Discover LeadershipA Message From Tracey Arnish

As I reflect on this year and our organization in general, I am filled with many thoughts and memories. It is my last year as Chair, and a good time to glance in the rearview mirror and reflect on all we’ve accomplished together.

As a Board member and mother of a cancer survivor, it has been a privilege to be a part of the RMH BC & Yukon story. I will never forget the months leading up to the opening of the new House on the grounds of BC Children’s Hospital. The team, the Board, and our capital campaign committee had worked so hard to raise the funds needed and set the organization up for the next level of service to families. Both from a

facility and capacity perspective, it was a monumental step forward.

I could imagine the relief families would experience when they walked through the door, and felt the people and spirit of the House lifting them up. I hoped they could find solace there, and comfort, and maybe even moments of levity despite the unthinkable circumstances. I hoped we would be a bright light, a part of the healing journey and a home away from home for all who needed us.

Today, even when we serve 73 families each and every night at the House and hundreds more at the Family Room in Surrey Memorial

Hospital, we find ourselves in a familiar place. Last year at the House, we turned away 500 families, almost 10 per week. That is too many, and we feel compelled to act once again and plan for growth in an effort to support every family who needs us.

Without our donors, volunteers and supporters, these plans would not be possible. From our weekly cookie bakers to our event sponsors and individual fundraisers, we are humbled by your continued commitment to this mission and your passion for helping families fight one of the biggest battles in life.

I am delighted that my term at RMH BC started with growth and growth continues. I am confident in the depth of our Board and my successor Patrick McGuinty’s leadership as we begin the next phase of expanding to better serve families. In the words of a mom who stayed at the House last year, “When you support Ronald McDonald House, you give us a home, you give us hope, happiness, love, and compassion. Without this place, what would we do?”

Uncover CourageMeet Grayson & Miranda Dowling

When Grayson Dowling was born at 27 weeks, he was small enough to fit in the palm of his mom Miranda’s hand. At just 1 pound 3 ounces, Grayson would spend the next year in the hospital fighting to grow and survive. Miranda spent 14 months in Vancouver by his side.

While she faced this terrifying situation far from her home in Penticton, staying at RMH BC helped Miranda feel less alone. Her older son Kaiden could visit with dad Jeff, and her own mom or grandma could stay and lend a helping hand. “You live in the the worst possible situation,” says Miranda. “Every parent’s nightmare, you live it every day. But here, you have somewhere to come back to, where you can just be a family.”

At the House, Miranda also made lifelong friendships with a group of moms who understood what she was going through.

At one year old, Grayson was able to go home to Penticton for the first time, but he returns to Vancouver every three months to see specialists and has been amazing doctors with his progress over the past five years.

His favourite spot in the House is the Magic Room, while Kaiden loves the games room and the slide. For the whole Dowling family, House programs provide “bright lights in the darkness” during stressful times.

And over the past five years, their RMH family has been with them every step of the way. Every trip to Vancouver is a reunion; as Miranda walks through the House, kids who have grown up alongside Grayson call her “auntie.”
