The Bungalows Resort, located at thestart of the Florida Keys is also an idealgateway to an archipelago of over 100

miles of highway connected cays, deepwater fishing, and the mangroves of theEverglades, making for adventure-filled

holidays for outdoor enthusiasts.

With a choice of either an ocean fronting or gardenbungalow, we chose the latter for its seclusion andlush tropical foliage. Its enclosed setting has anoutdoor shower and soak tub along with woodendeck making it perfect for lounging in the day andromantic candle lit dining at night.

Set on some 12 acres of beach front, thebicycles assigned to our bungalow were perfect forexploring this all-inclusive adults-only oasis. Our firsttreat on property was to cycle to the spa with its Asianthemed treatments and black bamboo growing in aZen garden. Back in the bungalow we lounged the lateafternoon away in our soak tub withflutes of champagne in hand until thestars began to show above as the sun fellaway and dusk settled over the horizon.For dinner that evening we headed to

the Beach House, a 2 storey thatched roof buildinghousing the main dining area, with the Living Roomcommon area on the upper level where we had predinner cocktails. We capped the evening at the finedining Bogie and Bacall’s where we savoured a 6 courseseafood meal with a selection of our favourite wines.

Returning to our bungalow by golf cart, theproperty was illuminated with the soft glow of lightsalong the pathways, swaying palm trees, and Zenthemed statues, making for a romantic setting to finishour evening.

The next day, waking up to brilliant sunshine, westarted our day with breakfast at Fish Tales restaurantwith its sweeping views of the ocean that beckoned tous with its cobalt blue and rippling waves. Checkingwith the snorkel shop we had a wide range of seaventures to choose from: the John Pennekamp CoralReef State Park; Spiegel Grove — sunken ship toexplore; Harry Harris Park and Beach; CrocodileLake National Wildlife Refuge; and the EvergladesNational Park. We chose a snorkelling trip on a powerboat which took us past mangroves and bird-filledislets near Islamorada and Duck Key (that’s aboutmid away to Key West), until we reached the captain’sfavourite underwater playground. Here we donnedour snorkels, goggles and fins then dived into the clearazure water, to view a marine wonderland of corals,fish, and sea wrecks. Lunch and sunbathing followedon the deck of our boat as we cranked up the volumeto our favourite hits, singing along as we made our wayback to the Bungalows Resort on a leisurely route toenjoy scenic coastal vistas and beautiful homes dottingthe cays.

Drunk from the sun during the day’s outing, onreturning to the Bungalows Resort we cooled off inour outdoor shower and slipped into fluffy bathrobesand slippers while downing refreshing cider andfizzies stocked in our room’s mini bar and fridge.With lots of fun pictures to share with kids and familyeager to know details of our long weekend break, weselected the best highlights of the day’s outing anduploaded to our Instagram accounts which started achain of oohs and ahhs and like comments.

Pulling ourselves away from the digitalchatter, we headed for a toes in the sanddining experience at Sea Señor beach-front restaurant with its zesty Mexicancuisine under a canopy of pepper lightsand swaying palm tree fronds. Here we

dined on ceviche, fresh catch of the day, finishingwith a Mexican chocolate mousse.

The following morning we greeted sunrise on abeachfront facing lawn with a series of stretches andposes, then after a light breakfast we hit the gymfitted with Peloton equipment. After all that exerciseour senses were elevated, and the air smelt saltier, theskies looked bluer, and the ripples of the ocean wavesmore playful, enticing us back to the beach and water.

Selecting a pair of kayaks we paddled the calm baywaters while hugging the coast line, eventuallycatching up with S.S. Rum Runner, the Resort’s Tikiboat — a motorised floating bar — which sailsoffshore to nearby cays stocked with lots ofbeverages on board, accommodating about 6 guestsat a time. The bartender offered us some of hissignature rum punch. We cheered his guests on boardand then continued our paddling to a nearby cay,home to dozens of egrets.

Back on land, and having built up an appetite atsea we headed to Largo Larry's food truck on theResort for a hearty serving of burgers, fries, and icecream, which we enjoyed in a pillow filled cabana bythe secluded Zen swimming pool.

This our final evening called for a special treat.We joined a barbecue dinner with live music onCoconut Beach at the far end of the Resort. Withtables and chairs on the sandy shore, the starry nightwas filled with the smell of succulent roasted porkand grilled steaks, which we washed down withdraught beers and finished off with grandma’s applepie. Looking into each other’s eyes we broke intosmiles then laughter, as the setting took us back to ouryouthful high school days where we attended countyfairs in the summer on long balmy nights.
