AIR-KINGIn 2016 Rolex introduced the Oyster Perpetual Air-King, a watch thatperpetuates the aeronautical heritage of the original Rolex Oyster. Thenew Air-King, with a 40 mm case in Oystersteel, features a distinctiveblack dial with a combination of large 3, 6 and 9 numerals marking thehours and a prominent minute scale for navigational time readings. Thedial bears the name Air-King in the same lettering that was designedspecially for the model in the 1950s. The Air-King carries the SuperlativeChronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015, which ensuressingular performance on the wrist.

A HOMAGE TO AVIATIONThe new Air-King epitomizes Rolex’s privileged ties with the world ofaviation during its golden age in the 1930s. It was a period whenspectacular progress in aircraft performance constantly expandedhumanity’s capacity to conquer the skies, and led to the introduction oflong-distance flights. One of the pioneers of this era, English aviatorCharles Douglas Barnard, set a number of flight records. Of the Oyster, hesaid: “The peculiar qualities of this Rolex watch render it eminentlysuitable for flying purposes and I propose to use it on all my long-distanceflights in the future”.

In 1933, Oyster watches accompanied the Houston Expedition as it madethe first-ever flight over Mount Everest at an altitude exceeding 10,000metres (33,000 feet) in extreme weather conditions. In 1934, OwenCathcart-Jones and Ken Waller made a return voyage from London toMelbourne (Australia) in record time with a twin-engine De HavillandComet, using a Rolex Oyster as their on-board chronometer. Today’s newAir-King pays tribute to the pioneers of flight and the Oyster’s role in theepic story of aviation.

THE OYSTER CASE,SYMBOL OFWATERPROOFNESSThe Air-King’s Oyster case, guaranteed waterproof to a depth of100 metres (330 feet), is a paragon of robustness. Itscharacteristically shaped middle case is crafted from a solidblock of particularly corrosion-resistant Oystersteel. The flutedcase back is hermetically screwed down with a special tool thatallows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement. Fittedwith the Twinlock double waterproofness system, the windingcrown screws down securely against the case. The crystal ismade of virtually scratch-proof sapphire. The waterproof Oystercase provides optimum protection for the Air-King’s high-precision movement and is also fitted with a shield to protectagainst magnetic fields, a feature of pilots’ watches of the past.

PERPETUAL CALIBRE 3131The Air-King is equipped with calibre 3131, a self-winding mechanicalmovement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Itsarchitecture, manufacturing quality and innovative features make itsingularly precise and reliable. The oscillator, the true heart of the watch, has a blue Parachrom hairspring patented and manufactured by Rolex inan exclusive alloy. Insensitive to magnetic fields, the Parachrom hairspringoffers great stability in the face of temperature variations and remains upto 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. Itis equipped with a Rolex overcoil, ensuring its regularity in any position. The escapement features a paramagnetic escape wheel made from anickel-phosphorus alloy produced via UV-LiGA (micromanufacturing byelectroforming). Calibre 3131 is equipped with a self-winding modulefeaturing a Perpetual rotor and offers a power reserve of approximately 48hours.

7

SOLID-LINK BRACELET ANDEASYLINKThe Air-King is fitted on a solid-link Oyster bracelet in Oystersteel with afolding Oysterclasp. This bracelet features the ingenious Rolex-patentedEasylink rapid extension system that allows the wearer to easily increasethe bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, for additional comfort in anycircumstance.

SUPERLATIVECHRONOMETERCERTIFICATIONThe Air-King is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certificationredefined by Rolex in 2015. This exclusive designation testifies that thewatch has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex inits own laboratories according to its own criteria, which exceedwatchmaking norms and standards. The certification applies to the fullyassembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing its superlativeperformance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex SuperlativeChronometer after casing is of the order of −2/+2 seconds per day, ormore than twice that required of an official chronometer. The SuperlativeChronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with everyRolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.

10

SUPERLATIVECHRONOMETERThe green seal accompanying every Rolex watch is a symbol of its statusas a Superlative Chronometer. This exclusive designation attests that ithas successfully undergone a series of specific final controls by Rolex inits own laboratories according to its own criteria, in addition to the officialCOSC certification of its movement. This unique testing of thechronometric precision of the cased-up movement, as well as of thewatch’s waterproofness, self-winding and power reserve, pushes backthe boundaries of performance and makes Rolex the benchmark forexcellence in mechanical watches.
