Community Partners Shout
Out!
Please look at the list of communi-
ty partners on the left side. They
invest time, money, events,
resources, services, supplies, etc.
for our scholars, staff and families.
As you visit these various busi-
nesses and organizations, thank
them for their support of Reedy
Creek Elementary.
They continue to be community
heroes in education!
I have witnessed incredibly proud moments
watching our scholars overcome obstacles
through effort, hard work and courage. We
have had a fantastic start to the new school
year thanks to the great work of our staff
and active parents. It was so nice to see so
many of you at our Curriculum Night.
For our AM car riders please, continue to
get to school early and drop your child off
prior to 8:00 am. This year I want to chal-
lenge you to take an active role at Reedy
Creek. You can shape the educational expe-
rience for your child through your active
participation and advocacy.
One way to actively participate and advocate
for your child and the school is to participate
at our PTO events and meetings and to
attend our SLT (School Leadership Team)
meetings—see dates in section below. Please
make sure you join the PTO. Our PTO is a
strong force in shaping and supporting our
school. In addition to providing supplemental
resources for our scholars, the PTO pro-
vides a variety of parent and scholar enrich-
ment opportunities. We ask you to not only
learn about what is happening with your
child’s education, but to also develop those
advocacy skills to support your child through
his/her educational career.
Also, your participation in many of our “fun”
family activities also support the building of
our school community. We hope you can
join us for our annual Fall Festival on Satur-
day, October 12th from 11 am—to 2 pm,
our first semester PTO Family Literacy Night
on Thursday, October 17th at 6:00 pm, and
our PTO sponsored Glow Party on Friday,
October 25th. Look for additional infor-
mation in your child’s agenda & weekly RED
folder.
We use connect-Ed messages to communi-
cate with our parents & community. It ena-
bles us to send a short voicemail or email
message about important school information.
The information you provide the school on
the Scholar Information Form (when enrol-
ling) & BLUE information card is what the
software accesses. Please contact the main
office staff directly if you need to update
contact information.
Please feel free to call me at 980-343-6480
or email me:
Take care,
Principal Orlando Robinson

First quarter will end on October
25th. It is our goal to have a
conference with 100% of our
parents by the end of the quar-
ter. Please be on the lookout for
notes about conference sign ups, in
your child’s agenda. This is a great
time to ask questions about your
child’s progress and our curricu-
lum. Should you need to meet with
your child’s teacher before this
time, please call or email to sched-
ule an appointment. Our schedules
do not allow time to meet with
parents in the mornings as children
are arriving or during afternoon
dismissal. Also, permission forms
for the field trip need to be turned
in by the 4th. Check your child’s
agenda daily.
—The K Grade Team
Thank you for a successful start to
the school year! We appreciate the
strong home and school connec-
tion that has been established and
look forward to building on this
relationship to best benefit our
scholars.
Our math focus this month will be
to use strategies to develop fluency
with adding and subtracting within
10. Some strategies include count-
ing on and counting back, and using
doubles and near doubles. In litera-
cy, we will build on our under-
standing of tools and work by con-
sidering how habits of character
also help us do work. We will learn
how to become effective learners
as we study habits of character
through literature and experience.
We will have parent-teacher con-
ferences this month. We will dis-
cuss your scholar’s progress for
first quarter. We look forward to
meeting with you!

Third Grade (2029)
Reading—We are finishing the first
module in our new literacy curriculum,
which focuses on overcoming learning
challenges near and far.
Math—We are working on multiplica-
tion strategies, one-step word prob-
lems and interpreting data on a graph.
Home—You can help your child at
home by practicing basic math facts and
ensuring that your child is reading for at
least 30 minutes.
Please be on the lookout to sched-
ule your child’s parent teacher
conference in October.
—The 3rd Grade Team
We are off to a very promising start to
the 2019-2020 school year! We are building a growth mindset, engaging in grade-level activities, and anticipating a productive 2nd grade experience.
Please continue to read with your child daily and practice math concepts using
CMS’ digital platforms mentioned in
the Homework Extensions notice during Curriculum Night. It is ex-
tremely important that your child share their strategies and thinking with you while you are reviewing their
work. Our scholars are required to express their strategies in writing for most assessments. Practice basic facts
to 20 and solving double-digit addition and subtraction story problems. You should also check the Friday Folder and use the problems that were not
assigned during class as additional practice of new and ongoing math skills. Don’t forget to check and sign
your child’s agenda each day! Thank you for your continued support
of our “Superhero Scholars!” Please
keep a lookout for parent-teacher conference invitations.
—The 2nd Grade Team
Attendance Counts! The attendance rate is important
because scholars are more likely
to succeed in academics when
they attend school consistently.
It’s difficult for the teacher and the
class to build their skills and pro-
gress if scholars are frequently
absent. Please partner with us to
increase school attendance.
If your child will be absent from
school, please send an e-mail to
attend-
Please be sure to include the fol-lowing information:
Your child's name and grade/
teacher
Parent name
The reason for absence
A callback phone number
You can also call the school at 980
-343-6480.
Thanks for your support!

The Technology Services team has worked diligently to streamline scholar access to digital tools.
Scholar logins have been updated to a more consistent format using the scholar’s state ID and unique
password. Scholars will be able to access more of the digital tools available in the NCEdCloud portal. This change is a big step in making digital learning and access to digital tools, easier for scholars from
any computer with Internet. Please review the table below for updated login information.

In Social Studies, the students will
work on a project about the three
regions of North Carolina.
In Reading, we will continue reading
a variety of nonfiction texts. They will
dive into articles and books about
healthy living. Students will explore
pictures and data about our cultural
beliefs on living a healthy life and
make connections to how they are
interdependent.
In Math, our scholars are learning to
represent an unknown number in an
equation by using a symbol or a let-
ter. They will also solve word prob-
lems with multiplicative comparison
by using bar models and multiplicative
sentences. A great site were your
child can practice these skills is http://
www.mathplayground.com/ think-
ingblocks.html. On the site, the stu-
dents are able to manipulate model-
ing tools as they solve various types
of word problems. Also, they will
apply the area and perimeter formu-
las for rectangles in real world and
mathematical problems. For example,
find the width of a rectangular room
given the area of the flooring and the
length, by viewing the area formula as
a multiplication equation with an
unknown factor.
In Science, our scholars had lots of
fun during our hands-on rock and
mineral unit. Our current exciting
unit is on fossils. During the unit,
students will understand the use of
fossils and changes in the surface of
the earth as evidence of the history
of the Earth and its changing life
forms.

Reading—
How do relationships affect a
healthy life? This will be our focus
question as we move from learning
about body systems to a discussion
and study of physical and social rela-
tionships and identifying how those
relationships affect a character’s
“quality of life”. Our anchor text
will be Rules by Cynthia
Lord. Scholars will be paying close
attention to the characters in the
text to answer our focus question as
we read. Scholars will be asked to
write an informative piece at the end
of our unit using the information we
learned to write a focused and orga-
nized essay. Please help your scholar
at home by providing them a quiet
environment where they are able to
build their reading stamina by read-
ing at least 20 uninterrupted minutes
daily.
In Math this month, we start with
multiplying and dividing whole
numbers. Scholars will learn new
strategies to find a product or
quotient. Once we become expert
scholars at multiplying and divid-
ing, we will review place value, as
well as learn decimal place val-
ue. This will help prepare us for adding and subtracting decimals.
In Science, we learn about the
different types of energy trans-
fer. Scholars will be able to identi-
fy radiation, conduction, and con-
vection, as well as the difference
between conductors and insula-
tors. We then start our unit on
Forces and Motion.

Fifth Grade (2027)
Parents as we move into October, it is very important that you ensure your schol-ar is at school and ready to learn by 8:00 am each day. Thank you for collaborating
with us to increase daily attendance. Below are some helpful tips to ensure your scholar comes to school on time every day.
· Set a regular bed time and morning routine
· Make sure your scholar is in school unless they are sick · Develop a backup plan for getting your scholar to school if something comes up
· Avoid extended trips when school is in session
October is Anti-Bully and Drug free month. As a school, we will have our bully prevention week from October 7th through October 11th. Our goal is to
work together to prevent bullying by bringing awareness to its occurrence. Reminders Ø Anti-Bully week – October 7th- October 11th
Ø Red Ribbon Week (“ Send a message. Stay Drug Free”) – October 21st- 25th Grades K-2 Ms. Clinton- [email protected] Grades 3-5 Ms. Davis-Johnson-
