FOCUS ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
FROM CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION
www.cffor.org
Celebrate! Religious Freedom Day is Here!
"Each year since 1993, the President declares January 16th to be
'Religious Freedom Day,' and calls upon Americans to 'observe this
day through appropriate events and activities in homes, schools, and
places of worship.'
"This is a great opportunity to teach students a civics lesson about the First
Amendment and how it can be applied to schools," writes Gateways to Better
Education.
Our Founders leaned heavily on Thomas Jefferson's Virginia Statute for Reli-
gious Freedom, passed on January 16, 1786, when they established the First
Amendment's guarantee of religious freedom. This Virginia legislation stopped
the practice of taxing people to pay for the support of the local state approved
church and clergy and it protected the civil rights of people to express their reli-
gious beliefs without suffering discrimination.
To commemorate the day, schools can recognize Religious Freedom, the founda-
tion of all our freedoms, with some of the following ideas:
* Read the Presidential Proclamation that every president composes and signs
each year on January 16th and can be found at www.whitehouse.gov.
* Ask students to discuss and/or write about "What religious freedom means to
me."
* Talk about countries where religious freedom is not allowed and that almost
3/4 of the world's population is denied this freedom that Americans enjoy.
Action Steps: 1. Contact your local School District and Board of Education and encourage
them to recognize and celebrate Religious Freedom Day.
2. Go to www.cffor.org and www.GoGateways.org for additional information
and ideas.

LITURGY CORNER The new Catechism continues with the last seven Commandments which
refer to the love of our neighbor. Here are summaries of the fourth and fifth
commandments.
“Honor your father and your mother.” According to the fourth command-
ment, God has willed that, after him, we should honor our parents and those
whom he has vested with authority for our good. Marriage and family are ordered to the good
of the spouses, to the procreation and the education of children. Children owe their parents
respect, gratitude, just obedience, and assistance. Parents have the first responsibility for the
education of their children in the faith, prayer, and all the virtues. They have the duty to pro-
vide as far as possible for the physical and spiritual needs of their children. They should re-
member and teach that the first calling of the Christian is to follow Jesus. Public authority is
obliged to respect the fundamental rights of the human persons and the conditions for the ex-
ercise of their freedom. It is the duty of citizens to work with civil authority for building up
society in a spirit of truth, justice, solidarity, and freedom. Citizens are obliged in conscience
not to follow the directives of civil authorities when they are contrary to the demands of the
moral order. We must obey God rather than men.
“You shall not kill.” Every human life, from the moment of conception until death, is sacred
because the human person has been willed for its own sake in the image and likeness of God.
The murder of a human being is gravely contrary to the dignity of the person and the holiness
of the Creator. The prohibition of murder does not abrogate the right to render an unjust ag-
gressor unable to inflict harm. From its conception, the child has the right to life. Direct abor-
tion, that is, abortion willed as an end or as a means, is a criminal practice, gravely contrary
to the moral law. Because it should be treated as a person from conception, the embryo must
be defended in its integrity, cared for, and healed like every other human being. Intentional
euthanasia, whatever its forms or motives, is murder. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of
the human person and to the respect due to the living God, his Creator. Suicide is seriously
contrary to justice, hope, and charity. It is forbidden by the fifth commandment. Scandal is a
grave offense when by deed or omission it deliberately leads others to sin gravely. Because of
the evils and injustices that all war brings with it, we must do everything reasonably possible
to avoid it. Practices deliberately contrary to the law of nations and to its universal principles
are crimes.
The fourth commandment is the first of those dealing with love of neighbor, emphasizing the
importance of the family in human life. Children must love their parents, but even more so
does it deal with how parents must care for their children, and it finishes with details of our
duties toward civil authority. The fifth commandment emphasizes the sanctity of human life
from conception to natural death. Let there be no doubt that abortion is murder in the eyes of
the Church in accordance with this commandment. Other important aspects are that we are
able to defend ourselves and our nation against unjust attacks, but serious attention must be
given to the legitimacy of such defense.
THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
For most of us, the Christmas season ended a couple of weeks ago.
Decorations are probably already packed away, and perhaps some of
the kids’ toys may have already been broken. Certainly they’ve run
out of batteries more than once! Hello, I’m Father Greg Friedman, and
this is the “Sunday Soundbite” for the Baptism of the Lord.
This feast marks the ending of the Christmas season. Traditionally, the event of
Christ’s baptism was linked with the visit of the Magi and the wedding feast of Cana
as two additional “manifestations” of God with us.
Matthew’s simple account of the baptism ends with the heavenly voice introducing
“my beloved Son.” Here, at the end of our focus on the mystery of Christmas, we
are invited to welcome the Beloved One into our midst once more, and to prepare
ourselves through the Sundays which follow to hear his proclamation of Good
News.
Many have expressed the wish that the spirit of Christmas last all through the year.
Christians take that responsibility seriously: We want to make the meaning of
Christmas—the fact that God has come to dwell with us in Jesus Christ—the central
fact of life. And, we want all we say and do to help express, to make manifest, that
basic truth. Merry Christmas, one more time!
