Welcome to the Department of Education Each year, more than 600 students graduate from Roehampton having successfully completed an award leading to Qualified Teaching Status. They undertake a journey of discovery that opens their hearts and minds to a value-based philosophy of education. The journey is emotional, physically and intellectually demanding and, for the right person, well worth undertaking. We offer an undergraduate course, postgraduate courses with M-level credits, a professional (graduate) certificate, and full- and part-time routes, to meet the needs of all applicants. Students join us straight from sixth form, following completion of a first degree, as career changers looking for new direction or after raising a family.

Whichever pathway you choose, you can be confident in our commitment to excellence in teaching and research, which is responsive to policy initiatives and which provides a positive learning experience. We combine support and challenge to deliver high-quality professional initial teacher education that prepares students to become outstanding classroom teachers. Outstanding staffAll tutors have extensive teaching experience in schools, which means that our courses are based on the reality of the classroom and the education system. Many members of academic staff are at the cutting edge of research in teacher education, and Roehampton is home to Research Centres in beliefs, rights and values in education; creativity, development and learning; early childhood; and policy, pedagogy and professionalism.

Excellent school-based trainingStudents benefit from our partnership arrangement with over 500 schools, which range from larger inner-city to smaller suburban schools. Placements in these schools prepare you for teaching in different settings and help you decide where you would like to teach in the future.

Students prepared for employmentThe University has an excellent record of student achievement. In our most recent survey 96% of our students had gained teaching employment soon after graduating. Many of our graduates go on to become head teachers and senior staff in schools.

Strong student supportAt Roehampton we know that teaching is a rewarding but demand-ing career and that there are times when even the best students will face challenges. Every student benefits from the strong support system in the Department of Education as well as having individual named tutors to whom they can turn for advice and support. During school placements, students also receive strong support, advice and regular feedback from school colleagues and Roehampton staff.

Teaching in faith schoolsOpportunities exist for BA Primary Education or PGCE students wishing to experience teaching in Church of England (Anglican), Catholic, Jewish, Muslim and Greek Orthodox schools with which Roehampton works closely. We also offer a Catholic Certificate in Religious Studies, which is essential for all those wishing to teach in Catholic schools.

Choosing

a course

Becoming a primary teacherThe most direct route to becoming a primary teacher is to apply for the BA (Hons) Primary Education degree, which includes an elective subject specialism.

It is also possible to undertake a BA/BSc degree and then apply for a full-time or part-time PGCE Primary. Degrees offered at Roehampton that are of particular interest to potential teachers include the BA/BSc in Education and the BA/BSc in Early Childhood Studies either as single subjects, combined with each other, or combined with a subject relevant to the primary curriculum. These programmes have a lighter timetable and allow for practical experience of working with children.

Becoming a secondary teacherYou must first obtain a BA/BSc or equivalent in any relevant subject (or the BA/BSc Education combined with a National Curriculum subject as the major component). While completing your first degree, you may apply to enrol on a one-year PGCE Secondary course to start after you graduate. We also welcome applications from those who have already graduated with relevant work or other experience. If you have any doubts about the relevance of your degree subject(s) or equivalent qualification, contact us for advice.

BA (Hons) Primary EducationFor whom is this programme intended? Those who want to study for a first degree and want to be primary school teachers.

What age children can graduates teach? Graduates of this programme are qualified to teach children across the full primary age range, but with a specialism in one of two age phases: Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 (3–7 year old children) or Key Stage 2 (7–11 year old children).

Length of programme: three years

Time spent in schools: a minimum of 24 weeks (120 days)

Number of places on programme: 277

Entry requirements (summary):

n 300 points are preferred, to include a minimum of two A-levels at grade C or above, or vocational A-levels, or equivalent

n GCSE English, mathematics and a science at grade C, or equivalent

Course summary

You will undertake university-based modules that include Teaching and Learning, the study of the National Curriculum Core and Foundation Subjects, religious education, an introduction to modern foreign languages in the primary school and special and inclusive education. You will also have a period of school-based experience in each academic year and will be able to develop an elective specialism from the subjects listed below.

PGCE Primary (full-time)For whom is this programme intended? Those who hold a relevant degree or equivalent qualification, have relevant experience and want to be primary school teachers.

What age children can graduates teach? Graduates of this programme are qualified to teach children across the full primary age range, but with a specialism in one of two age phases: Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 (3–7 year old children) or Key Stage 2 (7–11 year old children).

Length of programme: 39 weeks full-time

Time spent in schools: 90 days minimum across the programme in total

Number of places on programme: 218

n An Honours degree (at 2.2 or above), or equivalent

Course summary

In your university-based studies you will develop the knowledge and skills required of primary and early years teachers. You will gain a holistic understanding of a wide range of curricular areas, including English, mathematics, science, art and design, design and technology, geography, history, information and communication technology, music, physical education and religious education teaching.

The practical placements in schools provide substantial classroom experience appropriately staged throughout the year. During the placements, you will progress from partici-pant observer, via support teacher and sharing teacher, to lead teacher.

PGCE Primary (part-time)For whom is this programme intended? Those who hold a relevant degree or equivalent qualification, have relevant experience and want to become primary school teachers.

What age children can graduates teach? Graduates of this programme are qualified to teach children across the full primary age range, but with a specialism in teaching children between three and seven years of age.

Length of programme: five part-time terms from January 2011 to July 2012. Two days each week are spent in the University.

Time spent in schools: 90 days minimum across the programme in total

Number of places on programme: 19 (early application advisable)

Entry requirements: same as PGCE Primary (full-time)

Course summary

The PGCE Primary (part-time) programme offers an exciting and flexible opportunity to spread studies over a longer period of time. The part-time programme shares the rationale for, and approach to, teacher development that underpins the full-time PGCE programme, detailed on the previous page.

Course structure

The part-time programme runs across five school terms:

n Year 1 — spring and summer 2011

n Year 2 — autumn 2011, spring and summer 2012.

You are expected to attend the University two days a week, 9.30am–4pm. The programme also includes a minimum of 90 days’ school experience organised in two main blocks. Full-time commitment is required for the school experience. On school experience days expect minimum hours of 8am–5pm.

The course was the ideal structure for me as it involved two days a week at university, which left enough time for my other commitments: family, part-time work and study.

PGCE SecondaryFor whom is this programme intended? Those who already have a relevant degree or equivalent qualification and want to be secondary school teachers.

What age children can graduates teach? Graduates of this programme are quali-fied to teach across the full age-range in secondary schools.

Length of programme: one year full-time

Time spent in schools: 24 weeks throughout the year

Number of places on programme: 210+

Entry requirements (summary):

n An Honours degree, or equivalent, related to the needs of the programme and the subject specialism applied for

n GCSE English and mathematics grade C, or equivalent

Course summary

The programme has two components: university-based studies and school-based experience. University-based work is mainly subject-focused but is supported by a module of Professional Studies common to all subjects; this is taught in mixed-sub-ject groups. The time spent in the University also allows the sharing of experiences with other student teachers. School-based work includes further training in schools and observation of experienced teachers at work, team teaching and working with small groups before taking responsibility for the teaching of whole classes.

The PGCE course at Roehampton is structured in such a way that you don’t feel like you’ve been thrown in at the deep end when you start your first school placement. The course allows you to discuss and practise key elements of teaching before stepping into a classroom and the course leaders are extremely supportive during both your university and placements blocks.

The foundation of university life is the academic experience, but there’s more than study on offer at Roehampton. You’ll be studying only 30 minutes away from the centre of London, one of the world’s most exciting and cosmopolitan cities, and the areas close to Roehampton, such as Putney, Kingston, Hammersmith and Richmond, provide a wide range of social and cultural experiences. Our campus also has a thriv-ing social scene, with regular club nights, and many societies to join and sports to take part in.

SportsThere are many opportunities for students to take part in sport at Roehampton, whether it’s competing as a member of one of the University’s many clubs, or using our excellent gym and other sport facilities.

Tuition fees (BA Primary Education and PGCE students)Full-time UK and EU students: the tuition fee in 2010/11 is £3,290 a year and will be subject to a small rise in 2011/12. If you take out a tuition fee loan from the Student Loans Company, you do not have to repay the loan until you have left university.

Full-time international (non-EU) students: the tuition fee in 2010/11 is £9,599 a year and will be subject to a small rise in 2011/12.

Part-time UK and EU students: the tuition fee in 2010/11 is £288 per ten-credit module but will be subject to a small rise in 2011/12.

Maintenance grantsMaintenance grants of up to £2,906* a year are available for full-time UK students.

On-campus accommodationThe University has a variety of residences across its campus.

n Shared common rooms and kitchens provide space for socialising.

n All rooms have a sink: about half are en-suite with a shower and toilet, and the other half have shared facilities.

n All utility bills, internet connection and personal contents insurance are included in the accommodation fee.

n Quieter accommodation for mature students is available.

n Prices range from about £90 to about £115 a week.
