Pastor’s Corner

There seems to be a trend that grows stronger with the passing of each year. This trend involves the expression of a sentiment. In fact, I’m sure most people expressing this sentiment are thinking that they are doing as they always have or in some cases have come to the point in their life where they find a compulsion to express it. The trend is subtle and seemingly innocent and I think most people who do it, never really pay it any mind. I think a majority of people have not noticed the shift…but it exists. The devil is in the details.

This sentiment of which I am writing, is Gratitude. Gratitude is that sentiment or quality of being

thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. There are many words that are synonymous…acknowledgment, acceptance, admission, indebtedness are just a few. Most of us are very familiar with at least the idea of Gratitude.

The trend however is not so much in the expression of Gratitude. If my perceptions are correct, the

expression of Gratitude has increased in recent years. One has only to Google the word. There are countless websites dedicated to Gratitude. Religious, philosophical, medical and even scientific sources all praise the importance of living lives of Gratitude.

So, what is this trend? It lies in a single word, a preposition. Gratitude by definition is a two-

part process. It is being Grateful for something or someone. This is grammatically the Direct Object. We say I am grateful for my parents. I am grateful for good weather. I am grateful for my education, for my apartment, the food in my belly, the health and freedom I enjoy, etc. I might even be grateful for some adversity, suffering or cross. This is an acknowledgement for the gifts in my life. But because gifts come from outside myself, in order to complete the process of Gratitude, I must also acknowledge the source of those gifts and this requires another object. In short, I must be grateful to someone.

I say someone because in the end all things have their source in God. I may be grateful for my

vocation. But I did not call myself. I was called by another. So therefore, if I wish to truly be grateful, I must not only acknowledge that I am grateful for this vocation; but I also must mention to whom I am grateful. It is then that I realize that I am grateful not only to God, but also to my parents to my friends, spiritual directors, professors, benefactors, and to the innumerable people that supported and prayed me where I am today.

While it is fairly common these days to see an athlete point up to the sky and acknowledge the source of

his or her achievement and no awards show is complete without the thanking of all those who made this moment possible…the trend I am observing is in the question, “For what or who are you most grateful?”. Most have no problem in making that list. What I am suggesting is that we really challenge ourselves in not only naming what we are grateful for but that we invest the time in identifying to whom we are most grateful for receiving these gifts. To do any less is really not to express the fullness of Gratitude.

Why is this important? Because words are important and so are ideas. As Christians we are losing the

cultural wars. Just Google the word Easter in “Google Image”. You would be hard pressed to find an image of our Lord among the neon and sugary images. Every year, Christmas seems to be less about the Incarnation, and more about consumerism. Advent...well let’s just say you would be hard pressed to find Advent music playing in the Mall. Though it is not a liturgical Holy Day, Thanksgiving it seems, was the last Holiday that had not been separated from God and there is no doubt that the originators of this Holiday had God in mind.

This new trend ultimately allows this to happen. The separation of God from Thanksgiving Day has

now become a reality. For when we do not acknowledge the dual ends of our gratitude…for what we are grateful and to whom we are grateful then it is possible for a table full of atheists to express Gratitude as we do and that should bring us some concern.

In the weeks ahead, I will be using this column to acknowledge not only for what I am grateful but to

whom I am grateful. The lists are long, for God is good all the time! Happy Thanksgiving!

Parece que hay una tendencia que se hace más fuerte con el paso de los años. Esta tendencia implica la expresión de un sentimiento. De hecho, estoy seguro de que la mayoría de las personas que expresan este sentimiento, piensan que están haciendo lo que siempre han hecho o, en algunos casos, han llegado al punto en su vida en el que encuentran la compulsión de expresarlo. La tendencia es sutil y aparentemente inocente, y creo que la mayoría de las personas que lo hacen, nunca le prestan atención. Creo que la mayoría de las personas no han notado el cambio ... pero existe. El diablo está en los detalles.

Este sentimiento del que estoy escribiendo, es la Gratitud. La Gratitud es ese sentimiento o

cualidad de estar agradecido; disposición para mostrar aprecio y para devolver la bondad. Hay muchas palabras que son sinónimo ... reconocimiento, aceptación, admisión, endeudamiento son solo algunas. La mayoría de nosotros estamos muy familiarizados con al menos la idea de la gratitud.

Sin embargo, la tendencia no es tanto en la expresión de la gratitud. Si mis percepciones son

correctas, la expresión de gratitud ha aumentado en los últimos años. Uno solo tiene que buscar en Google la palabra. Hay innumerables sitios web dedicados a la gratitud. Las fuentes religiosas, filosóficas, médicas e incluso científicas alaban la importancia de vivir la vida con gratitud.

Entonces, ¿cuál es esta tendencia? Se encuentra en una sola palabra, una preposición. La

gratitud por definición es un proceso de dos partes. Es estar agradecido por algo o alguien. Esto es gramaticalmente el objeto directo. Decimos que estoy agradecido por mis padres. Estoy agradecido por el buen clima. Estoy agradecido por mi educación, por mi apartamento, la comida en mi estómago, la salud y la libertad que disfruto, etc. Incluso podría estar agradecido por alguna adversidad, sufrimiento o cruz. Este es un reconocimiento por los regalos en mi vida. Pero como los regalos vienen de fuera de mí, para completar el proceso de gratitud, también debo reconocer la fuente de esos regalos y esto requiere otro objeto. En definitiva, debo estar agradecido a alguien.

Digo alguien porque al final todas las cosas tienen su origen en Dios. Puedo estar

agradecido por mi vocación. Pero no me llamé a mi mismo. Fui llamado por otro. Por lo tanto, si deseo estar verdaderamente agradecido, no solo debo reconocer que estoy agradecido por esta vocación, sino que también debo mencionar a quién estoy agradecido. Entonces me doy cuenta de que estoy agradecido no solo con Dios, sino también con mis padres, con mis amigos, directores espirituales, profesores, benefactores y con las innumerables personas que me apoyaron y oraron por mi para estar donde a donde estoy hoy.

Mientras que es bastante común en estos días ver a un atleta apuntando hacia el cielo y

reconocer la fuente de su logro y ningún espectáculo de premios está completo sin las gracias de todos los que hicieron posible este momento ... la tendencia que estoy observando es en La pregunta, “¿Por qué o quién está más agradecido?”. La mayoría no tiene ningún problema en hacer esa lista. Lo que estoy sugiriendo es que realmente nos desafiamos a nosotros mismos no solo por nombrar por qué estamos agradecidos, sino que invertimos el tiempo en identificar a quién estamos más agradecidos por recibir estos regalos. Hacer menos es realmente no expresar la plenitud de la gratitud.

¿Por qué es esto importante? Porque las palabras son importantes y también lo son las

ideas. Como Cristianos estamos perdiendo las guerras culturales. Solo busca en Google la palabra Easter (Pascua) en “Imagen de Google”. Es difícil encontrar una imagen de nuestro Señor entre las imágenes de neón y azucaradas. Cada año, la Navidad parece ser menos sobre la Encarnación, y más sobre el consumismo. Adviento ... bueno, digamos que sería difícil encontrar música de Adviento en la Tiendas. Aunque no es un día santo litúrgico, parece que el Día de Acción de Gracias fue la última festividad que no se había separado de Dios y no hay duda de que los creadores de esta festividad tenían a Dios en mente.

Esta nueva tendencia finalmente permite que esto suceda. La separación de Dios del Día

de Acción de Gracias se ha convertido en una realidad. Porque cuando no reconocemos los extremos duales de nuestra gratitud ... por lo que estamos agradecidos y por quién estamos agradecidos, es posible que una mesa llena de ateos exprese gratitud como lo hacemos nosotros y eso nos debería preocupar.

En las próximas semanas, usaré esta columna para reconocer no solo lo que estoy

agradecido, sino a quién le estoy agradecido. ¡Las listas son largas, porque Dios es bueno todo el tiempo! ¡Feliz día de acción de gracias!
