PARISH INFORMATION Easter Sunday JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad. Alleluia! Easter is always, but especially in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the victory of God’s gentle but invincible mercy raising up Jesus, “faithful witness, the first-born of the dead” (Revelation 1:5), “first-born among many brothers [and sisters]” (Romans 8:29), conquering death in all its forms, in all of us in the human family. In Luke’s Vigil Gospel, heavenly messengers send the women forth: “Remember what [Jesus] said to you” (Luke 24:6). In John’s Gospel, the empty tomb likewise “sends forth” Mary Magdalene, Peter, and the Beloved Disciple, who believe though they do not fully understand. Finally, Luke’s evening “Emmaus” Gospel sends us forth, as “missionaries of mercy,” assuring us that we will encounter the Risen Lord, today and every day, in “the stranger” we meet along life’s journey, in “the Word that makes our hearts burn within us,” and “in the breaking of bread” (see Luke 24:32, 35). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc., Papal quotes Copyright © 2013, Libreria Editrice Vaticana. Used with permission. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading - Peter is an eyewitness: The
Lord is risen (Acts 10:34a, 37-43). Psalm - This is the day the Lord has made; let
us rejoice and be glad (Psalm 118). (1) Second Reading - All who are baptized, set
your hearts in heaven (Colossians 3:1-4) or (2) Second Reading - Christ our Passover is
sacrificed; therefore let us celebrate (1 Corinthians 5:6b-8).
Gospel - Three witnesses, Mary, Peter, and John; each responds to the empty tomb (John 20:1-9) or Luke 24:1-12 (or, at an afternoon or evening Mass, Luke 24:13-35).

St. Dominic Savio He is the patron saint of our Parish. He is a saint at nearly fifteen years of age. He was educated by St. John Bosco at the Oratory of St. Francis de Sales. For St. Dominic Savio, holiness consists of always being cheerful and of doing one’s ordinary duties, extraordinarily well. His Feast Day is on May 6.

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. An Easter Message from Fr. Chinh Nguyen, SDB My dear sisters and brothers in the Risen Christ: This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad. This day, so full of your presence, your joy, your peace, is indeed your day (our Risen Jesus), to you all praise and glory!
Easter is the greatest feast of our faith. So what is Easter (so as to appreciate and understand its importance for living life in faith)? Easter brings the awareness that God is active even when his presence is not directly noticed (how true is that?). Easter is about acknowledging the breaking in of eternity into the ordinary patterns of our lives and
this ‘breakthrough’ reserves for no one yet for everyone. There is no boundary in God’s power and might. Therefore, Easter calls for faith. Those who know the loss and pain of death know too well the hard, long search to find signs of life. We don’t experience a sudden glorious moment of life returned. Like the anonymous disciple, we often stay some time within the tomb before finding grace to turn and enter into life. Such grace is found in simple signs of love that does endure. Perhaps this is why ‘the beloved’ disciple first reaches Easter faith (found in the Gospel of John 20: 1-9). Roll away the stone and walk toward the light of dawn—Resurrection. We are the Easter People and Alleluia is our song. More to come…next time….

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Fifty years or so ago, it was popular to teach that every Sunday is a “Little Easter.” Today, after several decades of intense liturgical reform, it is more proper to think of today as a “Big Sunday.” On every Sunday of the year, the Church is obliged to assemble, keeping the day holy. In most places, we hardly attain the goal of gathering all who are in Christ by baptism. Look around today and see what a Big Sunday looks like! Our tradition speaks of remembering, anamnesis, as the antidote to “amnesia,” the tragic forgetting of who God is and who we are as God’s most beloved creation. On this Easter day, we are at our very best. We remember who God is, and we remember who we are in God’s eyes: beloved sons and daughters, reborn to eternal life in baptismal waters. We rekindle our candles and reclaim our baptismal promises. As a “Big Sunday,” today also reflects the character of festivity and leisure that should mark every Lord’s Day. We wear “Sunday best” today, and we may take some time, especially in the northern states, to stroll through a budding garden. It is truly a “Big Sunday,” and how different our lives would be if we took its values and traditions forward into all the Sundays of our lives. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
