This weekend we celebrate the beautiful feast of Our Lady of Mt Carmel.

The word “Carmel” means “God’s Garden.” It is the name of a town on a cliff

overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in Israel. It is referred to in the Old testament

as a place where God worked wonderful miracles. In Christian times it has been the

site of a monastery. The tradition of wearing the brown scapular began in the tenth century

promoting Mary’s role in helping souls in Purgatory. In 1251 Mary appeared to St.

Simon Stock. The apparition promised that whoever wore the scapular till death would

be preserved from Hell and on the first Saturday after death would be taken by

Mary into Heaven. The Church has always been careful to

point out that no religious article is miraculous in itself and that salvation

always depends upon the life and faith of the wearer.

which is truly “God’s Beautiful Garden.”

Este fin de semana celebramos la hermosa fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Monte Carmelo. La palabra "Carmelo" significa "Jardín de Dios". Es el nombre de una ciudad en un

acantilado con vistas al mar Mediterráneo en Israel. Se hace referencia en el Antiguo

Testamento como un lugar donde Dios hizo milagros maravillosos. En los tiempos

Cristianos ha sido el sitio de un monasterio. La tradición de usar el escapulario marrón

comenzó en el siglo X promoviendo el papel de María en ayudar a las almas

del Purgatorio. En 1251, María se apareció a San Simón Stock. La aparición prometió que quien llevara el escapulario hasta la muerte

sería preservado del infierno y el primer Sábado después de la muerte, sería llevado al

cielo por María. La Iglesia siempre ha sido cuidadosa al

señalar que ningún artículo religioso es milagroso en sí mismo y que la salvación siempre depende de la vida y la fe

del usuario.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Year A Readings: Wisdom 12:13,16-19; Romans 8:26-27; Matthew 13:24-43.

The metaphor of the wheat and the weeds left to grow together till harvest is the key to understanding the message Jesus proclaims this Sunday. He proclaims a kingdom of for-giveness, compassion, justice and tolerance. The readings help us to discover our God who is full of mercy and forgiveness. Forgiveness is one of the hardest things we can do espe-cially to an enemy. Yet there are many examples of extraordinary courage in forgiveness. In the First Reading from the Book of Wisdom we hear that God governs with great le-nience. When we repent of our sins, God always forgives us. Psalm 86 picks up that theme in a beautiful prayer: “Lord you are good and forgiving”. In Gospel Parable of the Wheat and the Weeds, Jesus reveals to us the mystery of the Kingdom, which is compared to a per-son who planted wheat, and while asleep, some enemies came and sowed weeds. These weeds look very much like wheat as they grow. What is the kingdom of Heaven that Jesus speaks about? The Kingdom Jesus reveals to us must not be understood as a place up in the sky. Rather this Kingdom is a state of being in which God rules and God's values prevail. Jesus in many ways lived and taught about these values. In the parable, Jesus powerfully communicates these values, namely for-giveness, compassion, justice, a sense of solidarity, and inclusiveness of all human beings God has created in his image and likeness. That is why the kingdom of heaven is compared to a farmer who sowed good seed and while asleep an enemy sawed weeds. The image of the farmer leaving both the wheat and the weeds to grow up together till harvest is the key to understanding how God deals with us. Jesus challenges us to be like his Father: patient, lenient and tolerant with sinners, letting the wheat continue to grow among the weeds until the harvest. Who knows, the sinner may be touched by God's grace and repent? Who knows, between now and harvest time the non-believer might be led to the fullness of the truth in ways known to God alone. The Kingdom of God therefore is always a mixed bag of those in communion with God, and those who are not; those who have remained faithful and those led astray by the evil one. It is tragic that often times we deal with this ‘mixed-bag’ situation by judging others while justifying ourselves. Like the farmer in the Gospel, we must leave judgment to God till the end. We must leave all to grow side by side till harvest time. The parable also re-minds us that we must be as tolerant as our heavenly Father who is always forgiving. We celebrate God's mercy by letting God to do the judging at the end of time. So this is the message we can take from this Sunday readings: 1-Because the Kingdom of God is a mixed bag of both the good and the bad, we are challenged to be tolerant, com-passionate and forgiving like our God; 2- Jesus in the parable warns that we must not take God’s tolerance as license to do what we want for there are consequences in the end the harvest time. 3- We pray that God may give us the grace of his loving mercy and for-giveness, especially through the Sacrament of reconciliation. Décimo Sexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. Año A Lecturas: Sabiduría 12: 13,16-19; Romanos 8: 26-27; Mateo 13: 24-43.

La metáfora del trigo y las malas hierbas que dejaron de crecer juntas hasta la cosecha es la clave para entender el mensaje que Jesús proclama este Domingo.. Proclama un reino de perdón, compasión, justicia y tolerancia. Las lecturas nos ayudan a descubrir a nuestro Dios que está lleno de misericordia y perdón. El perdón es una de las cosas más difíciles que po-demos hacer especialmente a un enemigo. Sin embargo, hay muchos ejemplos de coraje ex-traordinario en el perdón. En la primera lectura del Libro de la Sabiduría, escuchamos que Dios gobierna con gran in-dulgencia. Cuando nos arrepentimos de nuestros pecados, Dios siempre nos perdona. El Salmo 85 retoma ese tema en una hermosa oración: "Señor, eres bueno y perdonador". En la parábola del Evangelio del trigo y las malas hierbas, Jesús nos revela el misterio del Reino, que se com-para con una persona que plantó trigo, y mientras dormía, algunos enemigos vinieron y sembra-ron las malas hierbas. Estas malezas se parecen mucho al trigo a medida que crecen. ¿De qué reino de los cielos habla Jesús? El Reino que Jesús nos revela no debe entenderse como un lugar en el cielo. Más bien, este Reino es un estado de ser en el que Dios gobierna y los valores de Dios prevalecen. Jesús de muchas maneras vivió y enseñó acerca de estos valores. En la parábola, Jesús comunica poderosamente estos valores, a saber, perdón, com-pasión, justicia, un sentido de solidaridad e inclusión de todos los seres humanos que Dios ha creado a su imagen y semejanza. Es por eso que el Reino de los Cielos se compara con un granjero que sembró buena semilla y mientras dormía un enemigo cortaba malas hierbas. La imagen del agricultor dejando que tanto el trigo como las malas hierbas crezcan juntos hasta la cosecha es la clave para entender cómo Dios nos trata. Jesús nos reta a ser como su Pa-dre: paciente, indulgente y tolerante con los pecadores, dejando que el trigo continúe creciendo entre las malas hierbas hasta la cosecha. ¿Quién sabe, el pecador puede ser tocado por la gracia de Dios y arrepentirse? Quién sabe, entre ahora y el tiempo de la cosecha, el no creyente podría ser llevado a la plenitud de la verdad de maneras conocidas solo por Dios. Por lo tanto, el Reino de Dios es siempre una mezcla de aquellos en comunión con Dios y aquellos que no lo están; los que han permanecido fieles y los descarriados por el maligno. Es trágico que muchas veces lidiemos con esta situación, juzgando a los demás y justificándonos. Como el granjero en el Evangelio, debemos dejar el juicio a Dios hasta el final. Debemos dejar que todos crezcan uno al lado del otro hasta el momento de la cosecha. La parábola también nos recuerda que debemos ser tan tolerantes como nuestro Padre celestial que siempre es indul-gente. Celebramos la misericordia de Dios al dejar que Dios juzgue al final de los tiempos. Así que este es el mensaje que podemos tomar de las lecturas de este Domingo: 1-Debido a que el Reino de Dios es una mezcla de lo bueno y lo malo, tenemos el desafío de ser tolerantes, compasivos y perdonadores como nuestro Dios; 2- Jesús en la parábola advierte que no debe-mos tomar la tolerancia de Dios como licencia para hacer lo que queremos porque hay con-secuencias al final del tiempo de cosecha. 3- Oramos para que Dios nos dé la gracia de su amo-rosa misericordia y perdón, especialmente a través del Sacramento de la reconciliación. Que Dios te bendiga. Amén.
