down to the newborn Jesus. A star leaves its celestial course to shine above the birthplace of the Lord, foreign sages come to do him homage with rare and expensive gifts, and even King Herod senses that
Christ’s true power outshines the importance of his royal throne. One of the first mysteries of our faith is that all this glory and power manifests itself in the simplicity of a stable, in a helpless infant born to two people without rank, traveling on their way to a national census. The glory of the Savior is found in the most common of places, in the most basic surroundings, among the simplest of people. This is Good News, revealing the radical pervasiveness of God’s grace, present to us in the most ordinary and every-day circumstances of our lives. No part of the human experience is too mundane for the presence of God.
■ FIRST READING: It was the shining star that led the three Magi from the east to Jerusalem, thus fulfilling the words of the prophet Isaiah heard in today’s First Reading. In Isaiah’s day, the shinning light signified the dawn of a new period in the nation’s history after the exile, a time of rebuilding and resettling the land. Joy abounds--so much that the human heart cannot contain it and the face glows. Jerusalem’s glory is visible not only to herself, but to all the nations.
■ RESPONSORIAL PSALM 72: Today’s Psalm is a prayer for the king, most fitting on this day when we celebrate the manifestation of the newborn king to those from distant lands who come bearing gifts (see 3rd stanza). Indeed, they represent “every nation,” the Gentile nations of today’s antiphon. Note how the 1st, 2nd, and 4th stanzas are apt descriptions of Jesus’ future ministry.
■ SECOND READING: Throughout his letters, Paul attests to the transforming grace he has personally received. In today’s reading, we hear of another dimension of this grace. It is not solely for himself; it is something with which he is entrusted, something to which he has been given stewardship as he proclaims the Gospel in the world of his day. The fullness of this message is that Gentiles as well as Jews are offered salvation, coheirs and members of the same family of God.
■ THE GOSPEL: It was a commonplace in antiquity that a new star signaled the birth of a new ruler. This shining light led the Magi to seek the newborn king. King Herod, and easily threatened and insecure person, was far from overjoyed at the news. He deceitfully tries to ascertain the child’s whereabouts, so that he might be killed, but a dream instructs the Magi, and the child’s life is spared.

The main source of operating funds for St. Thomas the Apostle Parish is our weekly offertory collection. To assist us in being good stewards of God’s gift of treasure, our collection from last weekend is compared below to the collection the same weekend a year ago. You will notice that the amount is considerably less and has been for quite some time. Although we have been cutting costs for the last several years, our income has also been less which means the expenses for the year may not be met. Please help your Parish to make up the difference by being as generous as your means allow. The information below will be updated weekly.

WHY CHOOSE A CATHOLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION? THE REAL QUESTION IS... WHY NOT?

This occurs and is constantly reinforced not only in classes of religious instruction but throughout the curriculum and extracurriculars. The Gospel’s message is taught in our classrooms every day.
Academics Catholic schools are renowned for academic excellence. Students in Catholic schools consistently score in the top 1/3 on nationally standardized tests.
Community Service Catholic schools exemplify the importance of living the message of the Gospels by helping others. All of our students participate in community service projects.

St. Thomas the Apostle Mission Statement
The Roman Catholic faith community of St. Thomas the Apostle recognizes God’s call to be a sign of His Kingdom in the communities we serve. We respond to this call by:
† Leading people to a deeper relationship with Christ by providing opportunities for spiritual growth, renewal, education, the celebration of the Sacraments, and the worship of God in the sacred liturgy;
† Encouraging a commitment to justice and to service of those in need;
† Promoting good stewardship of our time, talent and treasure;
† Building a community of hospitality and support in the daily living out of Christian ideals by nourishing mutual respect and understanding within our Church, our families, our community, and other faith traditions.
PLANNED GIVING
Here are some other ways You can help St. Thomas the Apostle Church continue its mission of serving God’s people. Give a gift of cash or check for general use or a specific purpose. Give a gift of stocks or bonds. There could be a significant tax advantage to you if there has been appreciation in their value and they are transferred to St. Thomas the Apostle Church.
A bequest in your will assures that your possessions are distributed as you desire. When making a bequest, use the full legal name and address: Saint Thomas the Apostle Church, 60 Byrd Avenue, Bloomfield, NJ 07003
Make St. Thomas the Apostle Church partial or primary beneficiary of a life insurance policy that is no longer needed for family security. Ask the insurance company for the forms necessary to change the beneficiary or to transfer the ownership to St. Thomas the Apostle Church.
WELLNESS MINISTRY
The Wellness Ministry is in need of volunteers. If you would be willing to provide an occasional ride to a doctor’s office, store or other errand to a parishioner, we would love to hear from you. Please leave your name and phone number on the Parish Center phone line 973-338-9190 extension 120.
If you are presently not on our mailing list, receiving envelopes and the various parish mailings, chances are that you are not a registered member of our parish. You are not automatically a registered member because you were married here, if you were brought up here and lived in the parish with your parents–or went to school here. Membership is by formal registration only. Just call the Parish Center at (973) 338-9190 and let us know that you wish to register and the registration form will be mailed to you. Thank you.
