After a particularly violent clash between Verona's two most powerful families—the Montagues and the Capulets—Prince Escalus orders peace in the land. Any future disturbances will be punished by death. Lord Capulet, as a show of good faith, promises his daughter Juliet's hand in marriage to the Prince's nephew, Paris. In celebration of the engagement, a masked ball is arranged. Romeo Montague and his friends attend the celebration in disguise. There, Romeo and Juliet meet and fall in love, despite their warring families. Friar Laurence, who hopes the union will put an end to the feud, secretly weds them the next day. Before the young lovers can settle their plans, more fighting erupts between the houses. Romeo refuses to fight Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, as they are now related by marriage. Instead, Romeo's gallant friend, Mercutio, takes the challenge himself. He is by mischance slain and Romeo, enraged, kills Tybalt. Due to the circumstances, the Prince mercifully banishes Romeo from Verona, rather than immediately punishing him by death. Juliet's father insists that her marriage to Paris go ahead as soon as possible. She again enlists Friar Laurence's help. He instructs her to pretend to agree to the wedding, but to take a sleeping potion that will make her appear dead for forty-eight hours. She will be laid to rest in the Capulet family vault, and when she awakens, Romeo will be there to steal her away. The plan nearly works, except that Friar Laurence's message to Romeo explaining the situation is not duly delivered. Romeo, hearing only of Juliet's "death," hastens to the vault where Paris surprises him. They fight and Romeo kills him. Heartbroken, Romeo takes poison and dies next to Juliet's body. When she wakes and finds him dead, she stabs herself with his dagger. The families are alerted and rush to the tomb. As the Friar explains the tragic events, Montague and Capulet finally see the damage caused by their feud and end the war between their houses.

SYNOPSIS

Cymbeline, the King of Britain has a daughter, Imogen, and two sons who were stolen in infancy. The wicked queen, his second wife, wished for her son, Cloten, to marry Imogen, but Imogen has secretly married a commoner, Posthumous Leonatus. In fury over her elopement, Cymbeline banishes Posthu-mous to Rome, where he meets Iachimo, who wagers with him that he can seduce Imogen.

Meanwhile in Britain, the queen tells her doctor to make a poison to kill Imogen, but the doctor doesn’t trust her and makes a sleeping potion instead. The queen gives Pisanio, a servant, the potion and tells him to give it to Imogen as a cure for any ailment. Arriving in Britain, Iachimo realizes that Imogen is incorruptible, but, hiding in her bedroom, he obtains evidence that convinces Posthumous that Iachimo has slept with Imogen. In a jealous rage, Posthumous writes a letter ordering Pisanio to kill Imogen, but instead Pisanio assists her to run away to Wales and disguise herself as Fidele, a boy page. He also gives her the potion, believing it is a "sovereign restorative."

Now lost in Wales, Imogen encounters Belarius, a banished noble who kidnapped Cymbeline's infant sons (Guiderius and Arviragus) twenty years before. Imogen, still disguised as the page Fidele, is invited to stay with them.

Cloten pursues Imogen in Posthumous' clothes, determined to rape her and kill Posthumous. Instead, he is killed by one of Imogen’s brothers, and his decapitated body laid beside Imogen, who has taken the potion, which makes her appear dead. When she revives, Imogen/ Fidele joins the Roman army, which is invading Britain as a result of Cymbeline's failure to pay tribute to Rome. A massive battle ensues where Posthumous and the stolen princes are instrumental in defeating the Roman army and saving Britain. A final scene of explanations leads to private and public reconciliation for everyone.
