President’s Report

UAW International President, Ron Gettelfinger and his wife Judy were welcomed home on October 1st. Region 3 sponsored their Annual Retiree Area 12 & 14 Picnic, which was held at Local 862’s Ron Gettelfinger Union Hall on Fern Valley Road. UAW International President, Ron Gettelfinger was the guest speaker! What a treat for the UAW retirees to see and hear President Gettelfinger. Many of the members that President Gettelfinger worked with on the line were there. They had the opportunity to reminisce with the “chassis line repairman from the Louisville Assembly Plant”. We thank President Gettelfinger for this visit and his speech, which was an inspiration focusing on the importance of our November 4th elections. Our UAW endorsed candidates are listed in this edition of the On Line. Please take the list to the polls with you on November 4th. There is no comparison for the candidates in these elections, it is an easy choice; more

of the same (jobs sent over seas, big bonuses for CEO’s, record gas prices, record deficits, more foreclosures, more Americans in poverty, continuation of the largest National Debt in U.S. history, Americans without affordable health care, and the list goes on!) or real change with tax cuts for working people (not just the wealthiest Americans), an affordable health care plan for all Americans, bringing jobs back to America, reducing the deficit, passing the Employee Free Choice Act, and other issues facing the American worker and their families today. Be sure to VOTE on November 4th. I thank everyone who has helped in all of the events and activities for the upcoming election. The phone banks, rally’s, neighborhood walks, building candidates campaign signs, and putting up the signs are greatly appreciated by the UAW endorsed candidates. It takes a lot of work and many volunteers for each campaign! I think everyone enjoyed this year’s Local 862 picnic, at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom, better than any in the past. It was a great day for all of our members and their families. By the time that you get this issue it will be Halloween, so have a fun and safe day. I thank the many volunteers that helped at the Louisville Zoo on Friday, October 10th passing out candy and soft drinks to the children at the “World’s Largest Halloween Party”! There are a lot of individuals setting up their own web sites. The only UAW Local 862 web site which is authorized by our International Union is www.uaw862.org. We have to be careful and accurate with the information that goes in our official web

site. This web site has been under construction and we are still going through growing pains. We appreciate your patience while we get our official web site up and running. I thank our On Line staff for taking on this assignment! Again, go vote on November 4th. Work safely, “lock-out”, and buy UAW/Ford products. Attend your union and CAP meetings. I can be reached at

the Chamberlain Lane Union Hall at 241-9491 or pager 621-7773.

LAP Chairman’s Report

I want to think everyone that voted to ratify our Local Agreement. It was passed by a margin of seventy five percent of the members. We have already started to work with the company to insure that the facility items are completed in a timely fashion. We are also working to implement the new language as quickly as possible. All current team leaders will complete their current one year term. The new two year term will be effective on the first election following the ratification. As soon as we receive copies from the printer we will distribute them to the membership. Our members have been working extremely hard to support our endorsed candidates. The election is coming in fast. Please make sure that you educate yourself on issues that directly affect you and get out and vote. The Expedition/Navigator retooling is still ongoing. Everything is on schedule and going well. We should be down December 15, 2008 through February 2, 2009 to complete this retooling. This is a significant sacrifice for our members during this time of year. Just remember that it is an investment in the future of our plant and will help strengthen our future. We are still in discussion regarding the possibility of Michigan Truck employees moving to KTP. At this time no decision has been made. Remember to make sure that all your information is up to date in both Labor Relations and Union Hall. This is the only way of insuring that you can be contacted. All of the TLO weeks have left many members feeling “out of the loop” in regards to information from the plant. The Local union has updated its web page www.uaw862.org to include all of my plant wide emails. It also has many important links so please take time to look it up. By the time this is published we should have a new plant manager. Joe Bobnar took over for Todd Bryant effective November 1, 2008. We are currently in talks to organize the Premier Company that has taken over the cleaning duties as described in the Master Agreement. LAP has already organized this group. As this year comes to a close on behalf of the committee and me I want to wish you and your family a Happy Holiday.

There is a new website for LAP employees and retirees. It’s uawlap.org. I had the site built to keep the membership informed of the latest developments concerning our plant and membership at the Louisville Assembly Plant. Please, be sure to register with your real name so that you can be added to our e-mail list and receive my reports as soon as they become available and before the news hits the media.

Congratulations to all the 75 individuals taking a buyout! The plant is losing some great talent. Forty of the retirees attended a plant recognition and breakfast on Thursday, October 16, 2008. Among the attendees were Lewis Sexton, Orville Griffin and Paul Trayner. Good Luck to all.

The breakfast was also attended by the new Plant Manager, Mark Boldin, who is coming to LAP from the St. Thomas, Canada Plant. Joe Bobnar is moving to the Kentucky Truck Plant as their Plant Manager.

Our production schedule is still full of down weeks. After working alternating schedules in November, the plant will probably be down the whole month of December and the first week of January as of this article. Hopefully, the lower gas prices can keep our production high enough to carry us until the new product is launched.

Currently, we have three (3) grievances in the 4th stage (umpire), 26 in the 3rd and 32 in the 2nd stages. All 2nd stage grievances in the procedure were written in 2008.

Rick Thomas will be temporarily on a 48 week assignment covering all the Material Handling Department, the Paint Box Build Area, and all the UAW represented members in the front offices. The remaining district committeepersons will continue to cover their current areas in the plant minus the aforementioned areas.

There is a new website for LAP employees and retirees. It’s uawlap.org

I want to think everyone that voted to ratify our Local Agreement.

UAW/FORD Legal Services / Avoiding Dual Taxation

Employer provided legal services are considered taxable income. This amount is reflected in your gross income each year as imputed income, which is the value of the benefit even though you do not actually receive the money. In certain cases, for example a husband and wife are both Ford employees, or an employee and/or retiree is also a surviving spouse, you may be charged two imputed income amounts. To avoid this dual taxation, one person may declare coverages for both parties. In order to do this and avoid dual taxation you may call 1-800-521-7818, ext.517.

Let them know you are calling regarding “Dual Taxation.” Have ready: both employees’ full names, social security numbers, location of employment, and local union numbers. If you have done this previously you do not need to repeat it.

Defining Humana PreferredHumana Preferred includes physicians with more efficient treatment patterns and improved outcomes compared to physicians in the same area with the same specialty.

Physicians are selected by examining claims across an entire episode of treatment. Providers are evaluated on their adherence to evidenced-based medicine guidelines to deliver effective and efficient health care. The goal is to improve the quality and cost outcomes of health care services.

If your provider is not in the Humana Preferred POS Open Access Network and has stated that they want additional information about what criteria was used or want to appeal their status in the network, please encourage the doctor to contact the Humana Provider Relations Department at 1-800-626-2741.

Retirement Is Great !!! When did I ever have time to go to work? These are the words I ask myself every day now that I am retired. It seems I am always on the go or doing a project, here or there, at home or at one of my boys houses. Each one of my three sons has bought houses in the last year or two, and each one has a project or two that needs some attention. We, (Kathy and I), also have our 1st grand baby, (Allison Nicole, prettiest baby ever), that keeps us busy for attentive needs, and lets us know if they are not met. We have also gone to Florida twice this year and we just got back from Myrtle Beach this past month. This Spring I went with my brother and brother-in-law to Canada for some fast action fishing. As you can see, (picture insert), the action was more than just a LITTLE fun. The trout, bass, walleye, and northern pike not only met our challenge, but also filled our bellies each day. Opps, got to go, someone just called me to play golf. See you all at the meetings.

2 We actually received a call last week from the 809 area code. The woman said ‘Hey, this is Karen. Sorry I missed you--get back to us quickly. I Have something important to tell you.’ Then she repeated a phone number beginning with 809. ‘We didn’t respond’.

Then this week, we received the following e-mail:

Subject: DON’T DIAL AREA CODE 809, 284 AND 876

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION PROVIDED TO US BY AT&T. DON’T DIAL AREA CODE 809

This one is being distributed all over the US . This is pretty scary, especially given the way they try to get you to call. Be sure you read this and pass it on.

They get you to call by telling you that it is information about a family member who has been ill or to tell you someone has-been arrested, died, or to let you know you have won a wonderful prize, etc. In each case, you are told to call the 809 number right away. Since there are so many new area codes these days, people unknowingly return these calls.

ABOUT AREA CODES

Here is a OnLine Heads UP !!

If you call from the US , you will apparently

be charged $2425 per-minute. Or, you’ll get a long recorded message. The point is, they will try to keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges. Unfortunately, when you get your

phone bill, you’ll often be charged more than $24,100.00

WHY IT WORKS: The 809 area code is located in an island in the Caribbean.

The charges afterwards can become a real nightmare. That’s because you did actually make the call. If you complain, both your local phone company and your long distance

carrier will not want to get involved and will most likely tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. You’ll end up dealing with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong.

Please forward this entire message to your friends, family and colleagues to help them

become aware of this scam!

Sandi Van Handel AT&T Field Service Manager (920) 687-904

Additional information on these area codes can be found from ATT at:

To All U.A.W. Ford Employees, Retirees, and Surviving

Spouses,

The Presidential election this November is without a

doubt the most important election in our lifetime. Our jobs,

health care benefits, retirement checks, and in fact our way of

life is in danger.

Under the Republican leadership we have lost hundreds

of thousands of manufacturing jobs, our country is bankrupt,

we are mired in a never ending war. Unemployment is high,

prices are out of control, and the rich keep getting richer

while the working men and women are paying the price. If

the Republicans win this election your job along with your

health care, retirement pension, and benefits will be in jeop-

ardy.

I am asking all UAW members to do what is right for you,

and your family, and all the working people in America and

vote for and support the candidates that our UAW leadership

has endorsed.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.

Shrinking Disposable Income by Al Kessinger

It’s the money that you have left over after you pay for your basic essentials that fuels the American economy. You know, that little bit of cash that you must have to go on vacations, dine out, buy the latest electronics, shop for clothes, buy a new car, renovate your homes, go to the movies or, better yet, fund your retirement accounts and your children’s college funds.

It was so nice to spend a recent weekend strolling through three hundred thousand or so people at the Saint James Court Art Show. The weather was perfect, the scenery was beautiful and the art was spectacular and expensive. This great Louisville tradition which dates to 1956 and regularly draws over 750 art dealers depends on shoppers armed with their disposable income. National retailers are depending on you to spend your disposable cash this coming Christmas season. It’s the same money we spend on sports attractions, dance lessons and attending Broadway shows. It’s the same money we spend at the beauty shops, barber shops and the bowling alleys. It’s the same money that we spend on golf, fishing, hunting, boating and skiing. It’s the same money we put in the church collection plate and donate to our charities.

Right now middle class Americans, like us, are coping with a shrinking wallet and bank account. What extras of life do you enjoy that you might have to give up or cut back on that are totally dependent on your disposable income? At the same time gasoline prices exploded past $3 to $4 per gallon and a gallon of milk went to $3.50 and above, American autoworkers had their rug pulled out from underneath them. We now find ourselves in the position of sporadic work and temporary layoffs and depending on unemployment checks and sub-pay.

The past two years or so has left those of us in the automotive industry reeling from bad news to good news and back to bad news and now relying on an uncertain future. We hope our employers have the foresight and vision to design, build and deliver automotive products that people will actually want to buy and be able to afford to drive. This has not been the practice of the automakers in the past. We hope Washington finds someone with enough economic sense to steer middle class workers out of this current malaise and into black ink once again. We hope that our jobs and our plants are safe for the foreseeable future and that we can once again plan our economic future.

Families having seen the prices for baby formula rise to $10 for a 32 oz. mix , diapers go to $12 for a 48 pack of Huggies , and cereal, beef products and school supplies all go much higher mostly due to the rise in transportation costs just do not have as much left over anymore. When that happens, businesses like movie theaters, hotels, restaurants, museums and amusement parks cut services and availability. Our economy will then spiral downward.

This country is like a chain link fence with cash being

the poles that hold the fence up. We are all tied to each other economically. What happens to you economically directly affects your neighbor who cuts hair for a living, drives a bus or works at the casino. American workers make this country operate and without middle class relief from somewhere this chain link fence is going to rust out and fall down.

Middle class Americans do have options at their disposal. They can become more savvy shoppers. They can become better bookkeepers of their money. They can work more and earn more. And most importantly they can VOTE! photos: Al Kessinger

Region 3 Chaplaincy Workshop“The Joy of Forgiveness”

by Phyllis Stewart

On Saturday, September 27, 2008 from noon-3:00 p.m. at the UAW Local 862 Chamberlain Union Hall the Second Annual Region 3 Chaplaincy Workshop was held. Several different locals attended. The food & materials were pro-vided by Local 862 LAP/KTP Joint Chaplaincy Committee. Each speaker spoke on several different topics and they received great reviews from the attendees. “The Chaplain’s mission is to support, give direction, protect the broken spirit & assist the membership in their time of need.” We opened in prayer. A short review of the agenda was given by Kim Jackson (Local 862). Our special guest speaker was Thelma Corbit (Local 292); she spoke on flexibility in Chaplaincy. Will Price (Local 685) spoke on Community Relations-Character & Integrity. Timothy Moss (Local 862) spoke on “Where Do We Go From Here?” which was about taking back what we’ve learned. Rodney Janes (862) spoke on Public Speaking/The Art of Delegat-ing, which was about being a good listener & organizing your time. James Wolfe (862) spoke on Funeral Arrange-ments/Bereavements and the Grief Process. Gustavo Piaggio (862) spoke on The Chaplain-Family Life, Work-place, & Community. Ray Montgomery (Local 862 Retiree Chaplain) spoke on Standing in the Midst of Adversity. Phyllis Stewart (862) spoke on Hidden Addictions-Problem Gambling. Closing remarks were given by Todd Dunn, Vice-President of Local 862. He shared that the Execu-tive Board of Local 862 stands behind us. What a blessing! Then we closed in prayer.

Why do we have & attend conferences & workshops? EDUCATE-EDUCATE-EDUCATE. The UAW Constitution of the International Union, Article 41, Section 2 states, “It shall be the duty of each member to render aid & assistance to brother or sister members in case of illness, death or distress & in every way equip her/himself as a loyal devoted member of the International Union.” Am I my brother’s keeper? As a Chaplaincy Committee we will equip, train & serve in all areas of life for the purpose of empowerment for a better life existence. We are to be like beacons on the hill & chaplains wearing many different hats. Our Mission Statement articulates the group’s purpose, both for those in the organization & for the public. We are not counselors we are consolers. Why do we have a Conference Center? To educate our members about unions. Walter Reuther, the founder of the Black Lake Conference Center, said the Bread Box & the Ballot Box go together. The history of unions were started & supported by churches! Did you know that God ordains government? Did you know that 40% of the nation does not vote & a percentage of them are registered and 20% out of the locals do not vote. There is one President, 100 Senators (two for each state), & 435 House of Representatives. There are 454 delegates who dictate your life and they do not pay into our social security system. They deposit fundsinto there own guaranteed pension plans & there spouses receive 50% survivorship benefits. If our government received the same benefits, how do you think they would react? Now what are we going to do about it? On November 4, 2008 please vote & support our union. Ron Gettelfinger, UAW International President, said to believe in who you are & stand up for what you believe. Thank you and God bless.

September 6, 2008, the UAW Local 862 Women’s Committee held the first annual Political Tea. The purpose of the tea is to educate, to build skill and confidence, provide leadership, inform, support the local union, encourage political activity and to network with other women’s organizations. In order to fulfill the purpose, women from all walks of life were invited to attend as well as women from the Derby City Coalition of Labor Union Women. Since this is the first year, the meeting was informative and welcomed by the attendees.

The discussion covered topics such as why women should be involved in the political process, how to gain knowledge about the issues vital to America’s Working families, where to look for the voting records of the candidates’ running for office, and how women can impact this year’s election by being an informed voter. Three guest speakers: Madonna Flood, Cylister Williams and Mary Briscoe, shared their stories during the meeting.

Councilwoman Madonna Flood, spoke about her personal experience of running for office. Flood covered the reasons she became involved in politics and her passion about the Okolona area. Her passion was catching. She encouraged all attendees to get involved one way or another, whether it involves working the polls, campaigning for a favorite candidate, signing postcards, informing family members about the candidates’ voting records or phone banking. All the activities, no matter how insignificant it seems, can make a difference in the outcome of an election. “Some elections”, Flood declared, “are won by only one vote.”

Local 862 Retiree Cylister Williams spoke about working through constituency groups, the election process and absentee ballots. Williams informed the delegates about opportunities in the community to help with the election process by driving people to the polls. He covered who was eligible to vote by absentee ballots and who was not. Attendees asked several questions which Williams answered with ease.

UAW Local 862 retiree Chair Mary Briscoe spoke about her experience at the Democratic Convention held in Denver. Briscoe stated the occasion was a once in a lifetime experience. Briscoe encouraged everyone to get involved and to stay involved because the political process affects every person in America.

The first Annual Political Tea covered several areas of interest to women and their families. This Tea is a first step in building and strengthening women in the workplace, family, neighborhood, and community. The Tea gave the Women’s Committee an opportunity to inform and educate the local union membership, about women’s issues, work related issues and family issues. The Tea also provided an opportunity to encourage women to promote and lobby for better laws and policies that affect women. There are still many unresolved issues that affect women today, so the Political Tea will continue.
