Romeo and Juliet – Dialectical Journal – English I Pre-AP/IB

Instructions: From Acts I-V create a dialectical journal of 10 entries (see back for types). Entries may be typed or NEATLY handwritten on notebook paper. Each passage on the left should be in quotation marks, labeled with the journal

category, and have proper documentation (Act.Scene.Lines) The right hand column is your commentary, observations, and analysis about the

text. A) Who says it, what is going on, when is it said, and where is it said? B) Why is it important and how does it relate to the journal category?

You may NOT use the commentary in your book margins as your quote or your own commentary. Your commentary must be your own (not from an outside source nor from a classmate).

Failure to follow directions will result in point deductions.

Sample Dialectical Entries: the examples below may not be used.

Journal Category, Passage, and Documentation Commentary (A) Who, what, when, and where? (B) How and why?

Extended Metaphor1. “It is the East and Juliet is the sun./ Arise,

fair sun, and kill the envious moon,/Who is already sick and pale with grief/That thou her maid art more fair than she” (2.2.3-6)

Extended Metaphor: A) Romeo says this during the balcony scene when he is gazing at Juliet’s window. B) This is an extended metaphor because Romeo’s comparison of Juliet to the sun communicates how beautiful he thinks she is—so beautiful that others should feel envious of her. This comparison is one of many about heavenly/celestial things and sets up an extended metaphor.

Pun2. “Not I, believe me. You have dancing

shoes./With nimble soles; I have a soul of lead/So stakes me to the ground I cannot move.” (1.4.14-16)

Pun: A) In this scene Romeo says this when he and his friends are walking to the Capulet masquerade to sneak in so Benvolio can show other girls to Romeo to take is mind off of Rosaline. B) With this pun, Romeo makes it clear that he’s not interested in dancing or being in a light, happy mood for the Capulet party by using word play to suggest that his friends have nimble “soles” (feet) to dance and he has a “soul” (spirit/mood) which is too heavy for any sort of festivities.

Revise this to include the “skitless soldier” sim.

Notice the documentation.

Notice the labeling.

Romeo and Juliet - Prologue

Chorus: Two households, both alike in dignity,In fair Verona where we lay our scene,

From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.

From forth the fatal loins of these two foesA pair of star-crossed lovers take their life,

Whose misadventures, piteous overthrowsDo with their death bury their parents’ strife.

The fearful passage of their death marked love,And the continuance of their parents’ rage,

Which but their children’s end, naught could remove,Is now the two hours’ traffic of our stage;

The which if you with patient ears attend,What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend.

Questions1. What is the place setting of the play?

2. What is the relationship between the two households?

3. What does Shakespeare mean by “star-crossed lovers”?

4. What happens to the lovers?

5. What is the subject matter of the play?

6. What does the chorus ask of the audience in the last two lines? Why?

7. What is the name of the poetic form which Shakespeare uses for the Prologue? How many lines are there?

8. Mark the rhyming pattern.

9. Underline examples of alliteration.
