General Meeting Dallas Gem and Mineral Society

10205 Plano Rd. Suite 104 Dallas, TX 75238

June 21, 2016

Call to Order: 7:05 p.m.

Officer Reports:

Diana Case, President

Two visitors were introduced to the membership. Diana pointed out rock samples that members had brought to share. It was announced that the following Saturday would be a cleaning day in the shop, in light of the fact that we have a new insurance com-pany and they have notified us that they will be making a premises inspection in the near future.

Jim Senseman, 1st V.P. (Programs)

Jim reminded the membership that it will soon be time to form a nomination committee for the fall officer election. He said that we need “new blood” and “younger board members.” The board positions are neither difficult nor time consuming…and you get to know your club and its members better. He asked all to consider offering their name in nomination. Jim also asked for (and got) a volunteer for next month’s presentation.

David Pirnie, 2nd V.P. (Lapidary Shop)

2 or 3 pieces of equipment were recently donated to our rock shop. The shop has been much busier the last two months. An in-surance inspection is imminent, so we need volunteers to clean up the shop this Saturday. There is a new blade on the 24” saw that is running very well.

Jack Sorrow, Treasurer

Diana reported on Jack’s behalf that the club remains solvent. Show money is coming in with vendor registrations. The shop is now generating more money.

Burt Breedlove, Secretary

The names of recently purchased member name tags were read and several were picked up by members.

Darrell Harrison, Show Chair

We need to generate publicity NOW for the Annual Show in November. The Boy Scouts and the Dallas Zoo are good sources of show attendees and need to be contacted right away.

Meeting minutes cont.

Mike Russell, 6th Member

Mike pointed out that social networks on the Internet are excellent opportunities to advertise our

Show. Many neighborhoods have a social site that can be appropriate places to put Show notices. Also club, church and other organization sites may be OK with the posting of Show notices. Be sure to check that such postings are allowed.

Presentation: Darrell Harrison did a presentation on the hazards of field expeditions in the summer. Top among the dangers are snakes. Did you know that not all vipers have arrow-shaped heads and some non-venomous snakes imitate venomous snake shapes and actions to fool other predators. The lesson is: stay away from all snakes. It is a good idea to put a bungee cord around your pants leg at the ankle and do not cuff your pants. Also carry some kind of snake stick in case you have an unintended close encounter.

An interesting aside was: did you know that there are no poisonous snakes? Poison must be ingested (eaten) and all snake meats can be eaten, so none are poisonous. But many snakes (copperheads, rattlers, cotton mouths to name a few local ones) are venomous! The venom is injected with their teeth.

Other hazards discussed were the Texas tarantula hawk wasp (especially in SW Texas), spiders (esp. to those with an allergy), other small animals that may carry rabies (don’t try to feed the varmints), mosquitoes and other flying insects (carry bug spray / wipe it onto small children) and of course, sun and heat (wear a hat & long sleeves, use sun screen and carry water).

Old Business: None

New Business: None Raffle: $55.00

Adjourn: It was moved, seconded and carried that the meeting be adjourned at 8:32 p.m.

July Birthstones

July Birthstone

here’s no better way to demonstrate your love than by giving a ruby in cele-bration of a July birthday. Ru-bies arouse the senses, stir the imagi-nation, and are said to guarantee health, wisdom, wealth and success in love.

Ruby is a variety of the gems species corundum. It is harder than any natu-ral gemstone except diamond, which means a ruby is durable enough for everyday wear.

Fine-quality ruby is extremely rare, and the color of the gem is most important to its value. The most prized color is a medium or medium-dark vivid red or slightly purplish red. If the gem is too light or has too much purple or orange, it will be called a fancy-color sapphire.

Learn more about birthstones or find an AGS jeweler in your area.

From the Prez

Another month has gone by, can you believe it? We are now in July; all the stories are true, time flies when you are having fun. We are coming to mid-year and we need to start thinking ahead for a couple of things.

One is the Elections. Please consider putting your name in the hat for one of the positions.

Jim, our 1st VP would like to have someone take this position and he will help with his suggestions.

Our Vendor Chairman, Darrell, wants to have someone to train for the 2017 show. Neither position takes a lot of time over the year. But does require time around the show dates.

Bert, our Secretary would like to split the position and have one do just the meetings notes and updating the membership lists. Bert will keep the weekly news blasts. So this will be ½ a position, LOL. There is work twice a month for the Board meeting and the General meeting, along with coordination with the Treasure for new applications and updates for the membership list.

The President, 2nd VP, and Treasure are also up for consideration, but I have not heard if we need to fill the positions at this time.

The other thing we need to be thinking about is the Show itself. We will be posting a sign up list for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday positions that will be needed.

They will include, but not limited to, the following:

Friday – getting a U-Haul, loading it with all the rocks and supplies, driving to the venue and unloading. Setting up our parts and helping the vendors set up theirs.

Saturday – putting finishing touches on silent auction, kid's corner and front desk and information desk. We will need people at all locations for the entire day. I have split up day so we can take 4 hours at a time in the sign up. Many of us will be there for all hours but we do need help for all locations

Sunday – same as Saturday AND loading up getting the U-Haul again, loading it up and taking it to the storage shed after close.

So please check the shop board and sign up, it should be up the first week in July.

Happy Hounding.

Metal Smithing Class. By Mike Andrews

I have been teaching a class in what I call “Metal Smithing”. It teaches basic applique metal working for jewel-ry. The tools and materials for the class are furnished with the exception of a small cabochon suitable for a ring. I cover what tools are needed and how they are used for simple jewelry work. The steps are

Hammer Texturing Cutting using Jeweler’s Saw Shaping, Bending, and Design Soldering, Flux, and Pickling Polishing, Burnishing, and Patina

We start out using copper as it is much cheaper to use than silver or gold. Copper is a little harder to work than silver but everything you learn will be applicable to most Jewelry metal working. Even though pendants and bracelets are a little bit easier to make, our 2 projects will be about making rings. (all steps learned will apply to all of these items)

The first piece is simply a textured flat band. A pattern will be made in the copper with a hammer and small anvil then cut, soldered and shaped. The second project is a “platform ring” using your cab. You make a bezel to fit the cab, a platform for it to set on, and a band to complete the ring. This process will give you a grasp of the process involved in this type of metal jewelry.
