Mr Rajesh Agrawal Member (Rolling Stock), Railway Board
ForewordMinistry of Railways
Indian Railways is presently one of the largest railway networks in the world. In terms of railway network, only US, China, and Russia surpass Indian Railways, but in terms of ridership Indian Railways is the leader with an annual ridership of about 8 Billion people. Everyday, 23 million people travel on Indian Railways which is almost equal to the population of the entire Australian continent. Indian Railways has always been a nation builder and remains the socio-economic lifeline of the country.
Given the scale of the Great Indian Railways, it has become necessary for us to seek and adopt innovative technologies in order to solve challenges such as efficient manufacturing of rolling stock, managing and enhancing passenger services, enhancing freight revenue and optimising all operations. Adoption of “Industry 4.0” is a step in this direction. This will bring in world-class quality and enable the Indian Railways to tap the export market. To enhance reliability and availability, “smart” yards are being set up which would predict anomalies long before they actually happen. The Railways is thus pioneering adoption of Maintenance 2.0. It is also on a path to develop Train 20, an intelligent aluminium body coach which will usher in safer, faster and comfortable travel for the citizens of India. While embarking on this journey, the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India for Digital India, Make in India, Start up India, Skill India and Swachh Bharat are being successfully delivered by Indian Railways.
With the Railways on a transformative path, we have a huge task ahead of us. We must embrace technological advancements, while ensuring economic and environmental sustainability. In this innovation-led journey, Indian Railways is working with several industry partners and is keen to work with many more. The industry has shown maturity, will and commitment to grow and excel, time and again.
I am pleased to share this information booklet, with a hope that it would ignite many more such initiatives that translate into scalable deliverables even as the Railways and our industry partners work together to power India’s progress.

Mr Anand ChidambaramChairman, CII Rail Division and Managing Director, Progress Rail
Railways play a crucial role in integrating markets and increasing trade in the country directly as well as indirectly prompting socio-economic activity. Rolling stock that carry passengers and freight, i.e. coaches and wagons, are the physical interface of the railway system with its customers. Continuous enhancements and improvements in rolling stock is key to providing better services to the customers of railways.
The railway industry in India indigenously meets majority of the demands of Indian Railways with regards to maintenance and manufacture of coaches and wagons. The past few years has seen a new thrust on upgrading coaches and wagons and using concepts of IoT, sensorisation and automation to bring in more efficiency. This is essential to enable Indian railway products to become globally relevant. The industry has strong capacity and capability to be a partner to the Indian Railways in the journey of Rolling stock 2.0.
I am pleased to share this information booklet is a useful compendium of all the key initiatives of Indian Railways. The industry has been a key contributor in the success of these initiatives and will continue to work with the Indian Railways to bring more innovative products to the market to serve citizens of India and also enable rail sector exports from India.

SMART Yard
A Smart Yard for rolling stock maintenance will leverage ICT systems, sensors and data analytics to gather rolling stock condition information such as bearing condition, wheel defects, wheel profile, axle temperature etc, before the train reaches the yard for maintenance. It will then use this information for objective fault assessment and proactive staffing, thereby, reducing turn-around time while boosting safety and improving productivity. Smart yard ecosystem consists of:
Sensors: Sensors are deployed on the wayside to collect data from the passing by wagons/ coaches. OMRS (Online Monitoring of Rolling Stock) has its own sensors such as RailBAM, WCM-WILD
Smart Yard Integrated Platform (SIP): SIP will create a central repository of the data. SIP will allow standardization, collation and analysis of the data in a vendor neutral way.Yard officials will obtain a real time comprehensive report of a rake entering the yard. SIP will integrate the insights driven from the sensor data with legacy application of Railways to provide a seamless picture of the rolling stock. With prompt and objective defect detection, maintenance gangs and equipment can be planned and deployed proactively on the arrival of the rake in the yard. With such interventions, the turnaround time of the rakes is expected to reduce, which will lead to enhancement of the revenue for railways, operational efficiency for the yards and quality of life of the railway staff.
Online Monitoring System of Rolling stock System (OMRS) is a way-side inspection system consisting of Acoustic Bearing Detector (ABD) and Wheel Impact Load Detector (WILD). ABD gives an early warning on possible defects in the bearing box, before reaching the stage of hot box whereas WILD system measures the impact of wheel on tracks to automatically identify the defective wheels in Rolling Stock.
ROLLING STOCK 2.0TRANSFORMING TRAINS THROUGH TECHNOLOGY18
SMART Yard
How System works: Acoustic Bearing Detector (ABD) system consists of two microphone array mounted along the track which is optimized to record acoustic signal emitted from the axle box bearings of all type of rolling stock. The acoustic signature emitted by each bearing is anaylsed to identify any possible defects in the bearings. The data is used to generate train wise report of critical alarms exceeding a threshold value of maximum dynamic load and Impact Load Factor. In the case of impact value exceeding threshold limit alarm is generated and communicated to control office for taking corrective action
Status of Implementation of OMRS: A pilot project of TBMS (Track-side Bogie Monitoring System based on Acoustic Bearing Detection system) has been installed at BAKKAS in Lucknow Division of NR. 25 OMRS equipment's have been planned for installation at 20 locations on IR’s network in Phase-I. Out of 25 OMRS systems, 7 installed, 9 are expected to be installed in current FY and remaining systems will be installed in Zonal Railways by 2020.

Targeting the NEXT billion in freight
Increase in the freight carrying capacity from 7 million MT to 1 Billion MT. Following initiatives are being taken by Indian Railways to achieve the same.
Wagon design for new traffic streams:
Bulk, Cement & fly ashtransportation
BCFC wagon with 22.9t axle load was developed as the next generation of bulk fly ash and cement wagon (earlier BCCW wagon) and 2 rakes were procured by IR for developing this new traffic stream. Based on the experience gained during trials of BTAP wagons it was seen that the BTAP wagons are capable of loading up to CC+6t capacity. Also BTAP wagons have some infringement of schedule of dimension of IR particularly in terms of its height. Accordingly, a new wagon has been designed for transportation of fly ash and cement in bulk, BTFC wagon. This wagon has about 10% additional through put compared to BTAP, is fully complying to IR SOD and can be loaded up to CC+8t axle load. The process for proto type of this wagon type has already started.
Steel Coil 1 BFNS 22.9 wagon earlier being used for steel coil transportation had rake through put of about 2800t. Based on the feedback from industry a new wagon named BFNSM has been designed, which has a rake through put 4100t of steel coil per rake. The wagon design was finalised and proto type manufactured in 2014-15. 3 rakes of this type of wagon has already been inducted in service in 2018-19 for transportation of steel coils.
Wagon design for new traffic streams:
Steel Coil 2 After induction of BFNSM wagon, a new requirement was brought out by other steel manufacturers that steel coil carrier wagon should be capable of being loaded not only using by EOT cranes but also by fork lift truck from the side. A new wagon design of BFNV wagons has been developed jointly between RDSO, JSW Steel and JRIL. The proto type of this wagon is expected to be manufactured in 2019. This wagon is expected to transport cold rolled coils, which are conventionally smaller in size compared to hot rolled coil and as such number of coils loaded per wagon would be higher, which can be accommodated easily in BFNV wagon. BFNV wagons also have the facility of removable cover on the wagon so as to protect the CRC coils, used by automobile and FMCG sector, during transit. The proto type wagon is expected to be completed by end of December 2019.
ROLLING STOCK 2.0TRANSFORMING TRAINS THROUGH TECHNOLOGY20
Road Railers Beyond Multi model containerised traffic, the concept of road railer had been under development. During 2016-17 the sanction for operation of these trains up to 75kmph in loaded condition and 80kmph in empty condition was issued. The commercial operation of these trains started in 2018-19 between Melpakkam near Chennai on SR and Palwal near New Delhi on NR. This design consists of a road railer vehicle, which can carry a container on a road railer from customer premises to the railway yard. After arrival in railway yard, the trailer itself climbs on to railway wheels and gets converted into a wagon automatically. 50 such units get coupled together and can move as a single train to the other end where the train gets dismantled into 50 trailers.
Parcel Wagon Parcel traffic currently moves using VPU/VPH type ICF design coaches, which have limited volumetric and tonnage capacity and at the same time require much frequent maintenance attention similar to the other coaching stock. RDSO has finalised the design of new parcel wagon, which has a volumetric loadable capacity of 180Cu.m against 145Cum being available in VPU/VPH coaches. The proto type manufacture of this type is completed in 2015-16. In 2018-19 the oscillation trial of these wagons have been successfully conducted up to speeds 110kmph in empty/loaded condition. The design of this wagon is expected to be introduced commercially once the detailed commercial arrangement about PCC and rating is finalised, which is currently under consideration in Commercial Dte.
Private Parcel Wagon design Another private design proposal for new parcel wagon with volumetric loadable capacity 205 Cum is also under consideration currently at RDSO. The design proponents are currently awaiting the outcome of deliberations of the commercial aspects of this traffic stream.
