Introduction
• No federal guidance for cannabis testing in US.• The NJ Department of Health (NJDOH) Medicinal
Marijuana Program was established to implement the law, develop and enforce the regulations.
• Medical cannabis has been approved for use in a number of states, including NJ.• The NJ Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act (Senate
Bill, No. 119, the Act, N.J.S.A. 26:6I-1 et seq) was signed into law on January 18, 2010.

Role Of The NJ State Lab in MMP
To assure: • Potency compliance: < 10 %
Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ-9-THC) in the raw plant material
• Free from pesticides, toxic heavy metals, and mycotoxins
NJ Department of Health
Specific Activities Conducted by the NJ State Lab
Perform testing for cannabis, heavy metals, pesticides and mycotoxins.
Collect samples from the growing centers for testing.

• NJDA cooperates with NJ Department of Health to perform Mycotoxins analyses for medical marijuana plant materials
• The tests are aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1, and G2) and Ochratoxin A
• High Performance Liquid Chromatograph with Fluorescence Detection

Summary Results of Cannabis Analysis(October 2012 – April 2016)
• Total number of samples: 635• Total cultivars: 111• Total strain types: 65• All of the products tested are in
compliance with the regulations.

What’s New?• New types of cannabis
products have been proposed by a growing center in NJ.
• Testing plan proposed by the grower• Testing at their own lab• Other testing in the labs in other states• Sharing testing plan, results and any
related documents with NJDOH Hightimes.com
NJ Department of Health
What Is the Role of NJDOH for the New MM Products?
• In discussion: Oversight role only ?• Should all of the target analytes tested for the
plant material be required for testing for the new products?
• Should we conduct QA tests??• Should we establish and validate the methods for
the new products?• Do we have enough resources for conducting the
new tests?
