RONALD GEBALLE PAPERS GUIDE
Ronald Geballe was born in Redding, California, February 7, 1918, the son of Oscar and Alice (Glaser) Geballe. He lived and had his schooling in San Francisco until 1934. He then attended the University of California where he received the fol lowing degrees: B.S. (chemistry) in 1938, M.S. in 1940 and Ph.D. (physics) in 1943. Dr. Geballe worked during 1942-43 in the atomic bomb project at the University of California, Berkeley. Late in 1943 he accepted a position in the Applied Physics Laboratory of the University of Washington. In 1946 he joined the Physics Department as Assistant Professor. Dr. Geballe taught and did research in the Phy-sics Department as an Assistant Professor from 1946 to 1953; Associate Professor 1953-59 and Professor from 1959, He was made Acting Chairman of the Department in 1957. In 1959, he became Chairman and served in that capacity until 1973 when he was appointed Associate Dean of the Col-lege of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Geballe is married to the former Marjorie L. Cohn of San Francisco. The couple have eight children.
The Geballe papers were received, upon his retirement as Physics Depart-ment Chairman, intermixed with more than thirty years of the Physics De-partment records. Separation of the two collections was clear-cut in most areas, but hazy in a few; several ambiguous files were placed in the Geballe papers under the subject files in the subgroup: Washington. Uni-versity. Physics Department. The Geballe General Correspondence series is extensive, but the researcher should note that a great deal of corre-spondence can be found in the subject files of both the personal papers and the subgroups.
The chronological correspondence files of the Physics Department should also be consulted to document Dr. Geballe 1 s departmental business as Chair-man from 1959-1973. The researcher's attention is called to the SPEECHES AND WRITINGS series as they are extensive and frequent1y contain research notes which were the background for various scientific articles. The SUB-JECT FILES have value in that they exhibit a wide range of interests re-lating to academic life at the University of Washington; the files 2-27, 31, 32 and 38 have special value for the history of political and social occurrences at the University during the 1960 1 s. Most noteworthy, and comprising three-fourths of the collection, are subgroups - over 50 in number. In the case of several professional associations, the files as-sembled by Dr. Geballe document lengthy periods in the associations• in-ternal histories.
