Romeo & Juliet Facts• Setting: Verona, Italy

• Total death count: 6

• The play is inspired by Arthur Brooke’s poem “The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet”, written in 1562. This was very common.

• First published in the mid 1590’s

• Due to Elizabethan law, Juliet (and all other female roles) would have been played by young men in the original production at the Globe Theatre.

• Romeo and Juliet is argued to be Shakespeare’s first play about romantic love.

• Romeo and Juliet, alongside Hamlet, is probably Shakespeare’s most performed play and has also been adapted in many forms.
