RayLemieux,ofSarasota,entitled“TearingupTerrestrials”.Andtearituphedid.Rayshowedushowtoclean

up,divide, and repot someof thespiniestbromeliadson theplanet. Hisplant surgeonskillswereamazing. I

thinkwewereallstunnedbythewayhehandledsuchpricklyplants.

His-irstspecimenwastheverysucculentCryptanthusleopoldohorspii,fromBrazil.Hispottingmixofchoicefor

thisplantis“dirtyperlite”:75%perlite(largegranule)and25%soil(regularsoilmix).Therewereabout20off-

setsfromthemother(thathadalreadybloomed).Ithadovergrownitspot.Deadfoliagewascutorpulledoffthe

motherplantbeforeputtingitbackintothesamepot.Thetrickistopackthesoilrightuparoundthebaseofthe

plantinordertogetmorepups,andthenfeeditlikecrazy.(Noteondirtymix:Vermiculitedoesn’tworklikeper-

liteandisnotagoodsubstitution).

ADeuterocohniawas thenextplantpatient. Thereare2 types;oneswithsmallrosettesandoneswithbigro-

settes.(Secretary’snote:Imissedsomedetailaboutthe-lowerstalkbeingaliveandperennialbloomspike).Ray

hadabunchofseedlingsfromwhichhepulledoffdeadleavesandpotted3to5toapotinastandardsoilmix.

ThiswasD.laurenciata.

AspeciesofNeoglaziovia,fromBrazil,wasnext.Itsendspupswaydownthestem.Ononeoftheirexpeditions,

WallyBergfoundsomepups,onawildplant,3feetdown.Potsfortheseplantsnecessarilyneedtobetaller.

Rayhadsomeplantsthatweregrownfromseedandgrewintoapinkvariety.Thesoilisaheavymix.Thisplant

shouldbepottedalittledeepsoitdoesn’t-loparoundinthepotandnotroot.Itproducesaskinny,reddishspike

withpurple-lowers.

Next,wasaDyckia.Dyckiacanproducesomanyleavesthatwatercan’tgettothesoil.Raycutoffanyleavesthat

curleddownoverthelipofthepot.ThisplantwasahybridofD.reetzii-rubrawithD.X“Mercury”.Raycutoffthe

baseoftheroots,thengrabbeddeadleavesfromthebaseofthetrunkwithhisnippersandtwistedthemoff,then

tookoffanyotherleavesnotneeded.Toseparateplants,hecutoutmoreleavesandcutthebaseandpluckedoff

anyleavesnotneeded.Culturalnote:eventinylittleDyckiapupscanusuallybegrownon.

Ray’snextpatientwasanEncholirium,whichissomewhatlikeHechtia,whichwasgrownfromseed,boughtfrom

aguyinBrazil.Youhavetogetintothebaseoftheplanttoseewhat’sgoingon.Hewasabletosplitthisoneinto

4separateplants. Asaculturalnote,Dyckia cangrowreal fast ifyouDON’Tgrowthem likeacactus, i.e.,give

themlotsofwaterandfertilizer.Encholiriumgrowsfast,too,iffedheavily.Hementionedafertilizercalledsome-

thinglike“triple13-180dayrelease”.Anyonegetthat?

If-ireantsareaprobleminyourplants,useTelstarorOrthene(killsmealybug,too).

Pitcairniaorchidifoliaisaleafyterrestrial.Heshowedusthetuberstheseplantsproduce,waydowninthebot-

tomofthepot.Don’tthrowanoldrootballaway.Therearealotoftubersamongsttherootsandthesearegrow-

able. Useastandardsucculentmix.Ray’sstandardsucculentmixcontainssandandsomeperliteandsoil. Pit-

cairnialoveswaterbutcan’tbetoowet.Pluckoffoldleaves.Providebright-ilteredlight.MostPitslikeshade,

buthespottedthisplantgrowinginVenezuelainfullsun,howevertheywereonlyabout8”tall.

thesoilbackinthepot.Fertilizeandpushthesoilrightupnexttothetrunktopromotepups.

OrthophytumX“BrittleStar”(saxicolaisinthehybridparentage,whichisstoloniferous)hasabloomspike.This

plantgetsaregularsoilmix.Raycleaneduptherosettes.Allthedeadleavescameoff(leaveswillburniffertiliz-

ersitsonthem).Thisparticularplanthadmorethan20pups.

“Upper-puppers”producepupsonthebloomspikeupatthetopofthebloom.Thesecanbepottedupafterclean-

ingofftheold-lower.

Rayshared the trick tomakingasinglepupper typeplant (monocarpic)makemultiplepups. Hedamagedthe

centerbystabbingit(don’tstaballthewaythrough),thencutoffthebottomleaves.Thismightmaketheplant

produce10to12offsets.Justkeeppluckingthemoff,andthenleaveitasadoubleheadortripleheadorwhatev-

erpatternyou’dlike.Feeditlikecrazy.Encholiriumhorridum(monocarpic)istrickytogrowfromseed.It’sbest

tostabitbeforeit-lowers.

HistoolofchoiceisapairofKamakibrandclippers(DidIgetthespellingofthebrandcorrect?)

Ray’stake-homeculturalnoteforterrestrials:Growinbrightlight,feedheavily,andwaterwell,evenifit’sasuc-

culent.

RaytreatedourclubwithofferingsofDeuterocohnialongipetula.Hehada-lat-fullofplantsforthewholemem-

bership.Thisplanthasaperennialbloomandiscold-hardy.

Anominatingcommitteewasselected(LoisWood,Chair;HowardFrank;andChrisGeorge).

Howard presented information aboutHarry Luther. Dennis Cathcart had suggested an endowed chair atUF.

Howardhasn’t foundanyoneinterested inbromeliads inBiology. CALShasHorticulturalScienceandEnviron-

mentalHorticulturebutstillnoonewhoworkswithbromeliads.JeanThomasmentionedthatthechairofBiolo-

gymighthaveaninterestandthatshewillbeincontactwithher.

ChrisGeorgewillbeourFLCouncilofBromeliadSocietiesrepresentativenextyear.

OurmeetinginNovemberwillincludeaplantexchange.Wrapitupsoitiscovered.Davidpresentedthequestion

ofwhetheroursocietywoulddoanExtravaganzaorcombineeffortswithsomeothersocietytoputoneon.It’s

somethingtothinkabout. It isnotasmallendeavor,andrequiressuch logisticsasregistration,achairperson,

organizingspeakers,andprovidingsecurity,nottomentioncontractingsomesortofvenue,likeahotel.

ShowandTellcommencedat3:45.Chrisshowedus2paintingsheshowedattheWorldConferencewhichboth

wonAwardsofMerit. HealsowonaBlueRibbonforapineapplepainting,andaBlueRibbonforaplantentry.
