Please note, we are currently carrying out a review of the museum collections. During this period therefore there will be a particular emphasis on this work. Tasks will include:

• Ongoing re-evaluation of National Lottery Heritage Fund supported Collections Review in response to ever changing Covid environment.

• Reviewing and making decisions on recommendations for disposal, according to the Museums Association code of ethics.

• Uploading Modes and ensuring full documentation of items disposed. • Reorganising stores and rehoming of artefacts. • Organising expert assessment of Archaeology collections and lead on

decision process on any items selected for disposal. • Writing up end of project report • Creation of disposal action plan and future storage needs document to

feed into our Heritage Strategy. Expectation and Outcomes of this Role:- You will be expected to manage the museum collections through responsible collecting, implementing documentation procedures and ensuring the preservation and conservation of the collections. The outcome of this will be to create a cross-county museum offer to encourage a sense of pride and community identity whilst identifying opportunities for arts and culture development, whilst ensuring we have a resilient and sustainable service. You will be guided by the Museums and Arts Delivery plan and your outcomes and outputs will link into this plan. Your responsibilities are to:- Manage staff, volunteers, students and apprentices

Provide line management for Custodians at Monmouth Museum, Collections Volunteers at Abergavenny and Collections Review Assistants.

Plan and monitor output of work programmes supporting curatorial and collections care work for all staff, volunteers, students and apprentices as appropriate.

Manage the museum collections:

To oversee and carry out the acquisition, documentation and care of

collections. This will include acquiring, developing, expanding and disposing

of the museum collections.

To oversee the documentation and recording of essential information for

audit, access and interpretation purposes.

Ensuring our collections are relevant to strategic initiatives e.g. Future

Generations Act, Health and Wellbeing agendas and the National Curriculum.

To take responsibility for all activities relating to the loan of artefacts by us e.g. when lending to other organistations etc

Interpret the Museum Collections

To assist the Community Museum Curator to devise, develop and organise

exhibitions to include the sourcing of appropriate objects to enhance the

cultural and recreational functions of the museums; Assists with carrying out

the tasks involved with implementing this programme, from conception to

installation and dismantling.

To provide advice on care of collections on display and when being used by

the public.

Collections Care and Monitoring

To maintain capacity to carry out collections care and monitoring tasks develop and deliver training for staff and volunteers in object handling, basic preventative conservation and specialist packing.

Ensure adequate housing of the museum collections by maintaining a system of regular checks upon the museum premises to monitor temperature, humidity, light levels and pest levels. Interpret result and take remedial action.

Regularly inspect individual exhibits in store, on display or at the time of acquisition, and advise upon the need for conservation.

Maintain appropriate records of monitoring procedures and results to enable

assessment of conservation needs.

Assist with maintaining and implementing security measures to protect the

collections.

Oversee the Museums Service ‘Disaster Planning’ process, researching, compiling and revising the associated documentation, equipment, contacts, agreements and staff training

Directly source and order conservation materials and equipment (including related storage and display items) subject to budgetary and procurement guidelines

Conservation

Carry out basic interventive conservation where appropriate

Identifies the need for the use of outside specialists to undertake conservation

processes beyond the competence/capacity of the post-holder.

Maintain adequate records of all conservation work undertaken.

Ensure all work sent to external conservators is carried out to the required

standard, to budget and on time

Research and Advice

Advise Museums and Arts Manager on the use of outside contractors for

specialised conservation work. This includes conservation of the museums

historic buildings and monuments in conjunction with Property Services as

well as collections. Maintains appropriate records and contacts concerning

availability and performance of such contractors.

Advise upon the specification of museum development projects, drawing up

conservation briefs and specifications for the control of environmental

conditions, storage, display and exhibition provision, identifying suppliers and

obtaining quotations as required

Maintain awareness of current, local, national and international museum

services and maintain awareness of good practice in the field of collections

care and management, seeking advice as appropriate.

Maintain up-to-date information on the development of techniques, materials

and equipment for collections and historic buildings.

Contribute to the museums’ public enquiry service, assisting with identification

where appropriate.

Community Engagement

To work with our communities to provide access to and to participate in the

care and development of the collections

Assist the Community Museums Curator in museum activities and events

aimed at promoting public understanding and enjoyment of the museums and

the collections.

Explore our relationship with the Monmouth Field and History Society and represent the museum when appropriate.

Administrative duties

To gather and compile information for monitoring and compliance purpose with regards to standards and performance, in particular in relation to the Museums Delivery Plan.

Assist with, and directly carry out when appropriate, the preparation of grant

applications

Other duties

Assisting the Museums and Arts Manager by contributing to team management including supporting staff, students, volunteers and contractors

To take responsibility for retaining Museum Accreditation, working in particular with the Community Museums Curator but also with assistance from other staff and volunteers

Gweithio gyda’r tîm amgueddfeydd i gyflwyno cynnig amgueddfeydd ar draws y sir i annog ymdeimlad o falchder a hunaniaeth gymunedol

Dylid nodi ein bod yn cynnal adolygiad o gasgliadau’r amgueddfeydd ar hyn o bryd. Oherwydd hynny bydd pwyslais neilltuol ar y gwaith hwn yn ystod y cyfnod yma. Bydd tasgau’n cynnwys:

Goruchwylio a gweithredu caffael, dogfennu a gofal casgliadau. Bydd hyn yn cynnwys caffael, datblygu, ehangu a gwaredu â chasgliadau’r amgueddfeydd.

Goruchwylio dogfennu a chofnodi gwybodaeth hanfodol ar gyfer dibenion archwilio, mynediad a dehongli.

Sicrhau fod ein casgliadau yn berthnasol i gynlluniau strategol e.e. Deddf Cenedlaethau’r Dyfodol, agendau Iechyd a Llesiant a’r Cwricwlwm Cenedlaethol.

Bod yn gyfrifol am bob gweithgaredd yn gysylltiedig â benthyca arteffactau gennym e.e. wrth fenthyca i sefydliadau eraill ac yn y blaen.

Dehongli casgliadau’r amgueddfeydd

Cynorthwyo’r Curadur Amgueddfeydd Cymunedol i lunio, datblygu a threfnu

arddangosfeydd i gynnwys cyrchu gwrthrychau priodol i hybu swyddogaethau

diwylliannol a hamdden yr amgueddfeydd. Cynorthwyo gyda chyflawni’r

tasgau’n gysylltiedig â gweithredu’r rhaglen hon, o’r cysyniad i’r gosod a’r

datgymalu.

Rhoi cyngor ar ofal casgliadau pan fyddant yn cael eu harddangos ac yn cael

eu defnyddio gan y cyhoedd.

Gofal a monitro casgliadau

Cadw capasiti i gynnal tasgau gofal a monitro casgliadau, datblygu a chyflwyno hyfforddiant i staff a gwirfoddolwyr wrth drafod gwrthrychau, cadwraeth ataliol sylfaenol a phacio arbenigol.

Sicrhau y caiff y casgliadau amgueddfeydd eu lletya’n ddigonol drwy gynnal system o wiriadau rheolaidd ar safleoedd amgueddfeydd i fonitro tymheredd, lleithder, lefelau golau a lefelau pla. Dehongli’r canlyniadau a chymryd camau i unioni.
