ROM 100 ACTIVITY The Wonders of the ROM Scavenger Hunt! 1. You can see a lot of wondrous things in the main staircase inside the ROM’s Crystal. What is the name of that staircase? 2. When the ROM first opened it was 5 different museums in the same building. The names of 3 still grace the doorways in the east wing. Can you name them? 3. Look up! What does it say on the ceiling of the rotunda? 4. Now look down. How many animals are on the floor in the rotunda area? 5. Travel to the European gallery. What place is marked on the map on the floor? 6. When was the ROM founded? When was it enlarged? (Hint: you’ll have to go outside to find the answer to these ones.) 7. A large Southern White Rhino welcomes you into the Schad Gallery of Biodiversity. He used to live at the Toronto Zoo. What’s his name? 8. The ROM collects more than dinosaurs and mummies. In 2012 an artist named El Anatsui made this special artwork just for the ROM. It looks like fabric, but what is it actually made of? 9. Outside the ROM’s theatre sits a large bronze statue of a fine gentleman perched on his chair. Many people rub his foot for good luck (that’s why it’s so shiny!). The man founded one of the earliest retail stores in Canada, and his family was very generous to the ROM. What is his name? 10. One of the faces in this mural is a portrait of the ROM’s first director. The gallery where the mural is mounted is named after him. Who was he? (Hint: his name is carved over the archway beside the mural.) 11. Mounted outside the ROM is a special house for bats that fly in Philosopher’s Walk. The bat house was donated to the ROM and signed by Explorers Club members before being mounted. Look way up! What colour is the bat house? 12. These creatures look a bit like dragons, but they’re not. They’re carved in stone at the entrance to the Chinese gallery. What kind of creature are they? 13. Outside the Teck Suite of Galleries: Earth’s Treasures is a large mineral (you can touch this one!). What kind is it? 14. One of the ROM’s most iconic objects is the moose in the Patrick and Barbara Keenan Gallery of Hands On Biodiveristy. How wide are its antlers? (It’s a world record!) 15. Standing face to face with Futalognkosaurus on the second floor, you’ll notice another animal—a giant fish—behind it. What kind of fish is that?
