Have a little flutter!
RGC LOTTERY LAUNCH
FIRST DRAW: SATURDAY, 15TH JUNE
Most people like a little flutter now and then, and winning cash and supporting your Club at the
same time is a great way to indulge yourself.
The object of the Lottery is to raise money for the benefit of the Club and its members. Half the
total proceeds will be given back to the Club for projects around the clubhouse and course,
perhaps things that fall outside the budgets of the various sections, and members are invited to
make suggestions as to where an investment would be beneficial.
The draw will be done in the Clubhouse at 4 pm on the third Saturday of each month and it’s £5
per number, with no limit on the amount of numbers that can be purchased. A monthly standing
order directly into the RGC Lottery bank account is the best way to ensure your number is in the
draw but, however you decide to enter, payment must be made by the 1st of each month to qualify
for that month’s lottery. At Christmas there will be a bumper draw which will be the usual half of
the proceeds for December, PLUS 10% which will be retained from EACH month’s prize money,
so December’s prizes promise to be well worth winning.
A committee has been set up headed by Joyce Glynn, a social member who has been involved in
the organisation of another lottery, with Past Lady Captain Audrey Jones, Lady Vice Captain Anne
Harrison and the Finance Director, Martin Clark. Rules have been drawn up, a copy of which will
be available on the website and in the clubhouse, and an example of how the division of funds will
operate is appended to the rules.
To enter simply complete the standing order instruction form which can be found on the website or
around the clubhouse and hand it to a member of the committee or place it in the Lottery Box in
the lounge bar. Once payment is received in the bank a number will be allocated for each £5
subscription and each number will be yours whilst your standing order continues.
Remember that the subscription must be paid by the first of the month to qualify for entry into the
draw on the third Saturday of that month.
The more subscribers the greater the prize money and the greater the amount that can be ploughed
back into the Club, so don’t delay, set up a standing order for payment to arrive before 1st June in
time for the first draw on Saturday the 15th June, 2013
You have to
be in it

Fish and Chip Record
At twenty past eight on Good Friday, 29th March
2013 Heather Hall had finished frying and she
made her way upstairs. Standing at the top she
surveyed the scene and found it amazing; just a
sea of people noshing from one end of the room
to the other. What a successful night for the
club.
Taster Sessions
Ken Hodder applied for one of our club’s Taster sessions and having has one lesson from
Alex White, our pro, he has been practising. Peter Howcroft joined him on Easter Sunday
for practice and a few holes. Fortunately Ken concentrated on what he had been told by Alex
rather than try to imitate Peter’s unique style. They are pictured in the dining room recover-
ing from hypothermia.

Ladies’ Spring Meeting, Thursday 28th March 2013
The sky was blue but the sunshine didn’t fool the ladies into thinking it was spring because
the snow of the previous week was still evident on the course and the chill factor from the
biting wind reduced the temperature to below freezing. However, the ladies were deter-
mined to play after two cancelled competitions the previous weekend so battled round for
nine holes instead of 14 and most were glad of the “fresh” air and exercise—so they said!
The winners with 17 points, or the first to choose a prize from the well stocked prize table,
were Jane Hawke and Angela Slate, but then every player received a prize so all were win-
ners in the end.

Fire!
Topiary at RGC
Which one is the gardens at Versailles?
Which one is the path to RGC’s 1st tee?
The tip of the golden statue is a clue!
Come on. Admit it. RGC looks better!
The amount of brash generated by our course is astounding. Most weeks the volunteer
helpers have a fire somewhere preferably where it affects the golfers least. The dry
weather of the last 3 weeks has been marvellous in our efforts to get rid of it.

Men’s Single Stableford Saturday 6th April 2013
Yes. It was a great day for playing golf;
cloudless, little wind, a rolling ball.
But.... Mark’s win by 5 points from Jim
and Graeme and the only player under
par shows that there were other factors
in play. Could it have been that playing
the ball as it lay on the grass? Could it
be the doubly-ironed greens?
Winner: Mark Worsley 40 pts
2nd: Jim Millington 35 pts
3rd Graeme Nuttall 35 pts Phil Hart, a new member to
the club, had his card
marked by Brian Livesey
(in more ways than one!)for

John Ratledge, in his
first competition at
RGC, posted a credit-
able 28 pts and was in
the top 50.

Romiley Vets v Bramall Park Vets (a) Friday 12th April 2013
The Vets’ team began their season with what is an almost traditional visit to Bramall Park,
which meant that the home team enjoyed the significant advantage of facing opponents
struggling to adapt to the demands of playing off grass again.
After several weeks of dry, cold, windy conditions, overnight rain had softened the ground a
little and the wind had dropped, so no complaints … provided the forecast heavy, thundery
showers held off ‘til all were safely gathered in ( … they did ).
It emerged in the reports at the end, that the early matches favoured the
home team – visiting Chairman, Derek Young glanced at the results sheet
and, noticing that Romiley were 5 – 1 down, looked no further. O Ye of little
faith ! A strong finish saw the visitors win the last 4 games to square the
match … the standard ‘ honourable draw’ had been salvaged.
As usual, there were plenty of incidents during the day worthy of later
discussion. Club Vice Captain, Andy Reed, found himself in a match where
he and his partner thought they were doing quite well
and winning holes until a home player commented
that he ‘had a shot here’ and the hole was halved. He dipped into this
seemingly endless fund of shots, confusing the opposition all the way to
the 17th green, where he informed them that they had lost, 2 & 1.
Golf can be cruel, as Alan
Parkey might agree when he
found himself in the greenside
bunker on the huge, par 5 6th
hole. Having composed himself,
he took a big, positive swing
and lofted the ball cleanly out
of the sand and into the air,
only for it to hit him on the
head before falling back to his
feet, still in the hazard.

Kevin Young Alan Parkey Mike Andrew
In the final match, Paul Trafford
overcame the twin handicaps of
suffering the effects of a heavy
cold and partnering your humble
correspondent to play some very
good golf. His two birdies kept the
visitors in touch in a very tight
tussle and he registered wins on
the 17th and 18th to turn what had
seemed to be a lost cause into a
match-halving victory.

Mr. Captain’s Charity Evening
The medical staff at Stepping Hill critical care unit approached Wythenshawe’s ECMO team
when it became apparent that without their specialist help my brother would not survive a
motor bike accident.
ECMO is a highly specialist treatment which helps patients whose lungs or heart are not
working properly by using a complex machine to pump and oxygenate the blood outside the
body thus allowing the damaged organs the time necessary to recover.
In my brother’s case this took eight days after which he was transferred back to Stepping
Hill to complete his recovery, finally returning home 9 months after the accident.
There is no doubt how fortunate Neil was as Wythenshawe only got funding to test the
equipment on a serious trauma case a couple of days previously.

Romiley Golf Club – Signs
In October last year a full survey was carried out of all
RGC signs. Problems with lack of coordination,
inaccurate and a shortage of information and many other
factors meant that RGC was very badly portrayed. Our
image needed to be sorted out.
A proposal was prepared, with the help of the Articles,
Rules, Byelaws, Equality and H & S Committee and
contributions from Members, Alex White and Directors,
and it was put to the Board and accepted.
Installation commenced late March and with one
exception is now completed.
We now have:-
Welcoming sign for Members and Visitors at the entrance and a similar sign
indicates the ‘Main Entrance’.
Most signs have the same wording but significant changes have been made to the
three outside the Professional’s Shop.
All public footpaths are signposted and ‘Private’ signs are in place to deter the
public from walking over the course.
150 yard markers on all par 4 and 5 holes with smart white discs in the fairways.
Murray Padkin
And the signs not yet in place?
European Deep Water signs for the
ponds.
We hope you enjoy these improvements
to Romiley Golf Club possible because
one member has created them, made
them and donated them. Thank you!
Ellis Cooper - a winner!
Ellis Cooper proudly wearing his first medal awarded after a 9
hole Comp on 4th April, 2013. Ellis, 7 years of age, is one of our
youngest members. He is the grandson of Ken Cooper, ex-
President and Director of House, of RGC. Ellis shows
tremendous enthusiasm and clearly has a lot of potential. We
don’t think it will be very long before he is giving his granddad
a good game.

St. George’s Dinner, Saturday 20th April 2013
A thoughtful grace from Lady Captain began proceedings and everyone tucked into lovely,
traditional English food. But one could feel the ambience quickly changing as though they
were greyhounds in the slips straining upon the start: the show’s afoot and they followed
their high spirits and a rousing, patriotic and boisterous night ensued. “Jerusalem”
soared;”Land of Hope and Glory” zinged; “Rule Britannia” was commanding. Were
people auditioning for “The Voice”? Lady Captain’s table led the way as they waved their
flags, swayed from side to side and jiggled their bowlers. Elise was her usual fabulous self;
warm, energetic, engaging the audience. What quality.
The audience went ecstatic when Peter and Judi Howcroft were Ike and Tina Turner but
with the roles reversed. Judi was a natural; Peter wasn’t but he did look good in Tina
Turner’s wig. Thanks to Chris and Rachel Broster for masterminding such a wonderful
night.

Margaret Hamlet
On Monday 15th April the funeral took place of Past
Lady Captain Margaret Hamlet who passed away on
29th March. Margaret joined Romiley Golf Club in
1968 and was a very cheerful, popular and active
member. She served for many years on the
committee and become Lady Captain in 1976.
Margaret was a keen gardener and played tennis
and other sports as well as golf. In later years she
suffered from hip problems and ill-health and both
she and her husband became social members.
Despite no longer being able to play, she maintained
her interest in golf and contact with her friends and
loved to catch up on RGC golfing activities at every
opportunity.
As a lasting legacy Margaret, Joan Sykes and Doris
Brindle generously presented the Ladies Section with
a trophy for which the Past Lady Captains play each
year. At present the coveted silver plate, pictured
her, is held by Jill Wolstencroft.
Margaret was very close to her daughter, Rosemary,
son-in-law, Martin and two grandsons, Nicholas and
Charles. We send sincere condolences to them and
Margaret’s husband, George, who tirelessly cared
for her through her long illness. Margaret will be
greatly missed.
Greenkeeper Steve Clarke was
delighted to announce the birth of
his daughter, Alice, on Wednesday
24th April 2013. Alice weighed a
healthy 8 lbs and at present it
doesn’t look as though she has his
fiery, red hair..... Yet!

Lady Captain’s St George’s Day Charity Lun
The toast to St George rang loudly and
clearly at RGC on Tuesday, 23rd April,
when 42 lady members and guests
gathered to celebrate the day. The
dining room was suitably decorated and
looked very inviting in some lovely
spring sunshine, the warmest day so far
this year, and the ladies who lunched
enjoyed the gorgeous food and chatter. Thank you to all the ladies for attending, buying raffle tickets and
guessing the weight of Lady Captain’s home baked beautifully decorated cake, and a very special thank you to
Heather for her special deal for a super lunch.
No knights in shining armour appeared (not that anyone
needed to be rescued) but nonetheless the event was
declared a resounding success and raised £255 for
Muscular Dystrophy, Romiley Golf Club’s charity this
year.
