items destined for the landfill. Implement a paper reduction program in your office The more people in your office that participate in paper reduction efforts, the greater the savings and benefit for the environment. Message from the Property Manager Parking Policy Reminder GSA would like to remind our tenant

agencies about the building’s garage

parking policy. All parking spots are

reserved and you should park exclusively

in your assigned parking spot. Please be

aware that parking spots are not

transferable without prior notice to the

GSA Management Office.

The garage is not open to the general

public. If you have someone in your agency

use your parking spot for the day, they

cannot use a parking space not assigned to

your agency. Violators of the garage

parking policy are subject to a citation and

their vehicles may be removed by the FPS. Refreshed Newsletter Format The building tenant newsletter has been

U.S. Coast Guard Sponsors Blood Drive

The American Red Cross and the U.S. Coast Guard invite you to make a life-saving difference by donating blood at the next scheduled blood drive on April 24th from 9 AM to 2 PM at the North Tower’s 5th Floor Conference Room H. Blood is a perishable product and supplies are always in demand. During the last blood drive, held February 20th, approximately 32 pints of blood were donated. This has the potential of saving 100 lives! Donating blood is safe, easy and convenient, with the entire process typically lasting about 45 minutes to an hour. Green Team Receives Recognition Cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead was famously quoted as saying “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Proving that adage true is the Chet Holifield Green Team in Laguna Niguel, California, who last year was presented a Public Service Award by the Greater Los Angeles Federal Executive Board (FEB) for its outstanding sustainability promotion efforts. Comprised of GSA, DHS Citizenship & Immigration Services, Internal Revenue Service and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees, the Green Team received recognition for embracing the true spirit of partnership and unification under the banner of government sustainability. Working together, they have helped raise awareness about sustainability in their building by hosting a Federal Green Challenge Kick-Off event where they established sustainability goals for paper consumption, energy use and recycling.

They published and distributed monthly bulletins to keep the tenant employees informed of the building’s progress. The team also designed and implemented a Green Program Collaboration Site that housed announcements, agency conservation policies, best practices, green contacts, conservation tips and a page that tracked employee usage of alternative fuel vehicles.

Since the group’s inception, the Chet

Holifield Federal Building has experienced

reductions in paper consumption (25%),

electricity consumption (12%), gas usage

(2.5%) and water usage (7.4%). Its recycling

program has also realized a 21% increase.
