As we commence Term Three and well into the dry season our school calendar is geared for many school and class events. Our sporting calendar and Year 6 Camp feature prominently. We have a new assembly song with a boot scootin’ theme in Week 3 plus Indonesian activities and our annual Spelling Bee in Week 5. The P&C have several of their fundraising and fun activities planned, such as the forthcoming SECONDHAND BOOK FAIR this Saturday, 25 July on the school grounds and the COLOUR RUN on Friday, 3 August. All these and many more events will be published via Connect; many via the specific class post or our newsletter; which as of this term will only be published in Week 2, 6 and 10 of each term. These and other changes will be occurring as we move to become more efficient and effective with our communication and celebration of student and school events. SCHOOL NEWS

Dear Roebuck Primary School Community,

I am writing to let you know that I have accepted a position at Statewide Services Educational Need: Disability as a Teacher Consultant in Padbury, Perth. This is an area of interest for me and I am excited about the opportunity to increase my skills and knowledge and offer support to schools and classrooms in this important area of education.

I will be sad to say goodbye to the students, staff and families that I’ve had the pleasure to work with over my 10 years at Roebuck Primary School. I take with me so many happy memories and I am very proud of the growth and changes that have occurred within the school over this time. Being a part of shaping student’s lives over this time, observing them grow and move on into high school and beyond has been a privilege.

I wish to thank my colleagues, the front office staff, Mr Shem and Mrs Bowtell for the support given to me as a teacher and as part of the leadership team. My professional growth has been enhanced by the collaboration and commitment of the people I have worked alongside over the years.

Our school community is a strong and important one. One of my favourite sayings is “It takes a village to raise a child”. I like to think of our community as this village as I have experienced this first hand as a parent and educator. Anthony and I are grateful to the village that has helped raise our own children and for the friendships we have made.

I wish everyone the very best.

Goodbye from Mrs Hebble

DERBY CARNIVAL - 22 JUNE 2018

Hi I’m Lily, this is what I personally experienced on Friday 22 of June 2018 at the 2018 Derby Netball Carnival.

First of all we all woke up at 5am to get ready for our big trip! Later on when we got there we had to get changed - and to be honest it was freezing! Then at 6am we went off into the Broome Transit bus. The bus was a comfortable fabric for the seat with fluffy bits for our head to relax on; everyone was making funny jokes the whole way. The good thing was that no one was sick on the way! It was a 3 hour bus trip and we stopped at a road house to go to the toilet and have a stretch where most of us met this dog called Lucy. It was really cold at the road house so most of us went back onto the bus because it was warmer. Then we arrived at Derby, we dropped off the football team, and because of Paige G and her knowledge of Derby she showed us to Derby District High School for where we were going to play the games! We played the games and with our team captain Bonnie H we got through all of them and won 1 game. We were proud of what we achieved - even my tooth fell out during a game! Then there were the presentations, where we unfortunately came second last, but we all had a great time! Then it was time to go home. Then the air-con broke down in the bus, everyone was sweating! A few people felt sick and one blood nose but that didn’t stop our fun! We got home and most of us probably slept!

Thanks to Isabella B for her fantastic memory!

On the 22nd of June a nominated group of boys and girls went to Derby to play football against the 4 other Broome primary schools, 2 Derby primary schools and Looma. We had to get up at 5:00am to get on the bus, we were all very excited and nervous. Some kids fell asleep on the way there and some on the way back.

All the games were energetic and full of excitement, some people got injured or overheated but nothing serious happened. We came 4th out of 7 teams and St Mary’s came first.

Tom H and Joshua S got the best and fairest award and Nick B got the spirit of the team award.

Thank you to Mr M, Lynton, Kev and all the spectators and parents who came all the way to Derby and supported the students. We all had an amazing time and a great day!

Roebuck Primary School is very proud of our engagement with the community and the help provided with the projects we undertake within the school.

We wish to thank the Water Corporation and the Kimberley Community Grants Scheme for contributing funds towards our new entry sign and door wrap.

Thank you to Nyamba Buru Yawuru for assisting us in translating English to Yawuru and encouraging the use of traditional language thereby recognising the rich culture and history in this town called Broome that we all call home.

Thank you to the commitment and energy of Miss Marika and Miss Dixie for ensuring the welcome sign and door wrap reflected the ideas from the Cultural Awareness Action Team and that the ideas became a reality with the signs now in place for everyone to enjoy. No mean feat in what is an incredibly busy school!

Thank you to the students of the Cultural Awareness Action Team for your ideas and enthusiasm for the project. We hope you are very proud of the final product and having your name up in lights.

With the help of Indigenous Broome photographer and graphic designer Michael Torres, the Cultural Awareness Action Team designed contemporary Indigenous designs that reflect and represent Roebuck Primary School themes.

Students were inspired to think outside the square, incorporating the history of the school and the school themes in a modern day approach. The resulting design tells the songline of the school. Morse code symbols were designed to represent the flight of the Spoonbill, Greenshank, Ibis, Whimbrel and Gouldian Finch birds. The flight paths reference the school’s bird theme and site as a former airstrip.

The Roebuck Ripple was created as a more organic shape representative of the Broome Peninsula. The colours are taken from the Roebuck Primary School logo and teal was included to represent the beautiful waters surrounding Broome.

On the 22nd of June Miss Bev from St John Ambulance came to Ibis 6. We took a seat on the mat and waited for Miss Bev to come in. Once she came in she was teaching us about the St John Ambulance app. “First Responder” which lets them know your location when you dial 000.

Firstly Miss Bev told Ibis 6 to feel the pulse before you do C.P.R. Then we did C.P.R on the mannequins. Ibis 6 practised doing mouth to mouth using a special face sheet so we would not share germs.

Secondly Ibis 6 picked a bandage with our partners then we wrapped each other on the arms and legs with bandages and slings.

Finally Ibis 6 went into the Ambulance truck and got to look inside at all the ambulance things. When Ibis 6 got gloves the teachers took a photo of Ibis 6 near the Ambulance truck.

My favourite part was putting bandages on. I learnt that you must feel for the pulse before you do C.P.R. (Charlotte)

COLOUR FUN RUN

After last years success of our first Colour Fun Run, Roebuck P&C are excited to bring you an even bigger and better Colour Fun Run experience. This year students will have the opportunity to purchase their own supply of coloured powder to get their own back on the teachers! This major fund raising event will be held after lunch on

Friday, 3 August.

From Monday, 30 July students are invited to vote for the top 3 staff members they would like to see colour- bombed! The results of this will be read out at assembly on the morning of the Colour Fun Run and the unlucky teachers will be lined up at the Colour Fun Run for students to colour-bomb. Following this, it's game on and everyone will be showered in a rainbow of colours!

The P&C have 2 major fundraising goals for 2018. We need to raise $13,000 for new IT equipment and a further $13,000 for cooling solutions to the main undercover area. Fundraising is already underway from the AusKick Canteen, Movie night and our Major Raffle (don't forget to head in to the front office to purchase your tickets as there are some great prizes on offer).

Not only can you support the school and participants with your sponsorship – but you can join in on the fun! We would love to welcome parents and family members to attend the Colour Fun Run event day to help cheer on our students. If you would also like to volunteer to help out on the day, please contact me via email [email protected]

SECOND HAND BOOK FAIR

Roebuck Primary P&C is having a Second Hand Book Fair on Saturday, 28 July. If you have any books that you no longer need, we would love the donation. They can be dropped at the school front office, or can be collected from you. Please call Jenna 0409 374 692
