“Stand Up to Cancer” National Televised Fundraiser Integrating the Advocate Perspective into the SU2C Research Funding Process Advocate Advisory Council Stand Up To Cancer will bring together the best and brightest members of the cancer resear ch and advocacy communities to work in a way that will transcend the barriers that have traditionally inhibited creativity and collaboration. Whether they are survivors, patients or family members, advocates provide a broad perspective of disease related issues important to their constituency. Advocates understand what cancer research means to patients and their survival and their quality of life. Advocates will sit side-by-side with the scientists so their perspectives will be integrated into the direction of the research we fund. SU2C Advocate Advisory Council o Leaders of about 25 key advocacy organizations will be invited to join o Chairperson elected by majority vote of the Council o Speak about the importance of cancer research o Serve as a resource for the Stand Up To Cancer project by suggesting ways to enhance this national initiative o Formulate an advocacy action plan for public awareness o Annually elect two members to serve on the Blue Ribbon Scientific Advisory Committee o Annually elect two members to serve on Innovative Grants Subcommitte e o Recommend advocates to serve on Dream Teams o Have the opportunity to attend the SU2C television program on September 5th o Link to SU2C website and vice versa “Blue Ribbon” Scientific Advisory Committee o About fifteen highly accomplished, senior laboratory researchers and physician-scientists o  Two advocates, elected to serve one-year terms by the SU2C Advocate Advisory Council o Determine the most promising scientific areas (particular organ sites and other specialized research areas) for potential funding of Dream Teams o Select Dream Team Leaders and approve Dream Team membership o Review and approve Dream Team research proposals, milestones, and budgets o Review Dream Teams’ progress and make recommendations regarding adjustments in the funding (e.g., continuatio n, reduction) of individua l Dream  Teams o Review the recommendations of the Innovative Grants Subcommittee(s) and select a balanced portfolio of innovative funds Criteria for selection: In order to effectively and productively take part in the Stand up to Cancer Research Funding Process, it is vital that the advocates are not only leaders in a national organization, but also have an understanding of key concepts of cancer research. • Hold a senior leadership position in a national organization

• Have a demonstrated impact on cancer research through policy advocacy, research

advocacy and/or community outreach

• Represent a constituency of patients, survivors, or others in the cancer community

• Have experience serving on grant panels/study sections that award funds for cancer

research (e.g., National Cancer Institute, DoD Congressionally Directed MedicalResearch Programs, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, California Breast ResearchProgram) or as a patient advocate on a cooperative group, SPORE or other advisorygroup

• In addition, high priority will be given to those individuals who have successfully

completed special training for advocates (e.g., the AACR’s Scientist<->SurvivorProgram, Consumer Advocates in Research and Related Activities CARRA training of the National Cancer Institute, Project LEAD ,or an equivalent program).
