General Information This is a brochure for a trip offered by ROM Travel. ROM Travel is organized by the Royal Ontario Museum’s Department of Museum Volunteers to provide support for the museum. These trips are available exclusively to members of the Royal Ontario Museum. The trip described in this brochure is to the island of Sicily in Italy. This trip will take place from May 4 through May 15, 2020. This trip is operated by Tour East Holidays (Canada) Inc. This travel agency operates on behalf of ROM Travel.

Background Information about this Destination Situated at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, Sicily’s long history has placed it at the heart of great civilizations and often under foreign rule. The Valley of the Temples in Agrigento is the largest and best-preserved collection of ancient Greek buildings outside Greece. In Selinunte, the remains of seven Greek temples are spread across the hills and in Segesta lies a beautifully preserved 2,400 year old Greek temple and amphitheatre. Just off the salt flats on the west coast lies the little island of Mozia with its Carthaginian and Roman ruins. The Normans built the Palatine Chapel in Palermo and the Duomo in Monreale, both with astounding mosaics.

Seaside Cefalu is captivating with its winding, medieval streets and Norman-Arab-Byzantine cathedral. Noto, rebuilt after an earthquake destroyed it in 1693, is a masterpiece of the Neapolitan Baroque. The 300 year old Villa Palagonia in Bagheria is a delight to the imagination with its fantastic statues of imaginary animals, chivalric heroes, dwarfs and mythological creatures. In Ragusa, Donnafugata Castle will give us a glimpse into the opulent life enjoyed by the wealthy in the 17 and 1800s. Sicily’s wealth of archaeological and architectural masterpieces is surrounded by the island’s natural beauty. Taormina, a spectacular resort city with its dramatically situated Greco-Roman theatre, perches high above the crystal-clear blue sea as Mt. Etna looms in the distance.

Lemon and orange groves, vineyards, almond and olive trees all feature in the island’s sun-drenched landscape. Sicilian food has Greek, Spanish, French and Arab influences, but is still very recognizable as a branch of the Italian cuisine we enjoy so much. Savour fresh local ingredients, full-bodied red wines, locally-caught fish and cannoli where it was invented. Join us in discovering the many and varied delights of Sicily!
